LEELANAU
LeelanauInside
Leelanau vacations are woven of beach days beside sparkling blue waters, paddling trips on the lovely, shallow Crystal River, browsing the picturesque shanty-boutiques of Leland’s Fishtown and exploring the tawny, undulating miles of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Climb to the top of the historic Grand Traverse Lighthouse to take in a shimmering expanse of Lake Michigan, go charter fishing and reel in a king salmon on that same big blue lake, or hop aboard the ferry trip to explore the uninhabited North and South Manitou Islands. So many choices … but there are more: Over 25 wine tasting rooms beg to be sampled, roadside stands roll out seasonal fruits, beach bonfires wait to be lit, and marshmallows want roasting while the sun sets. And let’s talk restaurants—intimate eateries where the vibe is casual but the food is fine enough to be called out by celebrity chef Mario Batali, a summer resident here.
A Leelanau vacation is a memory postcard that is rewritten every new day. Read on to find out how to make your own unforgettable moments.

Close to amenities, these pretty oases are especially great for families:Northport: Sweet Haserot Park beach, just steps from downtown on the calm waters of Northport Bay, sets you up for the perfect beach day.
Omena: This sandy little gem on Lake Michigan’s darling Omena Bay is just past where M22 makes a sharp curve in tiny downtown Omena. Provisions, dining and wine tasting nearby. On Omena Point Road.
Suttons Bay: The shallows of West Grand Traverse Bay at Suttons Bay’s Marina Park are outfitted with a playground, picnic tables and grills. Ice cream, groceries, shops and restaurants are close at hand. On Front Street just off the downtown.
Lake Leelanau: This road-end beach on Lake Leelanau a mile west of the village of Lake Leelanau is a pleasant place to spread a towel or head out for a paddle. The village has everything you need from gas, ice and groceries to Indian carry-out food at NJ’s Grocery. From the village, west on M204 about a mile, right on Popp Rd.
Leland: From beachy, bustling, amenity-filled Leland, follow Cedar St. (at Van’s Garage) west to Lake Michigan at road’s end. A short trail leads you to Hall Beach, a prime stretch of frontage that cozies up to the boutiques and eateries of Fishtown. The big lake too cold? Check out Nedow’s Bay beach on Lake Leelanau. Head north on M22, right on Pearl St. and take it to the end.
Glen Arbor: Three roads in this perfectly appointed Lake Michigan town lead to lovely slices of public beach—and unforgettable sunsets over Sleeping Bear Point and the Manitou Islands. Find Bay Road off M22 about a mile north of town. In town, both S. Lake (at the Lake Michigan boat launch) and S. Manitou streets lead to the beach. Parking is on the roads, or behind the township hall on Western Avenue (M22).
Empire: Two beaches here: A wide sandy beach where the Lake Michigan surf rolls in big and bold and, across the parking lot, warm, shallow South Bar Lake. Restrooms, playground, picnic tables and grills all add up to a heavenly beach day. Follow signs from downtown.

Leelanau State Park: A short hike in to this beach on Cathead Bay, at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula, might just yield the best secret you didn’t know about in Northern Michigan. The waters are Caribbean-clear and the beach is pristine. The rest of the park is a gem, too: 55 rustic campsites, 8.5 miles of hiking trails and the 1852-built Grand Traverse Lighthouse museum (more on page 12). You’ll need a pass ($11 annually per vehicle for Michigan residents; nonresidents, $8.40 per day). 15310
N. LIGHTHOUSE POINT RD., NORTHPORT, 231.386.5422.
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore: Thirty-five miles of pristine Lake Michigan mainland shoreline make this a mecca for beach worshippers. Check out these accesses to long, dreamy stretches of sand. Park entrance fees run from $5 to $20. For information on purchasing them: 231.326.4700, NPS.GOV/SLBE/PLANYOURVISIT/FEES.HTM.
North Bar: An inviting channel connects North Bar Lake to Lake Michigan at this popular beach, meaning you can do everything from shallow water splashing to body surfing here.
Glen Haven: One of Lake Michigan’s best destination beaches is located in this historic ghost town, on the sandy shoreline just past the Cannery Boat Museum. Too crowded? Turn left on M209 and pull over anywhere you see your beach desire. In a mile or so you’ll come to the Sleeping Bear Maritime Station (more on page 12); park there and roam the sandy shoreline of Sleeping Bear Point.
Little Glen Lake: Hot and sweaty after a walk up (and run down) the Sleeping Bear Dune Climb? A public beach on shallow, sandy-bottomed Little Glen is within sight, just south on M109.
Good Harbor and Shalda Creek: The gorgeous beaches of Lake Michigan’s Good Harbor Bay can be accessed off M22 at the ends of county roads 669 and 651. There’s superb sand here, but if you head left at the 669 beach you’ll come to where sweet, shallow Shalda Creek flows into Lake Michigan.

