individuālās īpatnības konkrētā valstī, t.i., lokālā savdabība.
6
Bieži gan starptautiskos, gan Latvijā veiktos izglītības pētījumos
mācību process tiek skatīts no viena skatupunkta (vai nu skolotāja, vai skolēna
viedokļa), mācīšanās tiek skatīta atrauti no mācīšanas, skolēna akadēmiskie
parādības no dažādiem rakursiem, izvērtējot kontekstuālos faktorus. Šajā
pētījumā matemātikas izglītība tiek skatīta no matemātiķiem un matemātikas
skolotājiem ārējas perspektīvas, tādējādi piedāvājot cita veida, neitrālāku un,
iespējams, objektīvāku skatījumu uz matemātikas izglītības procesu (Kanuha,
2000; Unluer, 2012).
Pētījumā problēmas skatījums no dažādiem rakursiem attiecas ne tikai
(Brown, Rose, 1995; Fabio, Saklofske, 2014; Parker, 1966; Thijs, Koomen, van
matemātiku/matemātiķiem: Martino, Zan, 2010; Wilkins, Ma, 2002;
matemātiskā trauksmainība: Bai, Wang, Pan, Frey, 2009; Luo, Wang, Luo,
2009; matemātiskā pašefektivitāte: Chen, Zimmerman, 2007; Cramer, Neal,
Brodsky, 2009; Margolis, McCabe, 2006; matemātiskā es-koncepcija: Kim,
2005; Lee, 2009; skolēnu matemātikas/matemātiķu uztvere: Burton, 2009;
Grevholm, 2010; Kaldo, 2010; Sumpter, 2010).
un to ietekmējošiem faktoriem.
klasei, bet no 2008. līdz 2011. gadam 7. – 9. klasei).
diezgan radikāli izmaina matemātikas apguves procesu, saistot to ar ikdienas
Viens no promocijas
starptautiskās skolēnu novērtēšanas programmas (Organisation for Economic
Cooperation and Development Programme for International Student
Assessment OECD/PISA) rezultātiem, kuri ir iegūti, analizējot datus no 2010.
līdz 2013. gadam 65 pasaules valstīs, 15 gadus vecu Latvijas skolēnu
kompetence matemātikā ir uzlabojusies. Latvijas skolēnu vidējie sasniegumi
statistiski būtiski neatšķiras ne no OECD valstu vidējā rādītāja, ne no Francijas,
dabaszinātņu izglītības attīstības tendenču starptautiskā pētījuma (Trends in
International Mathematics and Science Study, TIMSS, 2007) ietvaros, tika
atklāts, ka Latvijā 4. klašu skolēnu attieksme pret matemātiku ir
pasliktinājusies – augstu attieksmju grupā 2007. gadā bija par 6% skolēnu
mazāk nekā 2003. gadā. Zemu attieksmju grupa toties ir palielinājusies par 7%
(Geske, Mihno, 2008).
salīdzinot pēc sociāli demogrāfiskajiem indikatoriem (Ma, Kishor, 1997;
Mubeen, Saeed, Arif, 2013).
izglītības jomā var minēt šādas doktora disertācijas: Cunska, A. (2013). IKT
lietojuma iespējas matemātikas mācīšanā skolā; Kangro, I. (2010). Studentu
matemātiskās domāšanas attīstība profesionālās kompetences veidošanās
procesā; Lāce, G. (2010). Latvijas pamatskolas matemātikas skolotāju
kompetence matemātikas didaktikā; Helmane, I. (2006).
attieksmi pret to.
To starpā var minēt Hannulas (2004) disertāciju „Afektīvie
rādītājiem;
Konstruktīvisma pieeja, ja to lieto skolotāji
„es” rādītājiem, ja to izmanto skolotāji vecumā no 36 līdz 45 gadiem ar
bakalaura līmeņa izglītību.
14
(Brooks, Brooks, 1993; Dewey, 1988; Dionne, 1984; Dougiamas, 1998; Piaget,
1977; Vygotsky, 1978) un tradicionālās mācīšanas idejām (Beck, 2009;
Clements, Batista, 1990; Kim, 2005; Stofflett, 1998).
apguvi tiek skaidrota, izmantojot vienu no izplatītākajām motivācijas teorijām,
proti, gaidu-vērtību teoriju (angl. expectancy-value theory) (Atkinson, 1957;
Eccles u.c., 1989; Wigfield, 1994; Wigfield, Eccles, 1992), kā arī sociālās
salīdzināšanas teoriju (Craven, Marsh, Print, 2000; Marsh, 2004; Marsh, Hau,
2004; Rost, Sparfeld, Dickhouser, Schelling, 2005; Skaalvik, Skaalvik, 2002).
Es-koncepcija konkrētajā pētījumā tiek skatīta matemātikas kontekstā (Bong,
Skaalvik, 2003; Marsh,1992; Schunk, Pajares, 2005) saistībā ar skolēnu sociāli
demogrāfiskajiem rādītājiem (Hill, Lynch, 1983; Ma, Kishor, 1997; Nagy u.c.,
2008; Young, 1998) un skolotāja izvēlēto mācīšanas pieeju (Hanze, Berger,
2007; Kim, 2005; Mayers, 1994).
matemātiskā pašefektivitāte (Hoffman, Schraw, 2009; Pajares, Miller, 1994;
demogrāfiskajiem rādītājiem (Pajares, Miller, 1994; Pintrich, De Groot, 1990;
15
Seegers, Boekaerts, 1996) un skolotāja izmantoto mācīšanas pieeju (Dorman,
2001; Friedel u.c., 2007; Gentry, Owen, 2004; Middleton, Migley, 1997).
Tika analizēts matemātiskās trauksmainības jēdziens (Kazelskis, 1998;
Ma, Xu, 2004; Norwood, 1994; Satake, Amato, 1995). Tika skatīti
matemātiskās trauksmainības pētījumi saistībā ar skolēnu sociāli
demogrāfiskajiem rādītājiem (Lee, 2009; Luo, Wang Luo, 2009; Meece,
Wigfield, Eccles, 1990) un skolotāju izmantoto mācīšanas pieeju (Gresham,
2007; Newstead, 1998; Rule, Harell, 2006; Vinson, 2001).
Attieksmes jēdziens tika skatīts gan vispārējā kontekstā (Aiken, 2002;
(Kislenko, Grevholm, Lepik, 2009; Philippou, Christou, 1998). Uztveres
jēdziens ir skatīts atribūcijas teorijas ietvaros (Fiske, Taylor, 1991; Heider,
1958; Glover, Ronning, Brunning, 1990), saistībā ar matemātiku un
matemātiķiem (Ernest, 1996; Hannula, 2002; Grevholm, 2010; Picker, Berry,
uztver matemātiku, matemātiķus un mācīšanas pieeju (Dogan-Dunlop, 2004;
Fraser, Tobin, 1998; Thompson, 1992).
Kvalitatīvo datu apstrādē tika izmantota zīmējumu analīze (Burton, 2009;
Rule, Harrell, 2006; Sumpter, 2010), fenomenoloģiskā analīze (Smith,
Osborn, 2008), veikta induktīvā kvalitatīvā kontentanalīze un kategoriju
biežuma aprēķināšana, metaforu analīze (Löfström, Poom-Valickis,
Hannula, 2011).
Pētījuma dalībnieki
Kopējais empīriskā pētījuma dalībnieku skaits – 3478;
četri no šiem skolotājiem piedalījās fenomenoloģiskajās intervijās;
respondentu skaita;
Fenomenoloģiskajās intervijās piedalījās pieci 9. klases skolēni.

izstrāde, pilotēšana, skolēnu un skolotāju interviju novadīšana.
17
3) pētījuma posms (2013. – 2014.) – matemātikas skolotāju un skolēnu
interviju analīze un interpretācija, zinātniskās literatūras analīze, skolotāju
un skolēnu datu salīdzināšana. Pētījuma rezultātu apkopošana, teorijas
papildināšana. Promocijas darba pilnveide un noformēšana.
Matemātikas mācību process ir analizēts integrētā veidā, skatot to gan no
politiķiem būtu jāņem vērā pētījuma laikā gūtās atziņas par to, ka nepastāv
Ņemot vērā to, ka ar izglītību
saistītos procesus būtu jāskata komplekso adaptīvo sistēmu principu ietvaros,
gan organizējot skolotāju izglītības procesu, gan mācību procesu skolā šie
18

ietekmē to, kā indivīds uztver jaunu informāciju to pieņemot vai noraidot
(Borg, 2001; Pajares, 1992).
uzskati par to, kas ir matemātika;
uzskati par to, kā noris matemātikas mācīšana un mācīšanās;
(Buzeika, 1996; Haney, McArthur, 2002; Hashweh, 1996; Levitt, 2002;
McClain, 2002; Roehrig, Kruse, 2005; Thompson, 1992).
