Your child needs to be able to trace and write numbers to do these worksheets.
SO WHY USE PATTERNS TO COUNT MONEY?
Remembering your times tables is much harder than learning a number pattern. There is more rhythm in counting 10 20 30 40 rather than 1x10 = 10 2x 10 = 20.
As adults we tend to sort the money in our wallets to make it easier for us to find and easier to count. Counting money by number patterns is something that we doeveryday automatically.
Some kids can remember the pattern but can’t get the timing right. Their hands seemto move faster than they say the numbers, so they get it wrong, or they know the answer but get lost in saying the words.
Practicing writing the number patterns within the boxes provided helps slow themdown. So rather than just rattling off the entire sequence of numbers you can work out when to stop based on how many you need.

SECTION 1
It is recommended that your child complete this section first.
The aim of this section is to ensure that your child knows the number patterns that are used to complete the worksheets in Section 2.
Children often find it difficult to focus their attention on learning both concepts at the same time, so it is important that Section 1 be completed first.
Number patterns such as counting by 1’s and 10’s are the easiest to learn as they build on previously learnt concepts. Have your child say the number pattern as they write it. Always start with the tracing sheets as they help establish the rhythm and structureof what your child needs to do in further sheets.
A lot of children have difficulty starting the number pattern, but once they get into a rhythm they can complete it. The sheets which require you to fill in the missing numbers are ‘backwards chained’ to help your child know what to do.

SECTION 2
It is recommended that your child complete Section 1 first.
The aim of this Section is to practice counting the coins using the number patterns.
If your child knows certain number patterns , but not others it is ok to just practice those sheets within Section 2. It is very important that they know the number patterns before they start these sheets so that we are not asking to do a task that is too difficult.
E.g. If your child can count by 10’s but not 5’s, 20’s or 50’s - they can complete all the 10 cent sheets.
To help with the transition from Section 1 to Section 2, the number patterns are written above the coins in the first sheet for eachcoin.
If your child is struggling with the number patterns, refer to the tips for explaining what to do in the beginning of the workbook.
