Palo Alto & Resaca de la Palma
• Mexican and U.S. troops battle at Palo Alto & Resaca de la Palma – U.S. wins
• President Polk urged Congress to declare war – they did on May 13, 1846
• General Taylor marches into Mexico - • U.S. Army General Winfield Scott goes by
way of Gulf of Mexico and lands in Molino del Rey in Sept. 1847– Mexico sustains heavy losses– U.S. occupies Mexico City
Texans in the War
• Fighting gave Texans a chance to “Remember the Alamo”
• 5,000 Texans served in U.S. forces– Many were Texas Rangers – “Texas Devils”
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo• War ended with the signing of the Treaty of
Guadalupe Hidalgo– February 2, 1848
• Secured peace between the two countries• Texas was now part of the U.S. • Surrendered all land between Texas and the Pacific
Ocean• U.S. paid Mexico $15 million