Miller, 1994; Stevens, Olivarez, Hamman, 2006). Skolēni ar augstāku
matemātisko pašefektivitāti spēj ilgāk strādāt pie sarežģītiem matemātiskiem
uzdevumiem un pieļauj mazāk kļūdu rēķināšanā (Collins, 1982; Hoffman,
Schraw, 2009).
pieeju (Afangideh, 2001; Eccles u.c., 1989; Hanze, Berger, 2007; Kazemi,
Ghoraishi, 2012; Kim, 2005; Newstead, 1998; Papanastasiou, 2008; Simonson,
Maushak, 2001).
matemātiskā „es” rādītāji (Frost, Hyde, Fennema, 1994; Luo, Wang, Luo, 2009;
Ma, Kishor, 1997; Pajares, Miller, 1994; Pintrich, De Groot, 1990; Seegers,
Boekarts, 1996; Wilkins, Ma, 2002). Visi promocijas darbā pētītie rādītāji ir
kompleksi un multideterminēti, tāpēc arī to pētīšanai jābūt kompleksai,
aplūkojot tos no dažādiem viedokļiem un izmantojot dažādas pētīšanas
metodes.

Klāsteris 1 (51% no visiem skolēniem, ) – attīstīti
Klāsteris 2 (49% no visiem skolēniem, ) – neattīstīti
Klāsteris 1 ( (39,2% no visiem skolotājiem)) – skolotāji, kuri
Klāsteris 2 ( (36,4% no visiem skolotājiem)) – skolotāji, kuri
Klāsteris 3 ( (24,4% no visiem skolotājiem)) – skolotāji, kuri
skolā, jo man patīk rēķināt”.
manuprāt, man padodas”. 788 skolēnu atbildes (37%) raksturo emocionāli
piederumus (37%): pildspalvas, zīmuļus, lineālus, dzēšgumijas; 5) tāfeli (34%);
6) solus, galdus (27%); 8) cilvēkus (15%). Daudzos zīmējumos bija attēlotas
vairākas lietas no šī saraksta.
Lielais hibrīdmetaforu skaits liecina par to, ka skolotāji apzinās sava darba
daudzšķautņainību un atzīst, ka veiksmīga mācību procesa organizēšana no
skolotāja prasa dažādas prasmes un zināšanas. Uz sevi vērsto metaforu
dominance varētu norādīt uz to, ka skolotāji nenodala savu skolotāja lomu no
anonimitāti un brīvību, to neuztverot pietiekami nopietni.
36
tradicionālo, gan konstruktīvisma mācīšanas pieeju; 2) ja skolotājs ar
bakalaura līmeņa izglītību izmanto tradicionālo pieeju; 3) ja skolotājs
vecumā no 36 – 45 gadiem izmanto tradicionālo mācīšanas pieeju.
procesā, atkarībā no noteiktiem kontekstuāliem faktoriem, kopumā pozitīvi
ietekmē skolēnu matemātiskā „es” attīstību, kas nozīmē, ka izvirzītās
hipotēzes konkrētās pētījuma izlases ietvaros tika pierādītas.

1. General description of the thesis
In the second decade of the 21st century, education in Latvia as well as
in the world starts orienting towards principles of sustainable development. It is
a reorientation towards other values, choosing quality instead of quantity,
accepting and respecting diversity of people and their views, evaluating not
only results, but also the process during which these results have been
achieved. Education is the sphere that is aimed at stimulating an individual’s
understanding of values and providing necessary knowledge and competencies.
Education for sustainable development does not concentrate on providing
knowledge, but rather on the search for possible solutions to everyday life
situations which should definitely be reflected in curricula and teaching
approaches. As education is changing, so is a teacher’s and a student’s role in it
(UNECE, 2011).
Processes connected with education in scientific literature are
characterised as complex, changing, non-linear, multidimensional, which is
why education cannot be viewed narrowly, merely within a context of school,
apart from other processes in society because they are interconnected (Kuhn,
2008; Morrison, 2008). According to this view on education, learning is a
process of development of an individual, a social group and a society, their
mutual cooperation and constructive action, emphasising mutual
interconnection and a view on an individual’s mind as a complex adaptive
system (Jess, Atencio & Thorburn, 2008; Morrison, 2008). Structural elements
of the complex adaptive system intercorrelate in self-organised manner and the
overall state of the system cannot be determined by the sum of its elements
(Norman, 2011). These systems are based on the following principles: 1)
system behaviour is unpredictable at the detail level, 2) small changes can
result in major changes in system behaviour, 3) it is difficult to define the
borders of the system (Holland, 1996; Norman, 2011; Waldrop, 1992).
The above mentioned principles should be taken into consideration
implementing new approaches in education. Introduction of new approaches in
education in Latvia as well as other countries around the world is often
presented and perceived as contradicting with the previously accepted norms,
condemning them. New ideas are often introduced without any critical
evolution and deeper research in the respective context. The historical
development of education systems varies from country to country; there are
differences in views and perceptions about teaching/learning process, in
philosophical and cultural contexts and needs, which is why the same education
approach is not likely to succeed in all countries and societies. When adopting
new standards, due consideration should be taken for the history of teaching,
traditions and individual peculiarities of the ethnos. Therefore it is necessary to
conduct educational researches in Latvia in order to explore the specific
38
qualitative and quantitative expressions of the education tendencies in Latvian
education system.
In international as well as Latvian educational researches,
teaching/learning process is examined only from one perspective – teacher’s or
student’s perspective; learning process is studied apart from teaching; a
student’s academic achievements are not viewed in the context of affective
factors etc. In order to find out the real situation, according to the principles of
complex adaptive systems, the phenomenon should be examined from different
views, taking into consideration contextual factors. In this thesis, mathematics
education is viewed from a perspective external to mathematicians and
mathematics teachers, thus offering another, more neutral and possibly more
objective view on mathematics education process (Kanuha, 2000; Unluer,
2012), and an unconventional view on mathematics and mathematicians from a
student’s perspective is used. The thesis is not worked out in mathematics
science or mathematics methodology sub-branch but in mathematics education
(in Latvian nomenclature the most suitable is school pedagogy sub-branch). In
the centre of this research is not mathematics as a science and school subject
but intercorrelation between teachers’ teaching approaches and students’ self in
the context of mathematics education.
In the current research, viewing problems from different perspectives
refers not only to research sample and variables, but also to research methods.
Applying both qualitative and quantitative research methods and integrating
them, using data collection tools which allow to obtain information not only by
asking definite questions, but also in a mediated way – by analysing an
individual’s visual reflections of reality or metaphorical reflections on feelings,
more complete and more precise results with higher research rigour can be
obtained.
Qualitative and quantitative research methods for direct determining of
teachers’ actions were not used in the thesis because the usage of these methods
in a rather extensive sample is connected with some methodological
difficulties. Teachers’ real actions were studied with the help of teachers’
questionnaire which included teachers’ reports on the frequency of the definite
teaching approaches usage in their lessons. The author also used
phenomenological and verbal projective methods which allowed teachers to
provide an expanded report on their action in the classroom and other processes
connected with it. Self-reports on one’s real action or processes are traditionally
used in educational and social sciences research when it is not possible or
expediently to use direct access methods as, for example, observation (Brown,
Rose, 1995; Fabio, Saklofske, 2014; Parker, 1966; Thijs, Koomen, van der Leij,
2006).
To outline content aspect of the research, it should be pointed out that
mathematics all over the world is recognised as an important school subject and
as a significant science field in a broader social context. Mathematical concepts
39
and operations are important for many school subjects, professions and spheres
of life. Mathematics has always had a significant role in education process in
the world and in Latvia; it has been considered a difficult school subject which
is not likely to cause positive emotions in all students. Several broad researches
have been conducted in the world recently concerning concepts connected with
mathematics and mathematics education which are studied in this thesis (a
student’s attitude towards mathematics/mathematicians: Martino, Zan, 2010;
Orhun, 2007; Wilkins, Ma, 2002; mathematical anxiety: Bai, Wang, Pan, Frey,
2009; Luo, Wang, Luo, 2009; mathematical self-efficacy: Chen, Zimmerman,
2007; Cramer, Neal, Brodsky, 2009; Margolis, McCabe, 2006; mathematical
self-conception: Kim, 2005; Lee, 2009; a student’s conception of
mathematics/mathematicians: Burton, 2009; Grevholm, 2010; Kaldo, 2010;
Sumpter, 2010). Pedagogy, psychology and mathematics education intersect in
the above mentioned concepts which is why they should not be studied merely
from the perspective of mathematics education, but from different perspectives
to achieve a more complete and multi-disciplinary understanding about the
studied phenomenon. The research problem in this thesis was analysed from the
perspective of pedagogy, philosophy and psychology in such way widening the
borders of the system.
Teaching mathematics is being discussed in Europe now. Since 2007,
most of European countries have looked through mathematics education
content guidelines. As a result, the content volume has been reduced and more
emphasis is put on interdisciplinary links as well as the practical usage of
knowledge and problem solving skills. Research data about changes in teaching
mathematics prove that such education content is more comprehensive and
more flexible than the traditional approach. It provides teachers with more
freedom in achieving their goals and allows to work according to students’
needs (Mathematics Education in Europe: Common Challenges and National
Policies, 2011).
