I wish all Club & Committee members and their families a prosperous, healthy & safe 2019. I’m
sure you’ve all had a good rest and now ready to get those project bikes restored & running this
year. There’s no better time like now to commit & start working on those projects which have
been pushed aside for so long.
As you all know the year starts off with the Pre-DJ Run in early February then a month later it’s the
DJ Rally. So, don’t leave it to the last minute to get those DJ bikes tuned & ready for these events.
There is also the “Zwartkops Day of the Champion” event happening in February where we require
your support in showing off your DJ bike to the public.
Our dedicated committee is here to serve you, the members, and I appeal to everybody to come
forward with fresh ideas & support in making the VMC a much stronger club in 2019.

PAST EVENTS
RIDE IN MEMORY

This in one of the VMC traditional rides, one of the VMC anchor events. The format was the same
as it has been for many years. Johannesburg members gathered at the Founders Hill Engen Garage
to leave for Bapsfontein at 08:00am, where we met riders from the East Rand and Pretoria. We
left Bapsfontein Flight Inn (BP) garage at 9am and rode to Cullinan for breakfast. It was a
wonderful way to end the year and remember old friends.
This year, numbers were down slightly. About 6 members met at Founders Hill. Our numbers were
however boosted, first when the Pretoria contingent arrived, led by Andy Robertson on an almost
legal Velocette Special, then by the East Rand contingent with Pierre Cronje and Bill Lance bringing
up the rear on true vintage bikes.
Altogether about 20 bikes made their way to the Lemon Tree in Cullinan for an enjoyable
breakfast and time out.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Pre-DJ
This is a regular annual event ably run by CMC. It is a good opportunity to blow the cobwebs out of
your DJ bike and give it a test run before the DJ. Although entries will have closed by the time you
read this, if you have not already entered, speak to Pierre Cronje on 072-513-9432. He may be
able to squeeze you in. The distance is ideal for a DJ bike and the day ends of with a braai at the
CMC club house.

This event needs no introduction. This year, bikes leave Hillcrest on 15
th March, arrive in
Germiston on 16th
March and prize giving at the Atholl Oaklands on 17th
March.

BMA ANNUAL GATHERING IN KNYSNA
The 37th annual gathering for owners of British and other classic motorcycles is to be held in
Knysna over the weekend of 08-10 February 2019. The event is an informal gathering, totally
voluntary, non-competitive and you take part at your own risk.
The sequence of events/activities will be roughly as follows :
Friday 08 Feb 2019 – Arrive in Knysna, settle in & entertain yourself (There is a popular
pub/restaurant within walking distance - 300m).
Sat 09 Feb 2019 – 08:00 Breakfast run to Buffalo Bay
12:00 Display of Bikes & Lunch at Knysna Waterfront
19:00 Bring & Braai at Abalone Lodges. (Tables, chairs, fires & grids
will be provided).
Sun 10 Feb 2019 – Return home
Venue : Abalone Lodges, Heron’s Way, Knysna. You are required to make your own
reservations and payment for accommodation at Abalone Lodges before 31 December 2018.
Please make sure to tell them that you are part of the motorcycle contingent otherwise you will
be told that the resort is fully booked. Sharing accommodation will further reduce costs.

DAY OF THE CHAMPION
KALK BAY VETERAN RUN
This event is hosted by the Crankhandle club and takes place on 2/3 February 2019.
26 Entries have been received ranging from (oldest) a 1870 Penny Farthing bicycle to (newest) a
1917 Indian Powerplus motorcycle. Amongst the entrants are VMC members Peter Posniak,
driving a 1912 Buick 28, Bevan Beckmann riding a 1914 Douglas and Steven Helm riding a 1914
New Hudson.

FUEL TANK SEALING

Sometime during the life of any motorcycle, the fuel tank starts to rust on the inside. This creates
all sorts of issues from blocked fuel taps to dirty jets in the carburetor. Excessive rusting then leads
to holes in the fuel tank, etc.
One way of eliminating this problem is to line the fuel tank with some or other coating.
If there is only surface rust, then this can be removed by filling the tank with white vinegar and
letting it stand for at least a few days. Once clean you need to then neutralise the cleaned surface
by using a solution of baking soda.
For tanks with a lot of loose rust, you can add round pellets from a BB gun, to the vinegar solution
and shake it around. Alternatively marble or granite chips, or shatter proof glass chips can be used.
If the tank is going to be re-sprayed then you can use dilute (15% concentration) hydrochloric acid
as this process works a lot quicker but once again it’s important to neutralise using baking soda.
Note that hydrochloric acid is sold in pool shops at 30% concentration, so you need to add one
part water to one part acid to get to 15% concentration.
Once the tank is clean on the inside, it needs to be washed out thoroughly with soapy water and
then dried using compressed air or a heat gun.
I prefer to use a product by 3M called Scotch-clad 776 which is a solvent based adhesive coating
that stays flexible over a wide temperature range & is used in the aircraft industry. This syrup like
liquid is poured into the tank, swirled around for a few minutes then allow to drain. It takes 20
minutes to set & 24 hours to dry.
What’s nice about this product is that if you happen to dent your tank the coating is not affected
in anyway whereas using an epoxy coating it could easily crack.

