Hello Gents and Ladies
With this being my last message as Potentate I wanted to thank all of the people that have supported me this year. It is with your support that I can say we made progress this year on many fronts. Ahmed has been working hard to have a better plan for next year’s fundraising. That came together at our October Meeting in the Soo. We had good participation this year at our events and Ceremonials and in October had the most Nobles at a meeting in three years. That is something to celebrate. Ahmed is looking at opportunities to get stronger as a membership, as well as look to build a stronger financial future. We need some help from you, the Nobles. I would ask that you continue to have fun. I can say that the more fun you have wearing the shrine colors, the stronger the fraternity will be. We will find that things will get easier, if we are having fun together while wearing a shrine shirt, a fez, a unit
hat, driving a car in a parade, or just stopping in at an old friend’s house and saying hello. These things build a strong bond between people and show others that are not members, that there is a reason to be a Mason and a Shriner. The Philanthropy is not the only reason to be a Shriner. The rest is the fun and fellowship. We are a great group of men and we do provide support to 300+ kids across the Upper Peninsula but we can only continue to do this by growing or at least stabilizing our Membership. This needs to be the focus of you for the foreseeable future and having fun with other Masons and Shriners is an easy way to bring in new members. If you are having a good time, people around you want to have a good time, and will join our fraternity because they are having a good time. We have another exciting opportunity in 2019 it is our 125th year as a Shrine Temple. That is a huge milestone that we will be looking to celebrate. Keep your eyes and ears open for more information on that celebration.

Lastly I want to thank R. Thomas Peters for his years of service. He has decided that 2018 was his last year as Recorder. He has helped drive this ship for a long time. Without his guidance and leadership I would not be the man that I am today (I might have a healthier liver) and I personally want to thank him for my growth as a human being and leader. I look forward to seeing you all at Noble Appreciation Night and the Christmas Party. Good Luck and thanks for a great year!

Congratulations to our 2018 Shriner of the Year. The name is not available at this writing but this is a significant honor and recognizes a lot of dedication and hard work for the Shrine. Kids hosted by Job’s Daughters, AHMED Annual Meeting, D. O. N. Meeting 4:00 p.m. Adult Activities – food, Christmas cheer, Carol singing, etc. – fun for all This will be my final Ahmedian article as your Recorder. I have had the privilege of being your Recorder since November 5, 1996. It has been a wonderful experience, challenging at times, but a great opportunity to work with our Nobles and working for our Shrine patients. I intend to be as active and supportive as I am able and look forward to continued good fellowship with the Nobles and Ladies of Ahmed. Ahmed has been an integral part of my life since I joined in 1955 – some 63 short years ago and hopefully it will continue for years to come. And so, friends, have a wonderful Holiday Season and a Happy New Year – 2019. Some thoughts for today: “ To succeed in life, you need three things: a wishbone, a backbone, and a Funny bone.” - Reba Mc Intyre “ My father didn’t tell me how to live; he lived and let me watch him do it.” - Clarence B. Kellan
“You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.” - Albert Einstein “My idea of Christmas whether old-fashioned or modern is very simple: “Loving others”. - Bob Hope IRISH BLESSING: May there always be work for your hands to do, May your purse always hold a coin or two. May the sun always shine on your windowpane, May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain. May the hand of a friend always be near you, May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.” And finally, from Mitch Albom’s – “Tuesdays with Morrie” “ So many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half asleep, even when they’re busy doing things they think are important. This is because they are chasing the wrong things.” “The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.” (Continued on Page 6)

God Bless America and God Bless the Shrine ! Yours in the sunshine of the Shrine ! - R. Tom Peters
Ladies and Nobles: Greetings from Escanaba, as we come into fall Ahmed Shrine is continuing to grow. We had our October meeting in Sault Ste. Marie on October 5, and had one of the best turn outs we’ve had for a stated meeting this year. We also raised a new noble, Steve Charles. Ahmed has been having a great year, but we still need to keep up the good work. As we gain new members, we need to keep our nobility engaged in what is going on in Ahmed. Recently, our nobility voted to hire Progressive Media Marketing to sell our circus ads for Ahmed. This is a good move for our Shrine, as we won’t need to worry about going to solicit ads. We are going to be trying this new approach and will see how things work out. I think it’s a great proposal, as we are only in a one-year contract, and in areas where the nobles have been
struggling to sell ads, we now have someone who will take care of selling for us. We do need to decide on what we are going to do for the circus going forward. Our contract with Carden Circus expires in 2020, and we will need to decide whether we want to continue with Carden, or seek a contract with a different circus. Obviously, the circus is our biggest fundraiser and creates great publicity for Ahmed, but we also need to decide on what we want to do with the circus going forward. Things continue to go well for Ahmed, let’s keep up the good work and keep Ahmed strong. - John Bergman