In order to improve Latvian students’ competitiveness internationally
and provide them with necessary competences for career and life, Latvian
education system has been undergoing several important reforms lately which
concern, among other spheres, teaching mathematics. In 2006, Latvian
Regulations regarding the State Basic Education Standard and Basic Education
Subject Standards have been changed. In the new standard, more focus is put
on preparing the student for social and personal life, thus encouraging his or her
harmonic formation and development, providing a basis for the further
education and promoting responsible attitude towards himself or herself, the
family, society, the surrounding environment and the State (Regulations
regarding the State Basic Education Standard and Basic Education Subject
Standards, 2006). In teaching mathematics, the changes are reflected as a
development of a closer connection between theory and practice and active
involvement of students in teaching/learning process.
40
In the period from 2005 to 2011, two projects were taking place in
Latvia which contributed significantly to the changes in Latvian mathematics
education – “Natural Sciences and Mathematics” realised by the National
Centre for Education with the support of the European Social Funding and
“Curriculum Development and In-Service Training of Teachers in Science,
Mathematics and Technology” implemented with the support of the European
Union Structural Funds. As a result, natural sciences and mathematics
curriculum for grades 7 – 12 (2005 – 2008 – curriculum for grades 10 – 12;
2008 – 2011 – curriculum for grades 7 – 9) was developed in accordance with
world tendencies.
Analysis of theoretical and scientific literature, published within the
last 30 years, shows that since the end of the 20th century, a constructivist
teaching approach has been recognised as complying with contemporary
education requirements in Latvia and all over the world. Introduction of
constructivism changes radically mathematics acquiring process linking it to
everyday life instead of teaching abstract formulas, using creative approaches
for solving mathematical problems, allowing several possible solutions to a
mathematical problem. A student becomes an active participant of the
teaching/learning process, a teacher has a role of a helper (Brooks, Brooks,
1993). However, taking into consideration principles of complex adaptive
systems, the advantages of constructivism are not so unquestionable because
teachers’, students’, parents’ experience and views as well as traditions of
education system should be taken into consideration, too. The traditional or
knowledge transfer approach, which is opposing to constructivism, has a long
history in Latvia and its usage has also given good results. One of the research
objectives in the thesis is oriented towards finding out teachers’ priorities in
connection with teaching approach in the research sample.
Examining peculiarities of complex changes in any system, it should
be pointed out that the development of new curriculum and realisation of
projects do not guarantee positive changes in education process at school if
teachers’ views as well as norms and traditions existing in schools and the
society for decades do not change simultaneously and people who are involved
in the process lack a deeper insight into and confidence about the essence and
usefulness of the new approach. The reforms realised do not give the expected
results as regards the students’ attitude to and interest in mathematics as well.
According to the data provided by Ministry of Education and Science, in study
year 2013/2014 in bachelor study programme “Mathematics” in all Latvian
universities where it is possible to study it only 42 students were imatriculated
but, for example, in bachelor programme “Law” only in University of Latvia
249 students were imatriculated (Overview on higher education in Latvia,
2013). Graduates of secondary schools are not interested in further studies
connected with mathematics: the subject is considered difficult and the
profession of mathematician – is not appropriate for them (Mathematics
41
Education in Europe: Common Challenges and National Policies, 2011).
According to E. Gingulis (2005), the general lack of ability is not the factor that
causes main difficulties in learning mathematics; the “layers” of previous
negative experience are the ones to generate reluctance to mathematics in
students, to predispose them to possible failure, to cause stress situations which
make it difficult to show their best possible performance. People are not only
cognitive individuals, but also social beings with their own beliefs, emotions
and views that affect the the process of acquiring new knowledge (Nicolaidou,
Philippou, 2003).
According to the results of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation
and Development Programme for International Student Assessment which have
been obtained analysing the data collected during a period of four years (2010 –
2013) in 65 world countries, mathematics competence of 15 years old Latvian
students has improved. Statistically, the average achievements of Latvian
students do not differ significantly from the average indicators of OECD
countries as well as the achievements of students from France, Great Britain,
Iceland, Luxemburg, Norway, Portugal, Italy and Spain. However, in Latvia the
number of students who are able to solve mathematical tasks of higher
difficulty is still relatively low and, comparing with year 2003, it has not
changed (Geske, Grīnfelds, Kangro, Kiseļova, Mihno, 2013). The results of the
last international study (Trends in International Mathematics and Science
Study, TIMSS, 2007) within which the attitude of Latvian students towards
mathematics has been analysed, show that the attitude of 4th grade students
towards mathematics has become worse: during the period from 2003 to 2007
the group of the students with positive attitude has decreased by 6 % whereas
the group of the students with negative attitude has increased by 7% (Geske,
Mihno, 2008).
Implementation of new teaching approaches is complex and quite
unpredictable process. Hastily implemented reforms often cause confusion both
in teachers, who are used to work in a definite way and have considered it as
right and effective, and students, for whom the newly introduced things in
teaching/learning process are unfamiliar and, frequently, they are used
unprofessionally. As regards the effective organization of teaching/learning
process in Latvia, the main attention is still directed to students’ achievements,
fulfilment of curriculum, introduction of new methods while such affective
factors as teachers’ beliefs and students’ attitude and feelings, which exert a
substantial influence on all other factors, are often forgotten. Due attention
should be paid to the influence of social demographic indicators on
mathematics teaching/learning process as well because several international
researches reveal significant differences in such indicators as achievements and
attitude towards mathematics when comparing them according to socio-
demographic indicators (Ma, Kishor, 1997; Mubeen, Saeed, Arif, 2013). A
more complete study of the problem from a teacher’s point of view as well as
42
exploring students’ emotions, attitudes and perception would provide a deeper
understanding about education process and help to both plan and implement a
teaching/learning process that stimulates better results.
However, mathematics education is considered important in Latvia,
there have been conducted only some scientific researches in mathematics
education. As the most significant research in the sphere of mathematics
education conducted in Latvia lately the following doctoral thesis should be
mentioned: Cunska, A. (2013) Possibilities for Using ICT in Mathematics
Teaching at School; Kangro, I. (2010) Development of Students’ Mathematical
Thinking in the Process of Building Their Professional Competence; Lāce, G.
(2010) Competence of Latvian Primary School Mathematics Teachers in
Mathematics Didactics; Helmane, I. (2006) Correlation between Acquisition of
Mathematical Skills and Emotions of Primary School Children. There are no
studies available about the relationship between the teaching approach
preferred by a teacher and students’ self-efficacy, self-conception, anxiety,
perception and attitude towards a school subject. I. Helmane (2006) slightly
refers to this problem in her thesis mentioning the influence of affective factors
on mathematics teaching/learning process. I. Helmane has come to the
conclusion that the correlation between the acquisition of mathematical skills
and emotions of primary school children can be described as interaction
between a student’s positive emotions, his or her subjective action, a system of
purposeful training and application of the skills to real-life situations which
forms the basis of qualitative acquisition of a mathematical skill at a
corresponding level. Conclusions about Latvian mathematics teachers’ actions
and skills can be found in G. Lāce’s thesis (2010) where she analyses the
competence of Latvian primary school mathematics teachers in mathematics
didactics: purposeful planning of teaching/learning process, ability to explain
instructional content in different ways, purposeful work with tasks, justified
choice of teaching methods and forms, differentiated work with students with
different abilities, understanding about evaluation and ability to realize it,
purposeful use of IT in teaching/learning process.
Several broad researches about the influence of affective factors in
mathematics teaching/learning process have been carried out in Scandinavia,
such as M. Hannula’s dissertation (2004) “Affect in Mathematical Thinking
and Learning” and K. Kislenko’s dissertation “Exploring Pupils’ Beliefs about
Mathematics: Cases from Estonia and Norway”. M. Hannula describes in his
dissertation how such affective factors as emotions, attitude, perception, values
and motivation influence education process and how different learning
experiences influence affective factors. K. Kislenko in her dissertation proves
the connection between pupils’ beliefs about mathematics and their
achievements in the subject emphasizing teachers’ significant role in the
formation of these beliefs. The majority of surveyed pupils from Estonia and
43
Norway consider mathematics boring and confidence in their ability in
mathematics differs significantly between boys and girls.
The present research has been conducted among 9th grade students
because the 9th grade is a very important stage of education when students, to a
certain extent, have to decide their future by choosing direction for further
studies and often this choice is determined by feelings and emotions instead of
current achievements. A teacher is definitely an important participant of
teaching/learning process who, by choosing a teaching approach, is able to
influence not only the academic achievements of his/her students, but also the
students’ confidence in their abilities, their feelings as well as the attitude
towards the subject. Teaching approach selected by a teacher exerts a great
influence on teaching/learning process, students’ academic achievements, their
knowledge and skills, their attitude towards education and the definite school
subject, students’ beliefs about their abilities as well as their feelings and
emotions associated with the definite school subject (Wentzel, 2002).
