This brochure provides an introduction to the potential and strengths of medical technology business location Heilbronn, Germany. Top calibre technology ‘Made in Heilbronn’ for people’s well-being. We are working to continue this success story. And perhaps some day they will talk about ‘bringing owls to Athens’ in the context of a brochure on the medical technology industry in Heilbronn. We hope you enjoy reading about us.
Publishing a brochure about automotive industry centre Heilbronn could be likened to bringing owls to Athens. And not only because of the latest major AUDI AG investments in the northern part of
the city. Although overshadowed by this and other established industries, the second-largest city in greater Stuttgart has become a key location for the manufacturers, suppliers and engineering services providers of the medical technology industry. The significant financial commitment of the Zukunftsfonds Heilbronn GmbH & Co. KG (ZFHN) future fund and the excellent general conditions in Wohlgelegen Future Park, a state-of-the-art technology park, are the mainsprings of this dynamic development.
Strong regional partners – the city of Heilbronn, the IHK Heilbronn-Franconia chamber of com-merce, ZFHN, Heilbronn University and the Stadtsiedlung Heilbronn housing company – have joined together to make this plan a reality. They are working in close collaboration with

And many technology companies and know-ledge-based service providers, well known in professional circles, are also located there. Beyond medical technology, they come from sectors such as software and IT,
environmental techno-logy, architecture and advertising. In addition to its economic strength, Heilbronn features an impressively high quality of life. A variety

... the heart of the ‘region of global market leaders’ Heilbronn-Franconia, the scene of ‘Kathy of Heilbronn’, a dynamic university city and the largest red wine region in Germany – without a doubt, Heilbronn is a city with many facets. The appealing, small metropolis in the state of Baden-Württemberg also looks back on a long tradition as a successful business location. Today, companies such as AUDI, Unilever (whose KNORR brand comes from Heilbronn), the FrieslandCampina dairy, INTERSPORT (the retailer cooperative for sporting goods established in Heilbronn), Kaufland and Baier & Schneider (manu-

Heilbronn thinks children are very special.
Starting on 1 January 2008, Heilbronn
was the first city in Germany to enable all
children ages three and older to attend
one of the almost 90 kindergartens and
day care centres in the city – free of
charge. And the city has also increased the
number of day nursery slots significantly.
Today, all primary schools and most
secondary schools in Heilbronn provide
seven hours or more of lessons and
leisure activities. With five secondary
schools orientated to a general education
and three vocational secondary schools,
Heilbronn serves around 20,000 pupils.
Additional services such as a library
for children and youths, an art school
for youths and Radelrutsch, a theatre
for children and youths, make it easy
for families to strike a perfect balance
between work and family life.
And Dual Career Network takes care of
the needs of the partners of specialists,
managers and academics, helping the
entire family feel at home in its new
city. After all, partners and spouses
should also be able to realise their own
professional ambitions and leisure
activities in the Heilbronn area.

invite people to shop and spend time in the city. Lively comedies and larger-than-life dramas in the Heilbronn Theatre, concerts by the renowned Württemberg Chamber Orchestra, art exhibitions in the municipal museum or the Vogel-mann Art Centre and cabaret and variety shows add metropolitan flair to the atmosphere. experimenta, the largest science centre in southern Germany, has established itself in a short time as one of the most popular attractions in the region, turning children and families into natural sciences and technology enthusiasts. The city‘s wide range of restaurants and over 400 sport, music and hobby clubs help newcomers quickly establish themselves in the city. The climax of the crowded
calendar of events and symbol of the pleasure-seeking region is the annual Heilbronn Wine Village, which invites people of all ages to a convivial wine festival. Above and beyond the wine festival and the local wine gardens, grape varieties such as Trollinger, Riesling and Lemberger have left their mark on the city. It is located at the centre of a cultivated landscape featuring countless sunny slopes with vine-yards perfect for touring on foot or by bicycle. And starting at April 26th 2019, Heilbronn will be treating visitors from Germany and abroad to the cheerful, colourful German Garden Show (BUGA) for six months – showing them the exemplary results of an innovative, sustainable urban development plan at the same time. www.heilbronn.de

