A Choir Member Wrote While Her Minister
Prayed!
Hymns have some"mes been wriLen under rather
strange circumstances. For example they have been wriLen
aboard ships, on trains, in railway sta"ons, on busy streets,
at deathbeds, by the sea and in the quiet of scholarly librar-
ies. For example, Charles Wesley oDen wrote while riding
horseback. John Wesley some"mes wrote while in his bug-
gy. Blind Fanny Crosby dictated verses wherever she was.
John B. Dykes composed music while walking. Some hymn
words were sung to music originally composed for secular
songs. Many a hymn tune was composed a century or more
before or aDer the words had been wriLen.
John T. Grape lived in Bal"more, MD. He played the
organ at a Methodist church there. He made no claim to
being a composer but modestly said he loved to “dabble” at
wri"ng music.
Mrs. Elvina M. Hall also lived in Bal"more. She en-
joyed singing in the choir at the church where Grape played
the organ. She made no claim to being a poet but occasion-
ally “tried her hand” at wri"ng nevertheless.
One day in 1865 organist Grape was dabbling at
wri"ng music when he came up with a tune that he thought
might have merit. However, he didn’t bother to send his
composi"on to a publisher. Instead, he handed it to his min-
ister and thought no more about it.
One Sunday morning in the same year, 1865, Mrs.
Elvina Hall was siPng in the “choir loD” of the church in Bal-
"more when Mr. Schrick began a prayer which became quite
lengthy. While the prayer went on and on, Mrs. Hall
thumbed through her songbook and began scribbling some-
thing on the flyleaf of The New Lute of Zion. By the "me
Schrick said amen, Mrs. Hall had wriLen a four-stanza poem!
Like organist Grape, Mrs. Hall gave her poem to her
minister. When he read the poem, he realized that the
words fiLed nicely the music organist Grape had given him
several days earlier.
Obviously, hymns have been wriLen under some-
"mes diverse circumstances however, many a conven"onal-
ly composed hymn failed to enjoy the popularity of this one
which was wriLen in a songbook while a preacher prayed a
long prayer!
“I hear the Savior say,
Thy strength indeed is small,
Child of weakness, watch and pray,
Find in Me thine all in all.”
“Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe,
Sin had le# a crimson stain, He wash’d it white as
snow.”