Thus, relying on the previously mentioned theoretical and practical
considerations as well as the results of the previous studies, the author has
chosen the following topic for her research: “The Relationship between
Mathematics Teachers’ Teaching Approaches and 9th Grade Students’
Mathematical Self”.
Research problem
Despite the current curriculum reforms, quantitatively measurable
academic achievements: average marks, examination results, achievements in
competitions and Olympiads, are still used as the main criterion for evaluating
the quality of education whereas affective aspects as students’ attitude, feelings,
confidence in their ability are not considered as equally important.
Nevertheless, choices made by individuals in their lifetime are determined not
only by their objective skills and abilities, but also by different affective
factors; students’ choice of future profession, for example, does not depend that
much on their results in a definite sphere, it depends more on their attitudes and
beliefs about it. Due to various factors, a teacher is forced to put more focus on
students’ achievements at school instead of their emotional well-being which,
in the long run, can result in lower achievements as well as reluctance to the
definite subject because these factors are interconnected.
The aim of research: to find out what kind of relationship exists between the
teaching approach supported by mathematics teachers and their 9th grade
students’ mathematical self.
The object of research: relationship between teachers’ teaching approaches and
their students’ self in relation to the school subject.
44
The subject of research: relationship between mathematics teachers’ teaching
approaches and 9th grade students’ mathematical self.
Research questions:
1) What kind of teaching approaches do prevail in 7th – 9th grade mathematics
teachers’ beliefs about effective teaching and self-report about their
classroom practices?
2) What are qualitative and quantitative expressions of the indicators of 9th
grade students’ mathematical self?
3) What kind of relationships does exist among four aspects of the research: 1)
teaching approaches supported by mathematics teachers in their beliefs and
actions in the classroom, 2) their 9th grade students’ mathematical self
indicators, 3) teachers’ socio-demographic indicators, and 4) 9th grade
students’ socio-demographic indicators?
Research hypotheses:
1) A positive relationship exists between mathematics teachers’ beliefs
supporting the constructivist teaching approach and their students’
mathematical self.
2) A positive relationship exists between mathematics teachers’ self-report
about their own classroom practices oriented to the constructivist teaching
approach and their students’ mathematical self.
Research objectives:
1) to examine relevant scientific literature in pedagogy, psychology,
philosophy about the essence of teaching approaches and their variety,
theoretical and practical effectiveness, usage of teaching approaches in
teaching mathematics, students’ mathematical self;
2) to work out a research design relevant for the research problem, research
questions and hypotheses;
3) to select appropriate research methods and to verify their validity and
stability for conducting the research;
4) to study relationship between teaching approaches used by mathematics
teachers and 9th grade students’ mathematical self using the selected
quantitative and qualitative methods;
5) to analyze and interpret the collected data and to work out conclusions of
the thesis.
Arguments for defence:
1) Because of the complex structure of the phenomena, it is difficult to classify
mathematics teachers’ beliefs about teaching and their action in the
classroom into theoretically predefined groups. One should bear in mind as
well as that one teacher can think and act according to theoretically opposite
45
approaches at the same time. According to the profiles of teaching
approaches, Latvian 7th – 9th grade mathematics teachers can be divided
into three groups: the largest group constitutes teachers who, in their beliefs
and action, are in favour of the constructivist teaching approach, the second
group contains teachers who support separate elements of both the
constructivist and the traditional teaching approaches, and the smallest
group is formed of teachers who hold the traditional teaching approach.
2) About a half of the 9th grade students have succeeded in developing such
indicators of mathematical self as high mathematical self-efficacy, positive
mathematical self-conception and low mathematical anxiety, whereas the
situation for the other half of the students is quite opposite. Boys and
students at small-town and country schools as well as schools with minority
teaching programs tend to have higher mathematical self-efficacy, more
positive mathematical self-conception and lower mathematical anxiety.
Most of the students have developed or partially developed positive attitude
towards mathematics which is mainly associated with a school subject.
Students see mathematicians as smart and unusual individuals, but in
general the students’ attitude towards mathematicians tends to be neutral.
Students’ attitude towards their mathematics teachers is mostly positive. In
students’ opinion the most important qualities of a teacher are helpfulness,
good nature and ability to explain the material well.
3) In general, mathematics teachers’ support the constructivist beliefs and
their constructivist-oriented self-reports about action in the classroom
influence positively the development of their students’ mathematical self-
efficacy, self-conception, attitude towards mathematics, perception of
mathematics, mathematician and a mathematics teacher as well as reduce
mathematical anxiety. According to the research results the use of
constructivism at the lessons has a more positive influence on students’
mathematical self than support of the constructivist beliefs.
4) There exist significant correlations between students’ mathematical self-
efficacy, self-conception and anxiety, a teacher’s chosen teaching approach
and a student’s socio-demographic indicators (gender, place of living) as
well as teachers’ socio-demographic indicators such as age, education level,
place of living, education program realized at school and working
experience. The constructivist teaching approach in minority classrooms
realised by teachers with long working experience as well as the traditional
teaching approach in country schools tend to result in students’ higher
mathematical self-efficacy, more positive mathematical self-conception and
lower mathematical anxiety. The teaching approach which incorporates
elements of both the constructivist and the traditional teaching approach
negatively influences the indicators of girls’ mathematical self, whereas the
traditional teaching approach has the most negative impact on the indicators
46
of students’ mathematical self if it is used by teachers with bachelor’s
degree in the age of 36 – 45.
5) The variety in Latvian mathematics teachers beliefs and the increased
support for the constructivist teaching approach correspond with sustainable
education development tendencies but the context within which
mathematics teaching/learning process takes place indicates sustainable
development problems because almost a half of Latvian 9th grade students
from the research sample have undeveloped mathematical self-efficacy and
self-conception, high anxiety, their perception of mathematicians is based
on stereotypes existing in the society and many mathematics teachers lack
positive emotions about their job.
2. Theoretical and methodological framework, research
sample and stages
In the thesis the author dwells on teaching approaches which
correspond with constructivist (Brooks, Brooks, 1993; Dewey, 1988; Dionne,
1984; Dougiamas, 1998; Piaget, 1977; Vygotsky, 1978) and traditional
teaching ideas (Beck, 2009; Clements, Batista, 1990; Kim, 2005; Stofflett,
1998).
The general analysis of teachers’ beliefs is based on Calderhead’s
(1995), Kagan’s (1992), Pajares’s (1992) and Raymond’s (1993) viewpoints,
but the analysis of teachers’ beliefs about mathematics teaching and their
connection with real action mainly grounds on Beswick’s (2004, 2005),
Ernest’s (1989) and Thompson’s (1991) approaches.
The core of self-conception, the influence it exerts on a person’s life
and acquisition of definite skills is explained using one of the most widespread
motivation theories, namely the expectancy-value theory (Atkinson, 1957;
Eccles et.al., 1989; Wigfield, 1994; Wigfield, Eccles, 1992) as well as the
social comparison theory (Craven, Marsh, Print, 2000; Marsh, 2004; Marsh,
Hau, 2004; Rost, Sparfeld, Dickhouser, Schelling, 2005; Skaalvik, Skaalvik,
2002). Self-conception in the current research is examined in the context of
mathematics (Marsh, 1992; Bong, Skaalvik, 2003; Schunk, Pajares, 2005) in
association with students’ socio-demographic indicators (Hill, Lynch, 1983;
Ma, Kishor, 1997; Nagy et.al., 2008; Young, 1998) and teachers’ chosen
teaching approach (Hanze, Berger, 2007; Kim, 2005; Mayers, 1994).
Beliefs related to self-efficacy are one of the main components in
Bandura’s socio-cognitive theory (Bandura, 1977; 1997). Mathematical self-
efficacy in the current research (Hoffman, Schraw, 2009; Pajares, Miller, 1994;
Stevens, Olivarez, Hamman, 2006) is also studied in relation to students’ socio-
47
demographic indicators (Pajares, Miller, 1994; Pintrich, De Groot, 1990;
Seegers, Boekaerts, 1996) and the teaching approach used by the teacher
(Dorman, 2001; Friedel et.al., 2007; Gentry, Owen, 2004; Middleton, Migley,
1997).
Mathematical anxiety is studied in the current research (Kazelskis,
1998; Ma, Xu, 2004; Norwood, 1994; Satake, Amato, 1995). Several studies of
mathematical anxiety have been examined in connection with students’ socio-
demographic indicators (Lee, 2009; Luo, Wang, Luo, 2009; Meece, Wigfield,
Eccles, 1990) and a teacher’s teaching approach (Gresham, 2007; Newstead,
1998; Rule, Harell, 2006; Vinson, 2001).