NorthportPerched at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula, Northport is one of the most energized towns on the peninsula, featuring a Music in the Park series on summer Friday evenings and boasting antiques shops, art galleries, cafes, a taproom, restau-rant/bowling alley, wine tasting room and more. Cinnamon buns at Barb’s Bakery, pulled pork at The Garage and the great wine-and-motorcycle theme at Motovino Cellars are just some of the things that make a Northport day.
OmenaThis teensy village at a bend in M22 has a million-dollar view of gorgeous Omena Bay, plus treasures like the historic Omena General Store, Tamarack Gallery and Leelanau Cellars’ stunning waterfront tasting room. You haven’t had the full Omena experience until you’ve taken a seat waterside at Knot Just a Bar.
Suttons Bay This town on West Grand Traverse Bay set a Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of canoes and kayaks in September of 2013. When they aren’t nudging their boats together, the citizens and summer folk of Suttons Bay are reveling in their beautiful 19th-century downtown snuggled
between the bustle of Traverse City and Leelanau County’s bucolic vineyard and orchard country. Stocked to its limits with restaurants, home décor shops and boutiques, Suttons Bay also boasts Bahle’s, a purveyor of upscale sportswear and one of the oldest businesses in Michigan. Cap off your Suttons Bay day with a movie at the 1920-built Bay Theatre.
Lake LeelanauStraddling the picturesque Lake Leelanau narrows—the thin channel connecting the lake’s north and south lobes—this quiet town is becoming a miniature masterpiece of flavors. Find The Boathouse wine tasting room, Bella Fortuna, an elegant and authentic Italian restaurant, the century-old Fountain Point resort, some of the region’s favorite wineries, Northern Latitudes Distillery (with tasting room!) and NJ’s, a grocery with a kitchen that churns out killer Indian take-out.
LelandWatch boats putt in and out of the harbor, charter a fishing trip, hop the ferry to the Manitou Islands, pick up a pretzel-bread sandwich at the Village Cheese Shanty in Fishtwown, sip a Chubby Mary (a bloody Mary with a smoked chub tucked in) at The Cove, taste at the Verterra Winery wine bar, treat yourself to cinnamon twists at The Bluebird Restaurant.

CedarCute shops help shape this town’s identity. But it’s the sausages at the renowned Pleva’s Meat Market, smoked meats (the mini-ham!) at Bunting’s Cedar Market and unexpectedly great tacos to-go at Cedar Sol Hydro Farm that give it flavor! The lively annual Polka Festival is held July 2 through 6 this year.
Maple CityA tiny, scenic town that got its start as a shoe-peg factory set amid a swath of maple timber. The village’s original name, “Pegtown Station,” lives on at the Pegtown Station restaurant, home to some of the best pizza and break-fasts around. Find great smoked meats here at Gabe’s Country Market, and pick your own blueberries and rasp-berries in season at Westover Market.
Glen Arbor A true resort town with a front row seat for sunsets over Lake Michigan’s Sleeping Bear Bay. The downtown is a lively scene, with galleries, boutiques, restaurants and souvenir shops. Put in for a day on Sleeping Bear Bay at the north end of S. Lake St., browse all things cherry at Cherry Republic, paddle the Crystal River, bike the Sleeping Bear Dunes Heritage Trail, listen to live music on the deck at Boondock’s, charter a fishing trip at Reel Tales Fishing Charters.
EmpireThis laid-back beach town is the southern gateway to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Hike the Empire Bluffs trail, find out what’s biting where at Empire Outdoors, get the surf report at Sleeping Bear Surf and Kayak, grab a burger and a beer at Joe’s Friendly Tavern and hit Grocer’s Daughter Chocolates, con-sidered among the best chocolatiers in the nation. All good things, but in this town, every day begins and ends at the stunning Empire beach.

This enclave of fishing shanties, smoke-houses and two fishing tugs strung out along the Leland River wharf at the Leland Harbor is a beloved piece of Great Lake’s history. Boutiques and eat-eries now fill many of the shanties, but charter fishing boats still bring in the catch. FISHTOWNMI.ORG.
The experience begins with the ferry trip on a Manitou Island Transit ferry across Lake Michigan’s Manitou Passage. The ferry to South Manitou runs daily in the summer, so you can daytrip or camp overnight on this beautiful island with its 19th-century lighthouse, ancient stand of virgin cedars known as the Valley of the Giants, and motorized tours of what was once a bustling pioneer community. Another South Manitou Island wonder is the wreck of the freighter the Francisco Morazan, visible just off the southwest shore.
Be prepared to camp if you are headed to North Manitou Island, because the ferry stops only once a day. Find miles of wooded and shoreline trails to hike, an inland lake and, near the ferry docks, a row of historic cottages—one is thought to be designed by Frank Lloyd Wright when he was a young, obscure architect.
Before you reach either island, know that you should be prepared for anything nature chooses to dish out—heat, thunder, lightning,
cold, mosquitoes and the (infrequent) possi-bility that you may have to stay longer than expected because seas are too rough for the ferry. Camping on both islands is primitive and by reservation: 877.444.677 OR ONLINE AT RECRE-

The Manitou Passage, with its twin Manitou Islands as a backdrop, is a picturesque spot to try your luck for chinook and coho salmon, steelhead, and lake and brown trout. Most charter fishing guides offer half-day and full-day trips for up to six people. Necessities: A cooler for your catch, proper clothing for the weather (it’s always chillier out on the water), and a fishing license. Charters out of Leland include Whitecap Charters (231.271.4524, CAPTJACKDUFFY.
