CENF geological survey findings
• Completed borings up till 30 April 2013: C11-C14 (near detector area)
Stratigraphy C11 and C12• 0.2m-1.2m topsoil and backfill • 1.2m to 8.0m Wurmian Moraine (clays, silts)
• Consolidated• Intra-moraine units (marly, sandy, gravely), maximum thickness of 2.2m
• Partially saturated → excavation in wet conditions• Between 6.0m and 13.0m gravels
• Compacted• Aquifer → pumping tests will be carried out to determine the properties of the aquifer
• From13.0m up to 20m Rissien Moraine
Stratigraphy C13• Entire borehole consists of Moraine, except for an intra-moraine marly and gravely unit at 5.0 – 7.2m depth
• Marly unit partially saturated → excavation in wet conditions• Aquifer in gravels
Stratigraphy C14• Entire borehole consists of Moraine, except for an intra-moraine marly and gravely unit at 5.0 – 7.2m depth
• Partially saturated → excavation in wet conditions• No well defined aquifer, but some water inflow has been noted
Initial conclusions• Geology is very heterogeneous • Groundwater levels are variable