The concept of attitude is viewed both in general (Aiken, 2002; Ajzen,
1988; Eagly, Chaiken, 1993; Gagne, Briggs, 1988; Rokeach, 1972) and in
connection with mathematics as a school subject (Ģingulis, 2005; Martino, Zan,
2010). The author describes interconnections between the attitude towards
mathematics and a teaching approach (Kislenko, Grevholm, Lepik, 2009;
Philippou, Christou, 1998). The concept of perception is studied within the
framework of the attribution theory (Fiske, Taylor, 1991; Heider, 1958; Glover,
Ronning, Brunning, 1990) and in relation to mathematics and mathematicians
(Ernest, 1996; Hannula, 2002; Grevholm, 2010; Picker, Berry, 2000). The
author analyses relationship between perception of mathematics,
mathematicians and teaching approach (Dogan-Dunlop, 2004; Fraser, Tobin,
1998; Thompson, 1992).
In the present thesis, the mixed methods approach is used which
implies integrating quantitative and qualitative research methodology: the
parallel design of the mixed methods approach using triangulation to compare
quantitative and qualitative data as well as methods for increasing validity of
the mixed research.
Quantitative data collection methods:
The survey on mathematics teachers’ beliefs (Lepik, Pipere, 2011) for 7th –
9th grade mathematics teachers which has been developed in order to
compare Baltic and Nordic mathematics teachers’ beliefs about
mathematics education. In the current thesis, the author has used the parts of
the survey related to teachers’ beliefs on effective teaching, teachers’ beliefs
on effective mathematics teaching and learning and teachers’ self-reports
about their own classroom practices.
The survey on non-cognitive skills for 9th grade students (Morony,
Kleitman, Lee, Stankov, 2013). In the current research the author uses only
the parts of the survey which contain statements about mathematical self-
efficacy, mathematical self-conception and anxiety.
48
Quantitative data analysis methods:
In quantitative data analysis, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, T-test for
independent variables, Mann-Whitney U test, correlation analysis, Chi
Square criterion, cluster analysis and factor analysis have been used.
For data validation, Cronbach’s alpha coefficient test has been used to prove
the adequacy of survey data for further analysis.
For processing quantitative survey data, SPSS 17.0 and 19.0 data processing
programmes have been used.
Qualitative data collection methods:
Visual research method – 9th grade students’ drawings (mathematicians,
mathematics);
Mathematics teachers’ phenomenological interviews;
9th grade students’ phenomenological interviews;
Projective verbal methods:
1) unfinished sentences method for 9th grade students about
mathematics, mathematicians and mathematics teachers;
2) mathematics teachers’ metaphors about a teacher’s profession.
Qualitative data analysis methods
In processing qualitative data, the following methods have been used:
drawing analysis (Burton, 2009; Rule, Harrell, 2006; Sumpter, 2010),
phenomenological analysis (Smith, Osborn, 2008), inductive qualitative
content analysis and analysis to determine the frequency of categories as
well as metaphor analysis (Löfström, Poom-Valickis, Hannula, 2011).
Research participants
The total number of participants in empirical research – 3478;
In the survey for 7th – 9th grade mathematics teachers 390 teachers have
taken part; simultaneously, metaphors from 353 respondents have been
gathered and four of these teachers have participated in phenomenological
interviews.
In the survey for 9th grade students a total of 3083 students have taken part;
the unfinished sentences method has been also included in the survey and
drawings from 61 student of the total number of respondents have been
gathered.
In phenomenological interviews five 9th grade students have participated.
Research stages:
2010/2011 – first stage (selection and analysis of scientific literature, working
out research design, approbation of surveys and their realization, collection and
analysis of students’ drawings)
49
2011/2012 – second stage (analysis of scientific literature, analysis of survey
data, content analysis of students’ answers in unfinished sentences, analysis of
mathematics teachers’ metaphors, working out questions for the interviews,
piloting, conducting students’ and teachers’ interviews)
2013/2014 – third stage (analysis and interpretation of mathematics teachers’
and students’ interviews, analysis of scientific literature, comparative analysis
of teachers’ and students’ data. Summarising the research results, improving
the theoretical part of the thesis. Completion and formatting of the thesis).
3. Scientific novelty and practical contribution of the thesis
Scientific novelty of the thesis
For the first time, theoretical conclusions about mathematical self-efficacy,
self-conception and anxiety concepts are accessible in Latvian.
The concept of a student’s mathematical self is introduced, theoretically
justified and empirically approbated.
For the first time, a research on relationship between mathematics teachers’
teaching approach and 9th grade students’ mathematical self is realised in
Latvia. Studying teachers’ teaching approaches including both teachers’
beliefs and self-reports can also be considered as a novelty.
Mathematics teaching/learning process is studied in an integrative way,
from the perspective of both teachers and students in order to achieve a
more complete understanding about it. The numerous research samples
make the study valid. For the first time in studying such a problem, both
qualitative and quantitative methods in data collection and processing have
been used which has been integrated in mixed methods research design.
The results of the present research are also a significant contribution in a
wider context: up to now, only few studies have been conducted outside
Latvia, with a narrower research scope and volume, on relationship between
mathematics teachers’ teaching approaches and several indicators of a
student’s mathematical self within one study.
Practical contribution of the thesis
In the process of changing the curricula and reforming education
politicians should take into consideration the conclusion of the present thesis
that one single teaching approach is not likely to give good results in all cases;
instead, one should pay more attention to the contextual factors and views and
beliefs of people involved in the education process. Taking into consideration
the fact that processes connected with education and teaching/learning process
at school should be viewed not only in the context of a definite educational
50
institution but in a wider context within the framework of complex adaptive
system principles.
The research of students’ attitudes towards and opinions about
mathematics and mathematicians gives insight into how teaching/learning
process should be improved in order to enhance students’ understanding of
mathematics usefulness and motivate them to choose a profession of
mathematician in the future. The present research can be used as a basis for
studying a student’s self and its indicators not only in mathematics, but also in
other school subjects as well as teaching/learning process at school in general.

5. Structure of the thesis .
The thesis contains 188 pages, 30 figures, 14 tables and 11 appendices.
The reference list is comprised of 437 entries in English, Latvian and Russian.
The thesis has the following structural components: introduction, two
chapters, limitations to the study, conclusions, list of references and
appendices. The first chapter gives insight into the philosophical view to
mathematics and mathematics education pointing out ways it influences
mathematics teaching/learning process at school. The variety of teaching
approaches in mathematics education is described analysing in detail the
constructivist and the traditional teaching approach in the context of
mathematics education. The author dwells on teachers’ beliefs on mathematics
and their relationship with the teachers’ actions in the classroom. The first
chapter provides a description of a student’s mathematical self and its
components: mathematical self-conception, self-efficacy, anxiety, attitude
towards mathematics, perception of mathematics and mathematicians. The
chapter contains also analysis of relationship between teachers’ teaching
approaches and students’ mathematical self. The second chapter outlines
methodological concerns of the present study, research process, research
sample and summary of the research results. At the end, limitations to the
conducted study are discussed at length, followed by conclusions.
5.1. Chapter 1. Teachers’ teaching approaches and students’
mathematical self
Mathematics and mathematics education in philosophical context
Mathematics education is based on two main beliefs about the essence
of mathematics – absolutism and fallibilism (Lerman, 1983). When the idea
that a teacher should simply pass knowledge to students started to be
questioned and discussions began about a student’s participation in knowledge
construction and the significance of a student’s emotions, attitudes and beliefs
in mathematics acquisition process, a need was felt to evaluate these
philosophies from the pedagogical perspective (Table 1).

Fallibilists believe that mathematics is not merely an abstract body of
knowledge: it offers means for solving a variety of everyday situations.
Mathematics teaching/learning process is not a search for the right answers, but
rather looking for creative mathematical problem-solving possibilities.
Compared to the absolutist view, fallibilists focus on other values, considering
people, their feelings and mutual relationship as the core value. This leads to a
relevant question: how these ideas can be realised into practice.
Fallibilists’ ideas of mathematics teaching/learning process can be
implemented mainly through the constructivist teaching approach, with an
emphasis on the learning process in which students explore and discover
everything themselves and discuss it and the content is linked to everyday life
situations. However, introduction of the fallibilist approach into
teaching/learning process has to be well-reasoned because mathematics consists
of a set of incontrovertible and stable truths and there is no need or necessity in
questioning and proving them. In this case, it is more appropriate to speak
about finding the midway between these philosophies.
Variety of teaching approaches in acquisition of mathematics
The teaching approach is defined as a dynamic correlation between the
teacher's actions, intentions and beliefs (Pratt, 1992). This implies that the
teaching approach includes the actual teachers’ actions in the classroom which
are based on their beliefs and intentions (as it is known, however,
implementation of a lesson plan or general introductions in the
teaching/learning process are not always that easy to manage).
