Chapter One
Metrics & Equipment
Mrs. Wolfe
Mathematics is the Language of Science.
• Quantitative Data• Most data involves
numbers.
• Scientists collect data using the METRIC SYSTEM.
Three Basic Units of Measurement
• Weight – Grams
• Distance – Meters
• Liquid – Liters
Adding Prefixes to Basic Units
• KILOgram• MILLIgram
• KILOmeter• MILLImeter
• KILOliter• MILLIliter
Prefixes
• Kilo (K)
• Hecto (H) Large Measurements
• Deka (Dk)
• Deci (d)
• Centi (c) Small Measurements
• Milli (m)
How can you remember them in order?
King
Henry
Died
By ----------------------(BASIC UNITS: GRAMS, METERS,
LITERS) Drinking
Chocolate
Milk
Why should you know them in order?
• It makes it easy to convert measurements.
• Example Problem: How many centimeters are in 15 meters?
*See Handout*
King
Henry
Died -Put your pencil on the prefix that you start with.
(meters)
By -Move your pencil to the final prefix
(CENTImeters)
Drinking -Count how many times you move your pencil.
Chocolate -Move the decimal point like you moved your pencil.
Milk
TIME FOR A WS!!
Chemistry Equipment*See Handout*
• There are lots of equipment that you will need to recognize in the lab.
• You will have a few days to learn these names! Then….a quiz!
