The2012tournamentwasnotassuccessfulfortheteam.Drawninaverydifficultgroup,theteamlostallthreefixtures,losing3-1toCroatiaintheopener(SeanStLedgerwiththegoal)beforegoingdown4-0toSpain(theeventualwinners)and2-0toItaly(thelosingfinalists.)

AninterestingfactfromthetwotournamentsisthattheRepublicofIreland’sgroupopponentshave,onbothoccasions,includedtheeventualfinalists.Ifthatistocontinuein2016,itmeansthattwoteamsfromItaly,SwedenandBelgiumwillhavetomakeittothefinal!

NorthernIreland’s2016qualificationrepresentsthefirsttimetheteamhasreachedthefinalsofaEuropeanChampionshiptournament,thoughtheycameagonizinglyclosetoqualificationforthe1984tournament.Intheirqualifyinggroup,theyinflictedtwo1-0winsoverWestGermanyandwereonlyeliminatedwhentheWestGermansidescoredwithtenminutestospareintheirfinalgroupgameagainstAlbania.

BeforequalificationwassecuredforEuro2016,arguablythegreatestfeatbyaNorthernIrishplayerinEuropeanChampionshipqualificationhistoryhadbeentherecordsetting13goalsscoredbyDavidHealyduringthecampaignforEuro2008,whichincludedtwohat-tricks,oneinafamous3-2victoryoverSpain.

In1932anobituaryappearedinanArmaghnewspaperreflectingonthelifeofahighlyrespectedlocalcitizenandbusinessman.Init,acertainWilliamMcCrumofMilfordwaslaudedasabrilliantscholar,storytellerandoutstandingsportsman.Nothingunusualaboutthatifithadnotcontainedareferencetothefactthatthedeceasedhadbeentheinspirationbehindoneofthemostmomentouschangestothelawsoffootball.ItwasWilliamMcCrumwho,in1890,submittedaproposalfor“apenaltykick”totheIrishFootballAssociation.TwelvemonthslateritwasapprovedbytheInternationalFootballAssociationBoardandincorporatedintheLawsoftheGame.McCrumcamefromahighlyrespectedfamily.TheonlysonofRobertGarmanyMcCrum,alinenbaronwhobuiltMilford,hewasaformerpupilatTheRoyalSchool,ArmaghandgraduatedfromTrinityCollege,Dublinin1886.Affectionatelyrememberedinthevillageas‘MasterWillie,’hewasasportsmanofinternationalrecognition.HewasinstrumentalinformingtheMilfordCricketClubdevotingmuchtimeandefforttocoaching.ThroughouthislifehealwaysmaintainedakeeninterestintheBoyScoutMovement.HewasalsospecificallyinterestedinamateurdramaticsandwasthedrivingforcebehindTheMilfordPlayers.WhentheR.G.McCrumInstitute–builtbyhisfathertoservicetherecreationalneedsofthevillage–openedin1914,hebecameactivelyinvolvedintherunningofit,encouragingallvillagerstotakepartinsomeorotherrecreation.Hewasabrilliantraconteurandauthorofsomeverymeritorioussketches.Asoneofthemanagingdirectorsofhisfather’slinenmanufacturingbusiness,McCrum,WatsonandMercer,herepresentedthecompany’sinterestsinLondonforanumberofyears.Hespentthebestpartofhislife,however,inMilford.TheobituaryonMcCrumpaintsapictureofapersonwhowasagentlemanfromheadtotoeandwhowasobviouslytiredofseeingfootballersresortingtoallkindsofillegalmethods.Thetrendbecameathorninhisfleshastheyearswentby.Infootball,onlytheballwasintendedtobekicked,nottheplayer.Anyonewhorefusedtorespectthisdeservedtobethreatenedwithadeterrentwhichwouldpunishnotonlytheoffenderbuthiswholeteamaswell.WilliamMcCrumwasnotadaydreamingzealotandadvocatorofold-fashionedideals.HewasagoalkeeperforMilford,asmallvillageclubthatplayedintheIrishChampionship’sfirstseasonin1890-91.AsagoalkeeperMcCrumhadeveryopportunitytowitnessthewayinwhichthepurityofsportwasbeingcorruptedbyfoulplay.Hehadfeltfirst-handtheeffectsofbreachesoftherulesandsimilarunsportingbehaviouronthefield.Thepenaltykick,ofcourse,isthekindofpenaltythatonlyagoalkeepercouldhaveinvented,asuprememomentofdramaandself-sacrificethatplacesthegoalkeeper,generallyabystander,atthecentreofthestage.Yes,itstackstheoddsagainstthegoalie,butitdoesmakehim,heroically,eventragicallythestaroftheshow.McCrum’sloveforthetheatreandtheatricalsmayhavepromptedhimtocomeupwiththeidea.HealsoheldaninfluentialpositionintheIrishFootballAssociationandhadaflairforadministrationandpolitics,withoutwhichhisrevolutionaryideawouldhardlyhavebeenimplemented.

O’LearysendstheRepublicofIrelandtotheWorldCupquarter-finalsAnotherwiseforgettable120minutesoffootballbetweentheRepublicofIrelandandRomaniaendedwithamomentofhighdrama,asDavidO’LearysteppedforwardtokicktheIrishteamintoaWorldCupquarter-finalclashwithhosts,Italy,inthe1990WorldCup.ThewinningpenaltywasprecededbyawonderfulsavebyIrishgoalkeeper,PackieBonner,whichmeantthatO’Leary’skickwouldprovedecisive.

Panenkawinsthe1976EuroFinalforCzechoslovakiaagainstWestGermanyCzechoslovakiaupsettheoddsbydefeatingthehighly-fanciedWestGermanteaminapenaltyshoot-outafterbothsideshadplayedouta2-2draw,withtheGermansscoringalastminuteequaliserinnormaltimetosendthegametoextratime.The1976tournamentwasthelastinwhichonlyfourteamscompetedatthetournamentfinals.Allfourgamesinthe1976tournamentwenttoextratime,theonlytimethathashappenedincompetitionhistory.