The teaching approach chosen by a teacher has a significant influence
on the actual learning process, students’ academic performance, knowledge and
skills, their attitudes towards learning and the subject, the learners’ beliefs
about their skills as well as feelings and emotions in relation to the subject
(Wentzel, 2002). Teaching approaches are also classified as student-centred,
teacher-centred and content-centred (Hancock, Bray, Nason, 2003). According
55
to Huitt (2006), teaching approaches can be divided into behavioural, cognitive,
humanistic and constructivist. In the current research, the division into the
traditional or a teacher-centred approach and the constructivist or a student-
centred approach is used (Lord, 1999).
Constructivist ideas cannot be regarded as a modern innovation, they
have been evolving in pedagogy since the 17th century (Fox, 2001). According
to the objectivists’ beliefs, which the traditional teaching approach is based on,
knowledge reflects the real world, it is fixed and is not associated with an
individual (Jonassen, 1991). The constructivists’ view of knowledge is the
opposite: the human brain does not reflect the outside world but constructs an
individual’s experience and life representation through cognitive and emotional
processes in the social context as a subjective idea and conceptions. According
to the constructive teaching approach, the students are in the centre of
teaching/learning process with all their preferences and needs, including
emotional well-being, whereas the traditional teaching approach focuses on the
teacher and the content while the affective factors are moved to the
background. Therefore, it is assumed that the constructive teaching approach is
likely to exert a more positive influence on students’ emotional well-being
during mathematics lessons as well as their attitudes towards mathematics and
mathematicians.
Teachers’ beliefs about mathematics teaching and their connection with
action in the classroom
Beliefs help people to understand the meaning of life, the world and
themselves. They influence the way how an individual perceives new
information – adopting or rejecting it (Borg, 2001; Pajares, 1992). Since the
beliefs are a broad concept, in terms of teachers’ beliefs about mathematics
teaching, they are classified into the definite groups:
beliefs of the nature of mathematics;
beliefs of the nature of mathematics teaching and learning;
beliefs of the ideal mathematics teaching/learning process (Ernest, 1989).
A number of studies in various countries have shown that teachers’
beliefs on education correspond with their action in the classroom and influence
it (Buzeika, 1996; Frykholm, 1995; Haney, McArthur, 2002; Hashweh 1996,
Levitt, 2002; McClain, 2002; Roehrig, Kruse, 2005, Thompson, 1992). These
beliefs have more influence on teachers’ decisions in relation to the
teaching/learning process at school than teachers’ knowledge or education
standard guidelines (Clark, Peterson, 1986). However, there are some studies
that have found that teachers’ beliefs have a little impact on their actual
classroom activities (Simmons et.al., 1999).
56
Theoretical overview of students’ mathematical self Mathematical self is a construct, which by its nature is between such
constructs, previously mentioned and defined in scientific literature, as
“mathematical identity” and “mathematical self-conception”. The mathematical
self tries to integrate two notions characteristic to mathematical self-
conception – assessment of one’s understanding of mathematics and becoming
aware of one’s achievement in the subject – with the attitude towards one’s
achievement in mathematics, the subject in general and its specialists, which, in
its turn, is rooted in social constructivism und culture.
The author of the current research includes in the concept of students’
mathematical self both quantitative indicators (mathematical self-conception,
mathematical self-efficacy and mathematical anxiety) and qualitative indicators
(perception of mathematics, mathematicians, a mathematics teacher and
attitude towards them), which constitute a complementary view of
mathematical self. All these concepts can be united into a single construct
because they all characterize a student’s individual affective factors associated
with mathematics.
For a student with a developed mathematical self it is characteristic to
have: 1) developed positive attitude towards mathematics, mathematicians and
a mathematics teacher; 2) developed positive perception of mathematics,
mathematicians and a mathematics teacher; 3) low mathematical anxiety, high
self-efficacy and positive mathematical self-conception. Characteristics of a
student with an undeveloped mathematical self are as follows:
1) positive attitude towards mathematics, mathematicians and a mathematics
teacher is not developed; 2) positive perception of mathematics,
mathematicians and a mathematics teacher is not developed; 3) high
mathematical anxiety, low self-efficacy and negative mathematical self-
conception. It is important to emphasize, however, that there is a range of
mathematical self, not just the two opposite positions of self. In the current
research, the opposing positions were marked as developed and undeveloped
mathematical self in order to conduct the quantitative study and statistical
analysis of data.
Further, the previously mentioned indicators of mathematical self will
be defined.
Mathematical self-conception is students’ perception of or opinion
about their own mathematical abilities, confidence in their ability to learn
mathematics (Reyes, 1984). According to the social comparison theory, the
mathematical self-conception develops based on external references (the direct
comparison of one’s achievements with the achievements of other students in
the immediate environment) and internal references (the direct comparison of
one’s achievements in a particular subject with the achievements in other
school subjects) (Marsh, Hau, 2003).
57
Mathematical self-efficacy is a more specific construct than the
mathematical self-conception. Self-efficacy is an evaluation of one’s
competence in doing something in a certain context (Pajares, Miller, 1994).
Self-efficacy is considered to be a significant factor influencing achievement in
mathematics. Researchers claim that it is more important than the overall
ability of the human mind, gender, mathematics learning experience,
mathematical anxiety, mathematical self-conception and beliefs about the
usefulness of mathematics (Pajares, Miller, 1994; Stevens, Olivarez, Hamman,
2006). Students with higher mathematical self-efficacy are able to work longer
on complex mathematical problems and have fewer mistakes in calculation
(Collins, 1982; Hoffman, Schraw, 2009).
Mathematical anxiety is a multidimensional psychological construct
that involves complex factors such as the feeling of pressure, inappropriate
behaviour that interferes with working with numbers and solving mathematical
problems in different everyday situations and in academic contexts (Kazelskis,
1998).
Perception is the process by which information, obtained by the
senses, is organized and interpreted to create a meaningful experience (Lindsay,
Norman, 1977). Students’ perception of mathematics and mathematicians is
influenced by a learner’s internal factors (beliefs, attitude, previous knowledge
etc.) and the context in which the perception takes place – teaching/learning
methods and content as well as teachers’ actions.
Within the current research, attitude towards mathematics is defined
as like or dislike felt towards mathematics, tendency to engage in or avoid
mathematical activities, a belief that one is or is not good at mathematics as
well as views on usefulness of mathematics (Kislenko, Grevholm, Lepik,
2009). According to the previous studies, attitude towards mathematics is
influenced by teachers, peers and parents (Eccles, Jacobs, 1986; Hyde et.al.,
1990; Tocci, Engelhard, 1991). Teachers’ encouragement, beliefs and attitudes
(Uusimaki, Nason, 2004), parents' beliefs about the usefulness of mathematics
as well as parents’ and peers’ positive attitude towards mathematics promotes
positive attitudes in students (Wilkins, Ma, 2002).
Relationship between teachers’ teaching approaches and students’
mathematical self
Despite the fact that no extensive research about the impact on the
teacher's approach on students' perception of mathematics, mathematicians and
a mathematics teacher and attitude towards them as well as mathematical self-
efficacy, self-conception and anxiety has been made in the world, the results
already obtained indicate the superiority of the constructive approach over the
traditional approach to teaching (Afangideh, 2001; Eccles, 1989; Hanze, Berger
2007; Kazemi, Ghoraishi, 2012; Kim, 2005; Newstead, 1998; Papanastasiou,
2008; Simonson, Maushak, 2001).
58
The indicators that characterize a learner’s mathematical self are
influenced by a number of internal and external factors. In order to determine
the significance of this impact, the indicators of mathematical self were
compared by socio-demographic indicators such as the student’s gender, place
of living, educational program realised at school. According to the studies in
this area, the most significant differences are found comparing boys and girls –
boys usually have more positive indicators of mathematical self (Frost, Hyde,
Fennema, 1994; Luo, Wang, Luo, 2009; Ma, Kishor, 1997; Meelissen,
Doornekamp, 2004; Pajares, Miller, 1994; Pintrich, De Groot, 1990; Seegers,
Boekarts, 1996; Wilkins, Ma, 2002). All these indicators are complex and
multi-determined that is why they must be studied in a complex manner,
exploring them from different perspectives and using different research
methods.
5.2. Chapter 2. Research on relationship between mathematics
teachers’ teaching approaches and students’ mathematical self
In the current research, the author has used the triangulation
techniques comparing the data obtained with the various qualitative methods
and the data obtained using qualitative and quantitative methods and the partial
triangulation of data sources comparing the data obtained from teachers and
students. Figure 1 shows the triangulation scheme of the research of the
relationship between mathematics teachers’ teaching approaches and students’
mathematical self.

60
Quantitative analysis of relationship between 9th grade students’
mathematical self-efficacy, self-conception, anxiety and mathematics
teachers’ teaching approaches
At first, the author has focused on three indicators of 9th grade
students’ mathematical self – mathematical self-efficacy, self-conception,
anxiety – and 7th – 9th grade mathematics teachers’ beliefs about teaching
approaches and teachers’ self-reports about their own classroom practices.