BUGA plans for a Neckar habitat. The functional general conditions are also excellent. The planning laws allow demand-compatible utilisation, to the point of industrial production. And the state-of-the-art fibre-optic and VDSL infrastructure is already in place. The Science and Technology Centre (WTZ) is the heart of the technology park. It was funded by ERDF funds from the EU and budgets from the state of Baden-Württemberg – a total of around €9.2 million. WTZ Heilbronn GmbH, a subsidiary of the Stadtsiedlung housing company, is the project
administrator. Not only does the imposing WTZ III section offer additional rental space to small and mid-sized firms, as do WTZ I (offices) and WTZ II (laboratories), but it also provides conference and meeting rooms, food service and rooms for needs-compatible day care and health-related fitness
training – true added value for all users. In the ideal case, the personal contacts made there will spark the next ideas for the
life-saving high tech products of the future. www.wohlgelegen.de

I really like about Heilbronn are the local
stakeholders‘ very successful efforts to
create ideal conditions for top-flight tech-

‘In Heilbronn, I appreciate above all the outstanding infrastructure, the strong business environment and the excitement in the air generated by the innovative companies in the future park.’
With a fund volume worth hundreds of millions of euros, Zukunftsfonds Heilbronn (ZFHN) is one of Germany’s major venture capitalists. As a technology holding company, ZFHN makes investments in the €0.5 to €10 million range in innovative, promising start ups that are en-couraged to move their company headquarters to Heilbronn in the medium term. Its credo is ‘Entrepreneurs helping entrepreneurs’, and the fund’s responsible parties understand themselves as entrepreneurial partners who support young companies with capital and more: a large industrial network in the Heil-bronn-Franconia economic region, efficient investment controlling and strategic consulting – in the context of international joint ventures as well. These services are privately financed, which ensures the financing and development of the firm on a sustainable basis. ZFHN in-vests early in the process – from the seed and start-up phases to the expansion phase – and stays the course as long as both parties agree that it makes sense to do so. With a current total of 15 firms in its portfolio, ZFHN is strate-gically orientated to further expansion, with a focus on the medical technology and clean technology areas. www.zf-hn.de

The city of Heilbronn has a Business
Development Office, which is the initial
contact point for all companies and inves-
tors in the Heilbronn business location.
It guides and supports firms as they deal
with administrative issues, providing its
know-how and contacts informally and
free of charge. With tools such as brochu-
res and the image film about Heilbronn
as a business location, the office also
assists companies’ recruiting efforts. And
it is active in the Dual Career Network in
Heilbronn.
Established in 1856, Stadtsiedlung Heil-
bronn GmbH is responsible for a diverse
range of housing construction activities,
including the high-value Neckar Terraces
in Heilbronn. The firm also headed the
project development for Wohlgelegen
Future Park, and is the lessor for Innova-
tionsfabrik (IFH), a new business centre.
Innovative new business founders and
young technology firms both benefit from
another collaboration: Stadtsiedlung and
the Business Development Office work
closely with Business Angels Network
Venture Forum Neckar. And they can find
space to fit their needs at the IFH and WTZ.

The medical technology cluster in Heilbronn is a nucleus for Heilbronn’s
profile as a high tech business location. From the city of Heilbronn to
Wohlgelegen Future Park, a new axis of innovation connects the Dieter
Schwarz Foundation campus, the experimenta science centre and the
Innovationsfabrik to BUGA 2019 and the new Neckarbogen district. In
conjunction with ZFHN, the medical technology companies are an intrinsic
component of and driving force behind the development of this new axis
of innovation. The Heilbronn medical technology cluster is located in
the Heilbronn-Franconia economic region, and closely connected to the
Baden-Württemberg high tech centre. As the initiator of the Heilbronn
MedTechForum, the IHK Heilbronn-Franconia supports the development
of this cluster – it is part of the strong Heilbronn-Franconia cluster region.

With around 4,000 employees, SLK-Kliniken
Heilbronn GmbH is the largest, most capable
health service provider in the region. It offers
top calibre medical care. Without state-of-the-
art medical technology, it is impossible to
deliver top quality medical care. This is why
the SLK Clinic Network has its own medical
technology department, which closely
co-operates with the industry. By regularly
giving feedback to manufacturers, the SLK
Clinic Network makes an important contri-
bution to development and quality assurance.
Continuous investment in the latest medical
procedures and devices guarantees our
patients a steadily increasing level of treat-
ment. In 2010 and 2011 alone, we invested
over €50 million. For example, we completely
renovated the radiology department in 2010.
The removal of the Neurology Clinic to the
Gesundbrunnen location and its integration
there is a further example. And when it comes
to the new clinic investments at the locations
Gesundbrunnen and Plattenwald, we are
investing almost one-quarter of the total
investment volume of around €300 million in
new medical technology. www.slk-kliniken.de
