MODEL 201B CONTINUOUS GAS ANALYZER
IntroductionThe Model 201-B PID is a flexible andversatile Analyzer. More than three thousandof these photoionization detector (PID) basedAnalyzers have been sold worldwide forapplications ranging from carbon bedbreakthrough, leak detection to stack andambient air monitoring. This is attributed tothe rugged and durable design that ischaracteristic of all PID Analyzers products.
Several years ago, we added the flameionization detector (FID) to the 201 seriesproduct line. Other continuous Analyzersin the 200 series include the Model 202Infrared (IR),the Model 201B fixedwavelength UV-Near IR Photometer, athermal conductivity detector (TCD), Model204 and a Model 210 ParamagneticOxygen Analyzer. The addition of these newAnalyzers greatly improves the capabilityand range of process analyzers from PID.
PID-descriptionThe process of photoionization is initiatedby the absorp-tion of a photon of ultravioletradiation energetic enough to ionize amolecule (RH) by the process shown below:
RH + hυ ⇒ RH+ + e-where hυ represents a photon with anenergy ≥ the ionization potential of speciesRH. The ions are collected in an ionizationchamber which is adjacent to the lamp andcontains an accelerating electrode (biasedpositively) and a collection electrode wherethe current is measured. After amplification, the current measured is proportional toconcentration. The response measured willbe a summation (total) of the hydrocarbonsionized.
FID DescriptionIn the FID, the sample is burned in ahydrogen-air flame and the ions formed fromcarbon containing compounds are collectedby applying a positive potential to the jet andmeasuring the current at collection electrodejust above the flame. After amplification, thecurrent measured is proportional to concentration.

Sampling SystemsOne of the most difficult challenges is todeliver a sample stream saturated with waterat an elevated temperature to the analyzerwithout any change in the composition ofthe VOC’s or other compounds to bemeasured. A photo of our sampleconditioning system is shown below. Foradditional information, please contact PIDAnalyzers. The system below requires only compressedair for operation and removes all liquid waterfrom the sample. It can be used in a Class IDiv 1 area.We also offer heat exchangersand heated sample lines for other types ofsamples.
IntroductionThe Model 201 B UV-NIRAbsorbance Analyzer is a flexibleand versatile non dispersive (ND)Spectroscopic Analyzer. The designis based on ultra stable lamps withsingle or dual beam optical benches,a detachable sample cell, aphotodiode detector and very stableelectronics. This Analyzer has a widedynamic range (from ppb to > percentlevels). This rugged and durabledesign is characteristic of all PIDAnalyzers products.
Principle of Operation
The technique for measuring theconcentration depends upon theLambert Beer Law:
I = Io e-kx
Where- I is the measuredintensity, Io is the incident intensity, k isthe absorption coefficient, and x is thepathlength
The instrument consists of a UVsource, a fixed path length cell (can bevaried for the application), aninterference filter and an UV detector. This instrument operates in the nearUV to near IR region (200-1,500 nm).The types of electronic transitions inthis region are electronic and fororganic molecules involve sigmaelectrons (unsaturated compounds). The types of electrons are found inC=C (PI-PI* transitions ) or C=O (N-PI* transitions) in organic compounds.
Features-The LED meter displays threeparameters (concentration (ppb/ppm/%) , temperature, and pressure) andwill provide an output for a singleparameter.
Easy to operate- In the eventof a power outage, theinstrument willautomatically restart

DataWorks
Data Works is PIDs data collection and loggingsoftware that can be used with a wide variety ofSensor or Analyzer outputs such as Ethernet,RS485 & 4-20 mA . The latter two outputs are forlong distance transmission of data as shown inTable I below. In-plant installations are typically 4-20 mA or RS485 because of the long distancesinvolved 1,000-5,000’.
The software is written in visual C++ as an overlay/interface for various hardwaredevices. One hardwareversion used for our Model 201-B, 202, 203, 204,210, 301B GC, 501 B GC or other manufacturer’sinstruments that have 4-20 mA outputs or an RS485output. There is a 12 bit ADC on board with 16digital input/outputs. The latter can be used tocontrol calibration, diagnostics for the PID Analyzersunits. Low and high alarm levels and concentrationrange can be set in the PC.
Each day at midnight, a new CSV or textfile is created and named (by date). Thesefiles can be directly imported into EXCEL.The 4-20 mA output from multiple PID Analyzersinstrumentscan be networked as shown below.
Multipoint Sequencer
The 201-B has several mulipoint options The firstis a simple 2 point system that can be used tomonitor the input and output of a scrubber, car-bon bed etc. to determine the efficiency of thesystem. This 201-B has a two channel display;one for each channel.
The second option is a 4, 8, 12, 16, 24 or 32point system. This system employs a manifoldwith a needle valve and a 3 way valve for eachchannel. This version has a three channel dis-play. One channel is for for the concentration, the second is for the channel # and the third isfor the sampe flow for that channel. The flow ismeasured with a mass flow sensor. The setpointfor the flow channel can be set to indicate a lowflow or blockage for a channel. An alarm can beprogrammed for each channel in the system. thissystem provides an inexpensive alternative to asensor for each point. The cost of maintainingand/or calibrating this single system is consid-erably less expensive than maintaining a 16 or24 sensor system.
The multipoint system can be interfaced withDataWorks, a PLC or DCS system that is al-ready at the Plant. Contact PID for additionalinformation on in this area.