According to the 3rd research question, all these indicators were studied in
relation to the socio-demographic variables. In the process of the analysis,
teachers’ beliefs and self-reports about their own teaching approaches were
studied in more detail, differentiating factors which constitute the approaches –
teachers’ beliefs about effective teaching, beliefs about effective mathematics
teaching and the self-reports about their own classroom practices – and
classifying them as corresponding to the constructivist or the traditional
teaching approach.

average ranking of students’ mathematical self-efficacy, self-conception and
anxiety in different socio-demographic groups
Figure 2 shows mean values of mathematical anxiety, self-efficacy and
self-conception for urban and rural students.
Figure 2. Mean values of mathematical anxiety, self-efficacy and self-
conception for urban and rural students
There are statistically significant differences in all three factors
between urban and rural students. According to quantitative indicators,
mathematical self of rural students is more developed (lower mathematical
anxiety, higher mathematical self-efficacy and more positive mathematical self-
conception) (T-test for interdependent samples, ).
61
Figure 3 shows mean values of mathematical anxiety, self-efficacy and
self-conception in general and minority education programs.
Figure 3. Mean values of mathematical anxiety, self-efficacy and
self-conception in general and minority education programs
Statistically significant differences have been found only in
mathematical self-efficacy (T-test for independent samples ).
Students who study in education programs for minorities have higher
mathematical self-efficacy.
Figure 4 shows mean values of mathematical anxiety, self-efficacy and
self-conception for boys and girls.
Figure 4. Mean values of mathematical anxiety, self-efficacy and
self-conception for boys and girls
All three factors depend on respondents’ gender (T-test for
independent samples ). Girls have higher mathematical anxiety and
lower mathematical self-efficacy and self-conception than boys. The most
significant differences were found in mathematical self-efficacy.
62
Analysis of correlation between mathematics teachers’ teaching approach and
students’ mathematical self-efficacy, self-conception and anxiety
The students were divided into two clusters (two-stage cluster
analysis):
Cluster 1 (51% of all the respondents, ) – developed
indicators of mathematical self: mathematical self-efficacy and self-conception
higher than the mean value, mathematical anxiety lower than the mean value.
Cluster 2 (49% of all the respondents, ) – undeveloped
indicators of mathematical self: mathematical self-efficacy and self-conception
lower than the mean value, mathematical anxiety higher than the mean value
(Figure 5).
Figure 5. Mean values for standardised factors in two identified clusters
The teachers were divided into three clusters (two-stage cluster
analysis):
Cluster 1 ( (39.2% of all the teachers)) – teachers who are in
favour of the constructivist teaching approach (beliefs supporting constructivist
teaching approach about effective teaching and effective mathematics teaching
higher than mean value, the teachers’ self-reports about their own classroom
practices correspond to constructivist teaching approach, support using
constructivist teaching approach in the classroom).
Cluster 2 ( (36.4% of all the teachers)) – teachers who equally
support the constructivist and the traditional teaching approaches (the teachers’
beliefs about effective teaching correspond more to principles of constructivism
but they support the traditional teaching approach as well, in their beliefs about
effective mathematics teaching/learning, they equally support the traditional
and the constructivist teaching approach and, in their classroom practices, they
slightly prefer the traditional teaching approach).
Cluster 3 ( (24.4% of all the teachers)) – teachers who support
the traditional teaching approach (the teachers’ beliefs about effective teaching
and effective mathematics teaching/learning higher than mean value, classroom
63
practices correspond to traditional teaching approach, support using the
traditional teaching approach in the classroom).
Further, the author has studied the distribution of students with
developed and undeveloped indicators of mathematical self in the three
identified clusters of teachers. The teachers who support the constructivist
teaching approach have been marked with “K”, the teachers who support both
the constructivist and the traditional teaching approach – with “T+K” and the
teachers who support the traditional teaching approach – with “T” (Figure 6).
Figure 6. Comparison of students’ mathematical self-efficacy, self-conception
and anxiety in relation to teaching approach chosen by a teacher
As it can be seen in Figure 6, there is no strong correlation between the
teaching approach chosen by a teacher and the studied indicators of students’
mathematical self , ). However, the indicators for students
whose teachers prefer constructivist teaching approach are slightly more
developed.
The research results show the difference between the impact of
teachers’ beliefs and self-report about their own classroom practices on
students’ indicators of mathematical self: self-efficacy, self-concept and
anxiety. It has been found out that teachers’ constructivist beliefs do not have a
positive impact on the indicators of students’ mathematical self, while the use
of constructivism in the classroom influence these indicators positively. The
analysis of the impact of teachers’ socio-demographic parametres shows that
there are several correlations between these parametres, the teaching approach
and the indicators of students’ mathematical self. It can be concluded that
students’ mathematical self-efficacy, self-conception and anxiety depend not
only on the teaching approach used by a teacher, but rather the interaction of
several factors, which include students’ gender characteristics, place of living,
education program and a number of factors specific to the teachers as
experience, education and age.

Qualitative analysis of 9th grade students’ perception of and attitude
towards mathematics, mathematicians and a mathematics teacher
Latvian 9th grade students’ attitude towards mathematics,
mathematicians and a mathematics teacher has been studied using the
unfinished sentences method. Students’ answers about mathematics can be
divided into three most common categories:
1) an important school subject ( ) “Mathematics is very important for
me”;
2) a favourite school subject ( ) “Mathematics is one of my favourite
subjects because I like calculations”;
3) a school subject/lesson ( ) “Mathematics is just a class to sit
through at school”.
Mathematics as a school subject associates for many students with
positive emotions ( ; 41%). Some of the students with positive
emotional attitude towards mathematics have pointed out that they are good at
mathematics and the subject is easy, for example, “Mathematics is one of my
favourite subjects and I think I’m good at it”. A neutral view on mathematics
has been identified in 788 students’ answers (37%). In these answers
mathematics is characterized just as a school subject or as a normal or an
important school subject: “Mathematics is a school subject”. Negative
emotions have been identified in 469 students’ answers (22%). Mathematics is
difficult, according to these students, which is the cause for dislike. The subject
seems unfamiliar, boring and fear-provoking. Despite the fact that a
pronounced majority of the students consider mathematics important, there are
some students who believe that the subject is insignificant, which is the cause
of their indifference to it.
Three most frequently mentioned categories in students’ answers
about mathematicians were the following:
1) Smart ( ): “Mathematicians are smart people who can find
something new and interesting on our planet. Discover many secrets of the
world”;
2) Good people ( ): “Mathematicians are very good people”;
3) Very smart ( ): “Very smart people because I think that
mathematics is a very difficult subject. Not everybody can become a
mathematician”.
The majority of the students have neutral emotions ( ; 72%).
For these students a mathematician is just a person whose job is connected with
mathematics, one who is good at it and has a developed logical thinking:
“People who work with many different numbers and tasks every day”. A
positive emotional attitude has been identified in 414 students’ responses:
“Very unique personalities, who over centuries have discovered universal
65
techniques to make our lives easier". In this category, a mathematician has been
mainly portrayed as a smart, respected, responsible, diligent person worth of
admiration and indispensable in the society. A negative emotional attitude has
been identified in 230 (10%) responses. These students describe a
mathematician as being different from other people because of the unusual
appearance, character attributes or cognitive abilities: “[They] have invented
stupid formulas to make our life more complicated. [They] hate children and
think only about themselves and the stupid mathematics”. or “People with their
imaginary ideal world, in which only mathematics exists”.
Most of the students 79.68% ( ) have a positive emotional
attitude towards their mathemtics teachers. In the description of a good
mathematics teacher students mention personal characterstics, professional
skills and appearance.
The analysis of students’ drawings shows that students’ vision of
mathematics is mainly associated with: 1) numbers (87%), including
mathematical operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; 2)
geometrical figures (80%) as circles, triangles, squares, etc.; 3) books (46%); 4)
school supplies (37%): pens, pencils, rulers, erasers; 5) a board (34%); 6)
furniture (27%): benches, tables; 8) people (15%). Many drawings contain
several things from this list. The students involved in the study see a
mathematician as 1) a lonely middle-aged man with glasses, dressed in a suit
and working with numbers; 2) a glad middle-aged woman who is a
mathematics teacher at school; 3) a thoughtful or an angry student who is
forced to learn mathematics at school.
The results of students’ phenomenological interviews show that
students prefer mathematics lessons which are organized according to the
principles of the constructive teaching approach.
Qualitative analysis of Latvian 7th – 9th grade mathematics teachers’
beliefs about teaching, their profession and self-reports about their own
classroom practices
According to the 7th – 9th grade mathematics teacher’s metaphor
analysis, the teachers have a personal interest in their work, they consider the
skills to teach the subject matter well having good knowledge of teaching
methods and approaches as very important, and a significant role in the
teaching/learning process is played by a student’s emotional well-being. All the
previously mentioned characteristics indirectly indicate teachers’ support to the
constructivist teaching approach, since introducing this approach in
teaching/learning process requires knowledge and skills for organising effective
teaching/learning process and establishing a positive emotional climate. The
large number of hybrid metaphors proves the fact that teachers are aware of the
multifaceted nature of their work and realise that the organization of a
successful teaching/learning process requires different skills and knowledge
66
from a teacher. The dominance of self-directed metaphors can imply that the
teachers do not separate their role as a teacher from other social roles; they
relate their work to themselves, as a person.
