MORRIS CHAPEL UMC Chapel Echoes Newsletter July 6, 2015
A Message from Nicole Johnson
“The way we live our lives is our worship onto God.”
“Worship is our response to God’s extravagant grace.”
The first quote was written a decade ago for my very first sermon. The second quote was one that I
heard in a sermon given by the senior pastor of a church I had attended while in college. I share those
quotes because I’m thinking a lot about worship this week. We had Dr. Steve Rainey talk about being
awed and what it meant to praise God at our services on July 05. We praised God for the upcoming
youth mission trips and the number of youth and young adults who have decided to participate. Two
weeks ago we had Vacation Bible School and a lot of praising God for the children whose lives were
touched. The Gethsemane Vision Team, I think, is praising God for the opportunity to journey through a
visioning process for Morris Chapel North.
There are many obvious things we are praising God for and offering to God as worship. On the other
hand, our church is going through changes. We are growing, trying new things and continuing to do
old things. There are new faces and old faces. In the middle of it all, how are we worshipping God as a
community? Do we see God’s extravagant grace?
I see God’s extravagant grace in the people who are being drawn to worship as a part of the Morris
Chapel UMC family. Everyone coming together to worship here, in this space, has a story. Each person
is on a journey of faith. There are those who have come to bring their children here because Morris
Chapel is a safe space to learn about God. There are those whose families have been here since the
beginning. Still, there are others who came once and decided Morris Chapel UMC was an interesting
place to be. There are many other reasons, I am sure. One of the ways we can worship, we can re-
spond to God’s extravagant grace is continuing to make space for everyone willing to come. In mak-
ing space, we acknowledge that we have different stories and reasons for being here. We also
acknowledge that God’s grace is for everyone. This week let us worship as a community by reaching
out to someone we don’t know or have been meaning to connect with and haven’t had time. Say
hello. Find out someone’s name. Have coffee with someone. Invite someone to your Sunday School
class. Ask someone, how is it with your soul this week.
Romans 12:1 - Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as
a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true and proper worship.

Miscellaneous
Anyone wishing to participate in worship by presenting a vocal or instrumental solo or small ensemble piece in the
coming weeks/months at one or more of the worship services, please contact Del—others are always encouraged
to participate/lead musically in worship, even if unable to commit to a group that meets regularly. I am happy to
help you with music, practice, accompaniment tracks, etc. The “Gathering Music” time before the 1100 service is
a particularly excellent opportunity for young musicians to participate in leading worship in a relatively low-stress
