Our future scientists are well represented by Marco Lee who lives in our area and attends James Ruse Agricultural high School.
Marco represented Australia at The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO). This is an annual competition for the world’s most talented chemistry students at the secondary school level.
Nations around the world send a team of four students, who are tested on their chemistry knowledge and skills in a five-hour laboratory practical and five-hour written theoretical examination.
I met Marco in Parliament House and saw him presented with his official team blazer. Marco was part of a group of our young people selected to represent Australia in the 2012 International Olympiads in Science, Informatics and Mathematics.
The Olympiad programs reach many thousands of talented students each year. The International Olympiads are held annually under the auspices of UNESCO. They are regarded as the ‘Olympic Games’ for Science, Informatics and Mathematics students.
It is a huge honour to even be selected for this international competition and my warm congratulations to Marco.
Marco went to Washington DC in July, and won a Bronze Medal. Further information on Marco’s success can be found at www.icho2012.org

The funding will be used to help school students access interesting and engaging maths and science lessons. This follows the Chief Scientist’s Report earlier this year.
Peter Garrett spent time with children from Hurstville Public School as they went about several experiments in their classroom designed to give them hands-on knowledge of different aspects of science.
Congratulations to students from Hurstville Public School who have shown a high level of aptitude in the sciences.
Boost for science in local schoolsFollowing the Federal Government’s announcement of $16.9 million nationally to encourage students to engage with Maths and Science, Minister Peter Garrett MP visited hurstville Public School to meet local students.

Fighting to save our schools & TAFEs
This decision is very disappointing and I know people will be surprised. While in Parliament in mid September, with the Prime Minister and the
Minister for School Education, the Peter Garrett MP, and several other MP’s, I met with representatives from Catholic and Independent schools.
They were very concerned by this decision and contacted their parents and friends. Some of their comments are printed below.
I have received many calls and emails from people in the community concerned about the NSW Government’s decision to cut $1.7 billion in funding from our schools and TAFEs.
Dr Geoff Newcombe, Executive Director, Association of Independent Schools (AIS) NSWOur funding cuts of course will be front line … I think at a time when we’re looking for investment, we’re looking to focus on teacher quality, we’re all a little confused as to why the government would start cutting education.
Maurie Mulheron, NSW Teachers Federation President, said a recent AUSPOLL survey reveals:
More than 70% oppose the $1.7 billion in cuts to public education announced by the O’Farrell Government and only 14% support them.
70% said the cuts would have a negative impact on children in schools.
82% said they believed it was either important or very important to increase funding for public schools.
Only 28% said they would have voted for Mr O’Farrell if they knew he would make the cuts.
daily telegraph, 12.09.2012Tafe fee increase a blow to students
WhAT ThESE CUTS WILL MEAN With no additional funds to cover cost-of-living
and salary increases, there will be pressure on school fees, and it may not be possible to continue some important programs set up to help students, especially those who are the most marginalized or disadvantaged in their learning.
There will need to be an ongoing review of staffing levels for some key projects, especially those conducted by Catholic Education Office personnel.
I cannot emphasise strongly enough what a cruel blow this is to the thousands of everyday Catholic parents who have chosen to send their child to a Catholic school.
Dr Dan White, Executive Director, Catholic Schools. Letter to parents/carers, 18 September 2012

St George TAFE teachers condemn cutsOn Monday 17 September, St George TAFE College teachers and students, firefighters and nurses protested outside the TAFE’s Kogarah campus about the NSW Government’s funding cuts.
Prior to the state election in 2011, the then Shadow Minister for Education, Piccoli and Shadow Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner signed pledges to Invest in TAFE. This pledge promised the citizens of NSW they would, if elected:
Guarantee TAFE funding
Invest in permanent TAFE teaching positions
Ensure affordable access to all.
You can fight the cuts to our schools and TAFEs by signing petition at the bottom of the page or online at: www.stopthecuts.com.au or at my website at: www.darylmelhammp.com
I oppose Barry O’Farrell’s cuts to NSW schools and TAFE. These cuts will hurt every school and every student in NSW. We call on Barry O’Farrell to reverse his cuts and rule out any cuts to education, TAFE and school funding.

CorrectionThanks to those eagle-eyed readers of Banksview who picked up the ‘typo’ in the last edition.
No, the Government didn’t give $8 billion to soccer in western Sydney but as was correctly pointed
out by three people who contacted my office, the figure was $8 million.