According to the mathematics teachers’ phenomenological interviews,
teachers' descriptions of an everyday and an ideal mathematics lesson largely
coincide and tend to conform more to the constructivist teaching approach
rather than the traditional teaching approach, which indicates that the
interviewed teachers both prefer and try to use elements of the constructivist
teaching approach in their everyday lessons.
The relationship between mathematics teachers’ teaching approaches and
9th grade students’ mathematical self – integration of qualitative and
quantitative data
The quantitative data analysis has revealed that the constructivist
teaching approach has a slightly more positive impact on the indicators of
students' mathematical self – self-efficacy, self-conception and anxiety – than
the traditional teaching approach. The analysis of students’ qualitative data has
shown that students prefer the constructivist teaching approach thus giving an
indication of the positive effect of the constructivist teaching approach on
students’ attitude towards mathematics as well as perception of mathematics
and mathematicians.
Although the mathematics teaching/learning process is a complex
process, influenced by several internal and external factors, the tendencies
indicate a positive impact of using the constructivist approach in mathematics
teaching/learning process on development of quantitative and qualitative
indicators of students' mathematical self, taking into consideration that all these
indicators correlate and are mutually related.
6. Limitations to the study
As a first limitation to the current study, drawbacks in the formation of
the research sample have to be mentioned. The samples of Latvian 7th – 9th
grade teachers and 9th grade students have been non-randomised. Only those
teachers have been involved in the study who, in response to the researchers’
invitation, have voluntarily agreed to participate in the research and have been
willing to involve their students in it. This implies that the respondents of this
study have been composed of most active teachers who take a particular
interest in educational and research processes and follow the new tendencies in
mathematics teaching/learning process which can have resulted in the
dominance of the constructivist beliefs among teachers. The 9th grade students
67
taking part in the research have been tied to their mathematics teachers whose
teaching process may have been representing a definite teaching approach
which may have influenced the students’ research results. An additional
limitation concerning the interviewed teachers’ sample is homogeneity
according to gender and place of living – all the interviewed teachers are
women and represent Latgale region. The choice of gender of the teachers
taking part in the current research reflects the real situation in Latvia. However,
the obtained results cannot be related to the countries where the distribution of
male and female mathematics teachers is more proportional.
Next limitation to the conducted study is connected with the use of
research methods. In order to ensure a greater reliability of the data and to
identify possible changes over time, repeated measurements are often
conducted. In this research, however, the teachers’ and students’ surveys have
not been repeated. Reliability of the students’ data may have been affected by
the length of the internet survey (about 45 minutes), which may have had an
impact on the students’ concentration ability (greater chance of accidental
mistakes, not coming to the core of the question), as well as the fact that the
survey has been carried out in the virtual environment that is generally
associated with greater anonymity and freedom and not perceived seriously
enough.
In the current research, the author compares the students’ data
obtained using different qualitative and quantitative methods but it has to be
pointed out that the sample of students participating in phenomenological
interviews is not the same sample as students participating in the internet
survey or making drawings because the interviews have been conducted two
years after the other data collection. Mathematics teachers participating in the
interviews have been selected from the sample that has been participating in the
survey, but the interviews have been conducted 1.5 – 2 years later. As applies
to the indicators of research rigour, it has to be mentioned that triangulation of
data sources and theoretical triangulation have not been used during the
research.
7. Conclusions
Teachers’ work at school is largely determined by their beliefs, which are
based on an individual’s philosophical view on mathematics and
mathematics teaching/learning process in correlation with such contextual
factors as a teacher’s education, work experience, place of residence and
educational program realised at school. Latvian 7th – 9th grade mathematics
teachers, who took part in the research, according to their beliefs about
68
effective teaching and self-reports about their own classroom practices, can
be divided into three groups. The supporters of the constructivist teaching
approach are slightly dominating in mathematics teachers’ beliefs and self-
reports about their own classroom practices (39.2%), followed by the
teachers whose beliefs and self-reports about their own classroom practices
have features of both constructivist and traditional teaching approaches
(36.4%), but the smallest group (24.4%) consists of mathematics teachers
supporting the traditional teaching approach.
An important role in mathematics teaching/learning process is played not
only by students’ cognitive skills, but also a student’s mathematical self,
which includes such qualitative indicators as students’ perception of
mathematics, mathematicians and a mathematics teacher and attitude
towards them as well as quantitative indicators such as mathematical self-
efficacy, self-conception and anxiety. All the indicators of mathematical
self are interrelated and characterise a student’s individual affective factors
related to mathematics. About a half of Latvian 9th grade students have
developed quantitative indicators of mathematical self (low anxiety, high
self-efficacy, positive self-conception) but the other half have undeveloped
quantitative indicators of mathematical self (high anxiety, low self-efficacy
and negative self-conception). Most of the students have a developed or a
partially developed positive attitude towards mathematics which is mainly
associated with a school subject. Although the majority of the students did
not have any direct contact with mathematicians, they see mathematicians
as smart and strange individuals, but in general the students’ attitude
towards mathematicians tends to be neutral. Whereas students’ attitude
towards their mathematics teachers is mostly positive. In students’ opinion
the most important qualities of a teacher are helpfulness, good nature and
ability to explain the material well.
The research mainly focuses on studying relationship between a teacher’s
teaching approach and their students’ indicators of mathematical self. There
is a correlation between the teaching approach chosen by a mathematics
teacher, students’ mathematical self as well as students’ and teachers’ socio-
demographic variables.
There is a statistically significant correlation between quantitative indicators
of students’ mathematical self and the constructivist teaching approach. The
use of constructivism in mathematics teaching/learning process contributes
to establishing positive learning environment in the classroom with
emphasis on cooperation and students’ active participation in the
teaching/learning process and the development of their knowledge and
skills, relating knowledge with the daily life necessities, the teacher’s role
as an advisor and students’ emotional well-being in the classroom thereby
positively influencing students’ mathematical self. This corresponds with
69
principles of sustainable education, according to which the aim of education
is to develop not only intellectual, but also emotional, social and spiritual
potential, moving the focus from teaching specific facts to creation of an
environment which would stimulate students’ creative and cognitive
interaction with the world.
There is also a correlation between qualitative indicators of students’
mathematical self and the constructivist teaching approach. The students’
description of an ideal lesson corresponds to characteristics of the
constructivist teaching approach which allows concluding that using the
constructivist teaching approach in mathematics teaching/learning process
positively influences students’ attitude towards mathematics and their
perception of mathematics and mathematicians.
The analysis of the correlation among students’ and teachers’ socio-
demographic variables, teachers’ teaching approach and indicators of a
student’s mathematical self shows that a student’s mathematical self is more
developed under the following conditions: 1) if the teacher uses the
constructivist teaching approach in a minority class; 2) if the traditional
teaching approach is used in rural schools; 3) if teachers with working
experience of more than 25 years use constructivism. The indicators of a
student’s mathematical self are less developed under the following
conditions: 1) if the teacher supports both traditional and constructivist
teaching approaches girls have less developed indicators of mathematical
self; 2) if the teachers with bachelor’s degree use the traditional teaching
approach; 3) if the teachers in the age of 36 – 45 use the traditional teaching
approach. There is a difference between how teachers’ beliefs and
corresponding activities in the classroom influence students’ mathematical
self-efficacy, self-conception and anxiety. Teachers’ constructivist beliefs
have no positive impact on the indicators of students’ mathematical self,
whereas the use of the constructivist teaching approach in the classroom
exerts a positive influence. Thus, it can be concluded that teachers’
constructivist beliefs alone are not likely to ensure development of the
indicators of students’ mathematical self, but the real use of constructivist
principles in the classroom can contribute to developing students'
mathematical self.
There are significant correlations between the indicators of students’ mathematical self (self-efficacy, self-conception and anxiety), and students’ socio-demographic variables: gender, place of living and education program realised at school. The strongest correlation is observed in connection with gender: boys’ indicators of mathematical self are more developed than girls’. The students from country and provincial towns have more developed indicators of mathematical self than the students from towns. The impact of education program realised at school is not that significant,
70
however, students from schools with minority education programs tend to have slightly more developed indicators of mathematical self.
The variety in Latvian mathematics teachers beliefs and the increased support for the constructivist teaching approach correspond with sustainable education development tendencies but the context within which mathematics teaching/learning process takes place indicates sustainable development problems because almost a half of Latvian 9th grade students from the research sample have undeveloped mathematical self-efficacy and self-conception, high anxiety, their perception of mathematicians is based on stereotypes existing in the society and their mathematics teachers lack positive emotions about their job.
The use of constructivist teaching approach in mathematics teaching/learning process has a positive impact on development of students’ mathematical self if certain contextual conditions are fulfilled which means that the hypotheses are proven studying the current research sample.
