In calendar year 2006, there were 51 fatal crashes involving teen drivers ages 16 and 17. In those fatal crashes, 25 teen drivers, 25 passengers, and 2 pedestrians were killed.

The risk of motor vehicle crashes is higher among 16 to 19-year-olds than among any other age group. In fact, per mile driven, teen drivers ages 16 to 19 are four times more likely than older drivers to crash (IIHS 2006).

Between 2002 and 2005, young drivers were involved in eleven hundred fatal crashes during weekday periods, almost as many as weekends (a little more than 1200).
This means that commuting home from school between 3 to 5 PM, may be just as harmful to your health as driving during high-risk weekend hours.
