INTRODUCTION
• Nanotechnology most active research areas• Used in medical field• Benefits energy sector• Benefits manufacturing sector• Concrete requires improvement-nano particles are
added
304/11/23 Dept of CE/SJCET
• Improves the materials bulk properties• Ability to control or manipulate materials at
the atomic scale• Obtains thinner final products • Cost effectiveness• Lowered levels of environmental
contamination
Why nanotechnology in Concrete?
404/11/23 Dept of CE/SJCET
What is nano concrete?
• A concrete made with Portland cement particles that are less than 500nm as a cementing agent
• Currently cement particle sizes range from a few nano-meters to a maximum of about 100 micro meters

NANO MATERIALS
• Carbon Nanotubes
• Nano-silica
• Titanium dioxide

CARBON NANO TUBES
• Molecular-scale tubes of graphitic carbon
• They can be several millimetres in length.
• They can be:- Single walled. Multi walled.

SINGLE WALLED CARBON NANO TUBES
804/11/23 Dept of CE/SJCET
MULTI WALLED CARBON NANO TUBES
904/11/23 Dept of CE/SJCET
PROPERTIES
• Highly flexible• Strongest material• Smaller diameters• Forms of carbon nanotubes:- Nano-horns Nano test-tubes Nano-fibres

PRODUCTION OF CARBON NANOTUBES
• Electric arc dischargePrinciple-based on the electric arc discharge
generated b/w the 2 graphite electrodes under an inert atm
Cobalt is added to graphite electrodes-produced SWNT

DISADVANTAGES
• Bundles are formed & entangled
• Sliding occurs
• Cost of adding CNT is high
1204/11/23 Dept of CE/SJCET
NANO SILICA
• Micro silica causes a disease-silicosis
• First nano product that replaced microsilica
• Made building,roadways,stairs,dams etc longlasting

NANO SILICA
1404/11/23 Dept of CE/SJCET
PROPERTIES
• High compressive strength concretes• Good workability• Fills up all the micro pores and micro spaces• Cement saving upto 35-45%• Preserves operators health• Lowered levels of contamination• Preserves cone shape in cone test
1504/11/23 Dept of CE/SJCET
PRODUCTION OF NANOSILICA
• Vaporization of silica
• By condensation
• By biological method-from California red worm
1604/11/23 Dept of CE/SJCET
TITANIUM DIOXIDE
• White pigment
• It oxidises oxygen or organic materials
• UV light activates its photocatalytic properties-destroys bacteria cell wall & membrane-causes death of bacteria
1704/11/23 Dept of CE/SJCET
Conti…• Used as photocatalyst in building materials
esp in Japan & Europe.• Due to photocatalytic action, whiteness of
building remains.
Titanium dioxide

BENEFITS OF NANO CONCRETE
• Cessation of contamination caused by micro silica solid particles
• Lower cost per building site• High compressive strength• Concrete with good workability• Cessation of super plasticizing utilization• Cessation of silicosis risk
1904/11/23 Dept of CE/SJCET
CONCLUSION
• Well dispersed nano particles increase the viscosity of the liquid phase, improves the segregation resistance and workability of the system
• Accelerates the hydration• Better bond between aggregates and cement
paste• Improves the shear, tensile strength and flexural
strength of concrete.2004/11/23 Dept of CE/SJCET