Greetings from Newberry. We set a record in October for the most Nobles at a regular meeting. It was a three year high for attendance part of our Fall Masonic Weekend in Sault Ste. Marie. It was a really nice weekend to catch up with friends and to meet new ones as well.
Congratulations to our new Noble Steve Charles who joined Ahmed Shrine during our Fall Masonic Weekend in Sault Ste. Marie. It was a truly international Shrine event with Nobles attending from Sault Ste. Marie Ontario as well. Very nice job to our Potentate for taking the meeting on the road and to Jeff
Marlatt for coordinating an outstanding weekend. Next we turn our thoughts to our Christmas Party, Annual Elections and Stated meeting on December 8th at the Upper Peninsula Masonic Center in Marquette.
Our Daughter Paige said she had a great time, and enjoyed the children activities, balloon animals and gifts. I hope you and your family take time to join us for some family fun during the Holiday Season starting at 11am. Warm Regards in the Sunshine of Ahmed Shrine,

IMPERIAL SHRINE NEWS
Every year, Shriners Hospitals for Children selects two National Patient Ambassadors to represent the health care system’s patients. The ambassadors spend the year sharing their stories of perseverance in the face of adversity and the ways Shriners Hospitals for Children has made a dramatic, life-changing difference in their lives. Introducing our two new ambassadors:
Riley, now age 17, was born with
hereditary multiple exostoses (HME), a genetic condition that causes irregular bone growth. Exostoses are more commonly known as “bone spurs,” which typically grow on the end of long bones during childhood and adolescence. In Riley’s case, physicians discovered growths from nearly head to toe through a full body X-ray when he was only 15 months old. Shortly thereafter, he became a patient of Shriners Hospitals for
Children. Over time, Alfred V. Hess, M.D., the hospital’s director of hand surgery, and Shriners Hospitals for Children — Tampa’s Chief of Staff Maureen Maciel, M.D., have performed more than a dozen surgeries to remove growths and lengthen bones in Riley’s arms and legs. Riley has been a very active patient ambassador for the Tampa Shriners Hospital for several years. He also mentors Theodore, another child with the same rare condition, which Riley said is “one of the best things that happened to me this year.” Theodore’s mom said that meeting Riley and his family gave them hope. Riley’s family also supports a golf tournament organized by Riley’s dad’s former employer. Since 2002, the C&W Charity Golf Classic has raised more than $500,000 to benefit the Tampa Shriners Hospital. Riley is looking forward to the opportunity to share his story and help others as a National Patient Ambassador. He intends to remain part of the Shriners family.
Lily, age 18, from Paducah,
Kentucky, was born with fibular hemimelia, meaning she did not have a fibula, the outer thin bone that runs from the knee to the ankle, in her right leg. (Continued on Page 9)
Page 9
She underwent a Syme’s amputation, which is an amputation done through the ankle joint that helps to preserve the heel pad, and she received her first prosthesis a few months later. When Lily was 18 months old, she became a patient of Vishwas Talwalkar, M.D., pediatric orthopaedic surgeon at Shriners Hospitals for Children Medical Center — Lexington. Over the years, Lily has undergone five surgeries there to straighten her remaining right leg and has received more prosthetic limbs than she can count. Lily recently completed her freshman year at the University of Kentucky. Because of the care she received at Lexington Shriners Medical Center, she has chosen to study nursing, and minor in music. “I hope to be a nurse at Shriners Hospital after graduating,” said Lily. “It is my dream to help provide the same care I received all my life to others as a way to show my gratitude for the Shriners health care system. “Shriners Hospitals for Children has helped me to not see my leg as a handicap, and instead to look at it as a challenge,” she said. “Because of Shriners Medical Center, I wake up every morning thankful for two legs instead of regretting that I only have one.”
Lily is excited about being a National Patient Ambassador. “Somewhere out there is at least one person who needs to hear what I have to say.”
Above, our much-loved patient Ambassadors; Kechi, who sang the national anthem, Alec, who led the Walk for LOVE, and Team Theodore from the Tampa Shriners Hospital, who was back again this year with his entire family for the Walk, Ride or Drive for LOVE event at day one of Imperial Session.
