Dear Reader,
Minnesota is faced with a STEM workforce conundrum: Students need experience to get a job, but need a job to get experience. Meanwhile, small companies across the state are struggling to fi nd ways to connect to the emerging talent they need to help their businesses grow.
Part of the solution: Internships; helping to bridge the gap from classroom to career while pro-viding employers with opportunities to build their talent pipeline.
Minnesota will have roughly 450,000 high-tech jobs by 2026. To help fi ll these positions, the SciTechsperience Internship Program was started in 2012 to address the state's STEM workforce challenge. Since it began, SciTechsperience has connected more than 1250 STEM interns to paid internships in small and growing Minnesota companies. These high quality internships provide opportunities for students to solve real-world challenges and receive the kind of hands-on experience that will help launch their professional careers right here in Minnesota.
The Minnesota High Tech Association (MHTA) serves as the steward of the SciTechsperience program. MHTA submits an annual report to Minnesota's Governor, Legislature and Depart-ment of Employment and Economic Development, summarizing the internship program's outcomes for the preceding program year. This 2018 report includes information about student and business applicants, placement highlights, return on investment, and the program's long-term impact.
To help meet continued demand for SciTechsperience, the Minnesota legislature appropriated $2.7 million in funding to support 650 STEM internships over the 2018-2019 biennium.
Moving forward, MHTA hopes to continue to build on the success of the SciTechsperience Internship Program by providing more STEM students with dynamic internship experiences, supporting the talent pipeline for small and growing companies, and dramatically improving the economic outlook for companies and families across Minnesota.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 2018 PROGRAM YEAR
SciTechsperience connects college students pursuing STEM degrees with paid internship opportunities in small, for-profi t Minnesota companies.
Qualifi ed companies receive a wage match to help cover 50 percent of the intern’s wages. The match is capped at $2,500.
Who's eligible?
Students:• A Minnesota resident or student attending college
in Minnesota, and 18 years of age or older;• In good academic standing (2.50+ GPA);• A technical or community college student (halfway
through their program) or • A college junior or senior (60 credits completed) or• A graduate student• Enrolled in an accredited U.S. college and pursuing
a qualifying science, technology, engineering or math degree;
• Eligible to work off campus in the United States

Placements:368 students were placed in intern-ships in 2018, an increase of 26% over 2017. More than 1250 students have been placed in STEM internships since SciTechsperience began in 2012.
Diversity:55% of student applicants and 42% of interns hired were students underrepresented in STEM (women or students of color) in 2018.
Return on Investment (ROI):SciTechsperience is a successful public/private partnership with a positive return on investment. For every $1.00 invested by the state in wage matches, $2.87 was paid in wages to interns by private companies.

With unemployment rates at near historic lows, employers are working harder than ever to attract and retain talent – especially in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fi elds. In response, Minnesota's Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) invests in programs that connect workers and employers. The SciTechsperience Internship Program is a shining example of a successful DEED-funded program that has been develop-ing Minnesota's STEM workforce since 2012.
The Minnesota High Tech Association is the home of SciTechsperience, the program that exists to build and retain Minnesota's STEM workforce. By connecting small and grow-ing businesses with the talent they need, providing college STEM majors with the industry experience they desire, and building Minnesota's STEM pipeline, SciTechsperience is a proven smart workforce investment.
In order for Minnesota to fi ll its growing high tech labor mar-ket, it must cultivate a workforce that is fueled by meaningful experiences that prepare students to hit the ground running after graduation. SciTechsperience does just that, strength-ening Minnesota's STEM workforce one internship at a time.
Where do the student
applicants come from?Based their permanent address, 40% of applicants hail from sub-urbs in the 7-county metro area, 28% are from Greater Minnesota, 22% are from Minneapolis and St. Paul, and 11% are out of state residents who attend college in Minnesota.

SciTechsperience each year?The number of applicants has continued to increase. In 2018, 1,642 students applied, which was an increase of 11% over 2017.
Where do student applicants
attend college?All over the country –112 schools to be exact. Thirty-nine percent came from the University of Minnesota system, 32% from 2- and 4-year schools in the Minnesota State system, 17% from Minnesota Private Colleges, and 11% from colleges out of state. industry sector?
While the number of applicants increased, the distribution of applicants by industry sector showed little change from 2017 to 2018. The IT/Computer Technology sector led the way with ninety-eight applicants, which was 30% of all applications. The man-ufacturing sector had 83 applicants, which was just over 25%.

Ask any nonprofi t organization and they’ll tell you that tracking program participants long term is a challenge. The same is true with tracking interns after they graduate from college.
One tool that gives us some insight on where people are now is LinkedIn. Using professional pro-fi les posted on the site, we were able to fi nd 74% of SciTech-sperience interns hired between 2012-2016 to see where they are now. Here’s what we learned:
