1)â ChecksâtoâtheâareaâPriorâtoâbeginningâworkâonâsystemsâcontainingâflammableârefrigerants,âsafetyâchecksâareânecessaryâtoâensureâthatâtheâriskâofâignitionâisâminimised.âForârepairâtoâtheârefrigeratingâsystem,âtheâfollowingâprecautionsâshallâbeâcompliedâwithâpriorâtoâconductingâworkâonâtheâsystem.
2)â Workâprocedure
Workâshallâbeâundertakenâunderâaâcontrolledâprocedureâsoâasâtoâminimiseâtheâriskâofâaâflammableâgasâorâvapourâbeingâpresentâwhileâtheâworkâisâbeingâperformed.
3)â Generalâworkâarea
Allâmaintenanceâstaffâandâothersâworkingâinâtheâlocalâareaâshallâbeâinstructedâonâtheânatureâofâworkâbeingâcarriedâout.âWorkâinâconfinedâspacesâshallâbeâavoided.âTheâareaâaroundâtheâworkspaceâshallâbeâsectionedâoff.âEnsureâthatâtheâconditionsâwithinâtheâareaâhaveâbeenâmadeâsafeâbyâcontrolâofâflammableâmaterial.
4)â Checkingâforâpresenceâofârefrigerant
Theâareaâshallâbeâcheckedâwithâanâappropriateârefrigerantâdetectorâpriorâtoâandâduringâwork,âtoâensureâtheâtechnicianâisâawareâofâpotentiallyâflammableâatmospheres.âEnsureâthatâtheâleakâdetectionâequipmentâbeingâusedâisâsuitableâforâuseâwithâflammableârefrigerants,âi.e.ânon-sparking,âadequatelyâsealedâorâintrinsicallyâsafe.
5)â Presenceâofâfireâextinguisher
Ifâ anyâ hotâ workâ isâ toâ beâ conductedâ onâ theâ refrigerationâ equipmentâ orâ anyâ associatedâ parts,â appropriateâ fireâextinguishingâequipmentâshallâbeâavailableâtoâhand.âHaveâaâdryâpowderâorâCO2âfireâextinguisherâadjacentâtoâtheâcharging areaďż˝

6)â Noâignitionâsources
Noâpersonâ carryingâoutâworkâ inâ relationâ toâ aâ refrigerationâ systemâwhichâ involvesâexposingâanyâpipeâworkâ thatâcontainsâorâhasâcontainedâflammableârefrigerantâshallâuseâanyâsourcesâofâignitionâinâsuchâaâmannerâthatâitâmayâleadâtoâtheâriskâofâfireâorâexplosion.âAllâpossibleâignitionâsources,âincludingâcigaretteâsmoking,âshouldâbeâkeptâsufficientlyâfarâawayâfromâtheâsiteâofâ installation,ârepairing,âremovingâandâdisposal,âduringâwhichâflammableârefrigerantâcanâpossiblyâbeâreleasedâtoâtheâsurroundingâspace.âPriorâtoâworkâtakingâplace,âtheâareaâaroundâtheâequipmentâisâtoâbeâsurveyedâtoâmakeâsureâthatâthereâareânoâflammableâhazardsâorâignitionârisks.âNoâSmokingâsignsâshallâbeâdisplayed.
7)â Ventilated area
Ensureâthatâtheâareaâisâinâtheâopenâorâthatâitâisâadequatelyâventilatedâbeforeâbreakingâintoâtheâsystemâorâconductingâanyâhotâwork.âAâdegreeâofâventilationâshallâcontinueâduringâtheâperiodâthatâtheâworkâisâcarriedâout.âTheâventilationâshouldâsafelyâdisperseâanyâreleasedârefrigerantâandâpreferablyâexpelâitâexternallyâintoâtheâatmosphere.
8)â Checksâtoâtheârefrigerationâequipment
Whereâelectricalâcomponentsâareâbeingâchanged,âtheyâshallâbeâfitâforâtheâpurposeâandâtoâtheâcorrectâspecification.âAtâ allâ timesâ theâmanufacturerâsâmaintenanceâ andâ serviceâ guidelinesâ shallâ beâ followed.â Ifâ inâ doubtâ consultâ theâmanufacturerâsâtechnicalâdepartmentâforâassistance.âTheâfollowingâchecksâshallâbeâappliedâtoâinstallationsâusingâflammableârefrigerants:
Theâchargeâsizeâisâinâaccordanceâwithâtheâroomâsizeâwithinâwhichâtheârefrigerantâcontainingâpartsâareâinstalled;â
Theâventilationâmachineryâandâoutletsâareâoperatingâadequatelyâandâareânotâobstructed;
Ifâanâindirectârefrigeratingâcircuitâisâbeingâused,âtheâsecondaryâcircuitâshallâbeâcheckedâforâtheâpresenceâofârefrigerant;âMarkingâtoâtheâequipmentâcontinuesâtoâbeâvisibleâandâlegible.âMarkingsâandâsignsâthatâareâillegibleâshallâbeâcorrected;
Refrigerationâpipeâorâcomponentsâareâinstalledâinâaâpositionâwhereâtheyâareâunlikelyâtoâbeâexposedâtoâanyâsubstanceâwhichâmayâcorrodeârefrigerantâcontainingâcomponents,âunlessâtheâcomponentsâareâconstructedâofâmaterialsâwhichâareâinherentlyâresistantâtoâbeingâcorrodedâorâareâsuitablyâprotectedâagainstâbeingâsoâcorroded.
9)â Checksâtoâelectricalâdevices
Repairâandâmaintenanceâtoâelectricalâcomponentsâshallâ includeâ initialâsafetyâchecksâandâcomponentâ inspectionâprocedures.â Ifâaâ faultâexistsâ thatâcouldâcompromiseâsafety,â thenânoâelectricalâsupplyâshallâbeâconnectedâ toâ theâcircuitâuntilâitâisâsatisfactorilyâdealtâwith.âIfâtheâfaultâcannotâbeâcorrectedâimmediatelyâbutâitâisânecessaryâtoâcontinueâoperation,âanâadequateâtemporaryâsolutionâshallâbeâused.âThisâshallâbeâreportedâtoâtheâownerâofâtheâequipmentâsoâallâpartiesâareâadvised.
Initialâsafetyâchecksâshallâinclude:
Thatâcapacitorsâareâdischarged:âthisâshallâbeâdoneâinâaâsafeâmannerâtoâavoidâpossibilityâofâsparking;
Thatâthereânoâliveâelectricalâcomponentsâandâwiringâareâexposedâwhileâcharging,ârecoveringâorâpurgingâtheâsystem;âThatâthereâisâcontinuityâofâearthâbonding.
7.� Repairs�to�sealed�components
1)â Duringârepairsâ toâsealedâcomponents,âallâelectricalâsuppliesâshallâbeâdisconnectedâ fromâtheâequipmentâbeingâworkedâuponâpriorâ toâanyâremovalâofâsealedâcovers,âetc.â Ifâ itâ isâabsolutelyânecessaryâtoâhaveâanâelectricalâsupplyâtoâequipmentâduringâservicing,âthenâaâpermanentlyâoperatingâformâofâleakâdetectionâshallâbeâlocatedâatâtheâmostâcriticalâpointâtoâwarnâofâaâpotentiallyâhazardousâsituation.
2)â Particularâattentionâshallâbeâpaidâtoâtheâfollowingâtoâensureâthatâbyâworkingâonâelectricalâcomponents,âtheâcasingâisânotâalteredâinâsuchâaâwayâthatâtheâlevelâofâprotectionâisâaffected.âThisâshallâincludeâdamageâtoâcables,âexcessiveânumberâofâconnections,âterminalsânotâmadeâtoâoriginalâspecification,âdamageâtoâseals,âincorrectâfittingâofâglands,âetc.âEnsureâthatâapparatusâisâmountedâsecurely.âEnsureâthatâsealsâorâsealingâmaterialsâhaveânotâdegradedâsuchâ thatâ theyânoâ longerâserveâ theâpurposeâofâpreventingâ theâ ingressâofâflammableâatmospheres.âReplacementâpartsâshallâbeâinâaccordanceâwithâtheâmanufacturerâsâspecifications.

8.� Repair�to�intrinsically�safe�components
Doânotâapplyâanyâpermanentâinductiveâorâcapacitanceâloadsâtoâtheâcircuitâwithoutâensuringâthatâthisâwillânotâexceedâtheâpermissibleâvoltageâandâcurrentâpermittedâforâtheâequipmentâinâuse.âIntrinsicallyâsafeâcomponentsâareâtheâonlyâtypesâthatâcanâbeâworkedâonâwhileâliveâinâtheâpresenceâofâaâflammableâatmosphere.âTheâtestâapparatusâshallâbeâatâtheâcorrectârating.âReplaceâcomponentsâonlyâwithâpartsâspecifiedâbyâtheâmanufacturer.âOtherâpartsâmayâresultâinâtheâignitionâofârefrigerantâinâtheâatmosphereâfromâaâleak.
9.ďż˝ Cabling
Checkâthatâcablingâwillânotâbeâsubjectâtoâwear,âcorrosion,âexcessiveâpressure,âvibration,âsharpâedgesâorâanyâotherâadverseâenvironmentalâeffects.âTheâcheckâshallâalsoâtakeâintoâaccountâtheâeffectsâofâagingâorâcontinualâvibrationâfromâsourcesâsuchâasâcompressorsâorâfans.
10.� Detection�of�flammable�refrigerants
Underânoâcircumstancesâshallâpotentialâsourcesâofâignitionâbeâusedâinâtheâsearchingâforâorâdetectionâofârefrigerantâleaks.âAâhalideâtorchâ(orâanyâotherâdetectorâusingâaânakedâflame)âshallânotâbeâused.
11.� Leak�detection�methods

f)â Productâwhichâhasâbeenâinstalledâinâaâportableâorâmobileâbuilding,âstructureâorâapplicationâincluding,âbutânotâlimitedâto,âaâcaravan,âboatâorâtrailer;