BORRO “BEPPE” CASTELLANI’s 1955 MATCHLESS G45

One of the oldest of British motorcycle manufacturers, Matchless pursued a vigorous competition
policy in its early years, the founder's son, Charlie Collier, winning the inaugural Isle of Man TT
(single-cylinder) race of 1907 and repeating the feat in 1910, brother Harry having brought home
the honors in 1909. However, by the 1930s Matchless had ceased to be thought of as a racing
brand and after WW2 the firm, by now reconstituted as Associated Motor Cycles having acquired
AJS, chose the latter's badge for its competition machines. In this context the arrival of a new
Matchless racing motorcycle in 1951 caused something of a stir.
The prototype of what would become the G45 first appeared at the 1951 Manx Grand Prix with
Robin Sherry aboard, eventually finishing 4th after a promising debut. In fact, the machine was not
an entirely new design but essentially a hybrid comprised of AJS 7R-based cycle parts into which
was installed a tuned Matchless G9 roadster engine. The engine's bottom-end remained more-or-
less stock G9 and retained AMC's unique center-bearing crankshaft, but above the crankcase there
was a new aluminum-alloy cylinder barrel and cylinder head, the latter sporting distinctively
finned exhaust rocker boxes. Fuel was fed by a single Amal TT carburetor and exhausted via a pair
of short megaphones.
In 1952, the prototype G45 garnered much valuable publicity and not a little controversy when

Derek Farrant - later an AJS works rider on both Porcupine and 7R3 - won the Senior Manx GP
after leading from start to finish. Strictly speaking, a works prototype had no business running in
an event for amateurs riding over-the-counter machines, but AMC quickly announced that a
production G45 would be available for 1953. Although still based on that of the G9, the production
version's engine incorporated a different camshaft, which opened the valves via roller followers,
and breathed via a pair of Amal GP carburetors mounted either side of a central float chamber.
Claimed power output was 48bhp at 7,200rpm, increasing on later models to 54bhp at 7,400 revs.
Apart from revised valve gear and the eventual adoption of a forged crankshaft, the G45 changed
little over the course of its life and what developments there were did not keep pace with the
opposition. At the end of the 1954 season, AMC announced a cutback in its racing program, which
meant the end for the Porcupine and the 7R3, though the G45 and 7R continued to be developed
and raced. Production of the G45 ceased in 1957 after around 80 machines had been built, of
which approximately half are believed to survive worldwide today. Before then, the works team's
G45 best result at international level had been Rod Coleman's 2nd place in the 1954 Ulster Grand
Prix.
This rare Matchless G45 was commissioned in 1955 and went immediately to South Africa. It is
believed to be the bike that was extensively raced by one Borro 'Beppe' Castellani, a seven-time
South African road racing champion (race # 80), over the winter of 1957 into 1958. Beppe usually
'marked' his bikes and his G45 was no exception for it carries a South African coin – South African
currency would then have been issued by the British government – 'sweated' in the crankcase just
below the barrel. Archive material is hard to find but there is one image of Beppe off the deck on
his G45. Jim Redman, six times world motorcycle champion mentions Beppe in his autobiography,
'For the time being, the most important thing for me was to win the 1957 500cc Championship in
South Africa but, unfortunately, I was beaten by Beppe Castellani, the current South African
Champion, untouchable at the time. Little more is known of its story until very recently – although
it is believed to have been raced further in historic or classic races – when it arrived in the USA,
pretty much in original specification, and complete, and restoration was undertaken. And it was
clearly done very well.
The engine has two Amal 930 Concentric carburetors for easy starting and smooth running; a
Lucas competition magneto, SS cam, and an on/off tap and an oil filter in the return line. Also an
AMC 4-speed gearbox with Newby dry clutch and chain primary drive. Inside are chrome hardened
and machined rocker shafts. The Norton Featherbed-style frame has been improved which
together with a front fork stabilizer and Akront alloy rims, with stainless spokes, help handling and
stability. An aluminum, partitioned, Manx-style fuel tank tops off the bike.)

REFLECTIONS ON THE FAIREST CAPE TOUR

It was great to be invited down for the rally and National Savva event and we flew down dreaming
of wine, mountains and of course motorcycling. First night was a get together bring and braai with
plenty familiar faces and some new ones which we always look forward to.
Hanani a friend and female first-time rider rode a modern Triumph in the touring class, this being
her first regularity meant she followed us and by day two was happily using her own rally sheets,
successfully getting the confidence to manage by herself in the future.
I ride a lovely V7 Moto Guzzi a little older than my V7 Special but it felt lighter and sweeter and I
may have to find a way to loosen Andy’s grip on her in time!
Bevan used to 1947 American iron was really impressed by Mark’s A10 BSA which ran like a clock
the entire event.
Day one was a scorcher, everyone was more interested in shade than clues, but I noticed how the
event encouraged wine shoppers in the touring class and I'm sure will become a popular pastime
in the future. The swimming pools at Goudini were well appreciated that afternoon. In the evening

