Descúbrelo a tan sólo
Legend has it, that in Mineral de Pozos, a place that was named National Historic Treasure in 1982, and Magical Town in
2012, there existed more mines than anywhere else in the world, and that only a few had been exploited. The beautiful
colonial façades located in the historical center, the mine ruins, and haciendas that give this land the mysterious appeal of
a Ghost Town, are all witnesses of this bonanza. It is located only three and a half hours from Mexico City, and 45 minutes
away from Queretaro and San Miguel de Allende.
Our amazement began as soon as we arrived to the El Secreto de los Pozos hotel, which is also known as Galería 6. Here
you begin by immersing yourself through a series of passageways that, like a maze, lead you to spectacular gardens and
end in welcoming rooms; quiet, comfortable, and romantic rooms with bathtubs and fireplaces.

Once you have made yourself at home, you should walk
through the town’s little cobblestone streets. Start your visit
in the Main Plaza, it has a beautiful hexagonal kiosk where at
the back you can find the San Pedro Parish, which dates back
to the 18th century. At a distance, you can see the unfinished
San Antonio of Padua Chapel, as well as the small-sized Mercy
Chapel with its contours and baroque detailing.
You can wander around the stores and galleries where
some of the best work of different artists can be found. We
recommend you have lunch at the La Pila Seca restaurant,
located in front of the Main Plaza. Here you can enjoy
delicious Mexican cuisine. For a refreshment, try the
Coriander Margarita.

The best time of day to head to the Ghost Area is in the
afternoon, at about 17:00 hours; when the sun has gone
down a bit and it illuminates the ruins in an almost mystical
way. To make your visit safer and more interesting, we
recommend you look for Marco Sánchez, an experienced
and qualified guide.

The archeological area welcomes visitors with the Model
School, a school from the Porfirio era of the 19th century,
along with the old Aqueduct, and the once mining Hacienda
named The Triangle. This last one can only be seen from
afar, no tourists are allowed inside. Our guide informed us
that the mining climax of this region occurred between the
16th century and the 19th century, when it was completely
abandoned. Some say it was due to over exploitation, and
others say it was due to the Cristero war.
Our first stop was at The Five Men Mine, one of the
largest of the area where you can still see extremely
deep underground mines. When this majestic compound
surrounds you, one cannot help but imagine the riches
that were once produced here, and the get a glimpse of
the beautiful view these Five Men, after whom the mine
was named, enjoyed.

Our last stop was in the shell of the first mine that was
discovered by the Spaniards, the Santa Brígida Hacienda.
This mine was abundant in gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc,
and mercury. The three chacuacos or chimneys where the
metal was melted are still intact. These chimneys are
now unmistakable landmarks of Mineral de los Pozos. We
returned to town feeling tired, it was a perfect moment
to go and enjoy some tasty chiles rellenos (stuffed chili) in
the Posada de las Minas restaurant.
