STEM Awards

Good News: 2009 showed the largest increase since 2003 – with 17%

Bad News: STEM awards would need to increase 100% to reach the 2015 target.

New Teacher Certifications

In FY 2009, initial teacher certifications from all sources dropped for the first time since FY 2000.

Certification of new math and science teachers dropped 5%

Summary of Findings Hispanics had the largest increases, but still

lag with only 4.4% participation rate

African American Females have the highest participation rate (7.8%) of any group

Overall Female participation rate outpaces males 6.5% to 5.0%

STEM degrees had largest increase yet, but still need to double to reach target

Certifications of new math and science teachers dropped 5%