a Cheese and Wine proved I think to be the hit of the event and well I hope it wasn't just me who
couldn't stop tasting.
Day two was definitely cooler and more enjoyed although I saw a good number of rallyists going
off track outbound and on the return journey not checking time on the turns. The wine fields are
probably the best scenery for riding through particularly early morning and late afternoons! The
section on the now famous R62 was stunning!
Prize-giving was a grand affair, I felt like black tie should be mandatory, great food and live music
by fellow riders. The bikes were beaten by a car team for the overall prize which actually was a
nice end to the run. Well done the Lyons-Lewis family!
Returning to Stellenbosch on day 3 was for us an awesome third day on the bikes and made me
feel the rallies aren't long enough perhaps. I think that also riding to and from a rally are what I
need in my life, I'm still not getting enough.
Thank you to the organisers and everyone involved as it’s taken me three attempts to finish a
Fairest Cape but I have finally done it! Previously I was beaten by rain and malaria but it’s been all
worth it and I'm sure to be back! Thank you to Andy Stead and Mark Shaw for all your assistance in
making it possible.
CLUB NIGHT – 26th

The club meeting was chaired by Ralph Pitchford with 42 members present and 5 apologies
received.
Ian Holmes provided feedback on the Armistice Run which was held on Sunday the 11th
November
2018 to celebrate 100 years since the Second World War. The parade was led by pre-1918 cars
from the VMC Clubhouse to the War Museum. During the service, a 2 minute silence was
observed which was initially initiated by Percy Fitzpatrick. The first minute was for the soldiers and
the second minute was for the families that suffered during this war.
The “motorcyclist of the month” was awarded in his absence to Stuart Ferguson, who is a country
member for winning the Fairest Cape Rally on his motorcycle.

Roley Tilman spoke about the “Ride in Memory” event which was held on the 9th
December 2018
to Cullinan for breakfast.
Steve Helm spoke about the Swartbrand Rally which was held on the 5th
/ 6th
January 2019 with an
overnight stay at the Deneysville Bike Museum.
Gavin Walton spoke about the “Day of the Champions” event to be held on the 3rd
February 2019
at Swartkops Raceway in Pretoria to celebrate all racing legends. VMC members are requested to
bring along their DJ bikes for the vintage display and may have an opportunity to ride around the
racetrack.
The “bike show and talk” was presented by George Temple on his 1971 Norton 750cc Commando.

George and Colleen Shield bid farewell to the club as they are relocating to Worcester in the Cape.
George related to his racing career which he did on a MOV-Velocette GT 2 stroke. His first race
was at the Grand Central raceway in 1961 where he was placed 3rd
in the 250cc class. The first bike
George owned was a 1948 Velocette MAC 350cc which he purchased for 85 Pounds and built by
Dennis Loxton. Jannie Stander assisted George in preparing his race bikes of which one was a 1956

Manx Norton 500cc. George raced competitively from 1961 till 12 December 1964. The VMC Club
wishes George and Colleen all the best for their relocation.

LOGGERS

With the DJ coming up, perhaps a few notes on loggers are appropriate.
At the end of many rallies, some issues are experienced with loggers, often related to battery
issues, but sometimes just loggers failing to log. Suspect loggers are then re-charged and tested
and then appear to be fine. We are never sure whether failure to log is a real fault or whether the
logger was accidently switched off. Unaccountable issues seem on average to affect 2% of loggers
or 1 in 50 loggers per rally day. If you wish to be competitive, it is recommended that you carry a
spare logger. You should be able hire one from the organisers.
Make sure the battery is charged. If the green light goes off, don’t just assume that the battery is
charged. You may have lost power to the connection. Disconnect, and then re-connect. The green
light should come on for a few minutes again, confirming that charging power is still available.
After fully charging, test the battery life by switching the logger on and allowing it to discharge.
When the red light comes on (low battery) you will have about an hour left. If you get anything
less than 10 hours, consider using a power booster or replacing the battery. (If anyone finds a
supplier for the HOLUX batteries at a reasonable price, please let me know).
Ensure that the logger cannot be accidently switched off during the event. Use masking tape or
similar over the switch to prevent this. Carry the logger in a small plastic container or bag to
protect it from water.
Carry the logger where it will receive a good signal. If your reflective jacket has a breast pocket,
this would be a good place to carry it. Don’t put it in your trouser pocket under your wallet or
mobile phone.

The Aussie is bent over holding his face, which is red from an apparent slap.
The old woman is thinking: 'That Aussie must have tried to kiss that girl and got slapped.'
The Aussie is thinking: 'Damn it, that Afrikaner Boertjie must have tried to kiss the beautiful girl.
She thought it was me and slapped me instead.'
The beautiful girl is thinking: 'That Aussie must have moved to kiss me, but kissed the old lady
instead and got slapped.'
The Afrikaner Boertjie is thinking: 'If this train goes through another tunnel, I could make another
kissing sound and moer that Aussie again!'
