1. Visual Arts Center/Segovia
Segovia is a candidate to be the European capital of culture for the year 2016 and the Arts and
Technology Campus is essential for that purpose. The project includes exhibition, convention and
educational spaces.
The campus has an area of 72 500 m² and it is a fundamental piece on the urban plan
of the Municipality. The site has a strategic location near the new AVE station and by side of the
principal access to the urban center Carretera de Madrid.
Itinerary as a space generator. To create the Visual Art Center I generate a sequence of spaces
that have the ability to transform into anything (for example a workshop can become an exhibition
space the moment it's included within the course of visitors' center)
Five buildings compose the Arts and Technology Campus: shopping and leisure center,
researchers' residence, I+D center, convention center and Visual Arts exhibition and production
Center.
The Visual Arts Center‘s design responds in a receptive way to its use. The construction
is comprised of five volumes wrapped by a homogeneous facade. Distribution of uses depends
on an itinerary created exclusively for the centre to explore all the art processes, from the creation
to the exhibition/sale. These are displayed at three different levels within the building: on the floor
plan there are server programmes such as cafe-restaurant, restrooms and maintenance rooms;
workshops are located on the medium level, establishing here the height of reference; and the
exhibition rooms are placed on the highest levels, always having the workshops as a reference.
The packaging is a continuous and dynamic glazing made out of rhombi that is the quintessential
of the project.
2. Complexo acuaticorecreativo/Sada
Sada is a little town in the coast of Galicia, North Spain. The City Council commisioned the
rehabilitation of the promenade that had to include sport areas and natural swimming pools, in
order to dynamise the shore and atract new visitors to the holiday town.
The design for the acuatic-leisure complex responds in a receptive way to its context while
also creating a landmark for the town.
Sada is known by its long-standing tradition of fishing, so this is taken to the extreme in the
design. In other words, to use the town’s historic memory to recreate the old images of boats by
the seaside.
The complex is formed by a 84 700 m² park in which it is set the sport, leisure and swimming
pool areas. The park’s circulations are generated in an organic form, weaving paths, so that create
voids to fill with the complex programmes.
The construction is situated in the north-west of the park. It’s comprised by four separated pieces
made of wood frames, producing the traditional image of boats resting on the shore. Swimming
pools are placed by their side, becoming vessel-prints on the sand.
3. Basque Culinary Center/San Sebastian
Mondragon Unibertsitatea commissioned a new gastronomic faculty and research centre in San
Sebastián. The plot is located in Miramon Technologic Park, between residential and industrial
areas, and the park is sited in a privileged environment; it is a town among high living standards
and against a beautiful landscape.
My proposal lays a croissant on the land, playing a complex game of floors becoming roofs
and stairs conquering its segregated volumes. I took it from How to lay-out a croissant by Enric
Miralles.
The building emerges from the earth and is comprised by two rising volumes covered by a
continuous dynamic roof. Distribution of uses depends on density and professionalism sliding-
scales, set in two different poles within the building, which meet an intermediate volume. Pieces
are geometrically different: more orthogonal for teaching uses (classrooms, teachers, offices ...)
and restaurant and leisure are set in an organic extension. Connection volume distributes kitchens
and labs associated to principal wing programmes. The edifice is a two-storey volume with a
passable roof linking all the pieces. The irregular folding of the covering characterizes the
erection.
