PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I still can't believe that I am writing to members of the NCJW Rockland Section as your new president. For years so many of you have told me that someday I would become president and I kept saying, "No, not me!". Well, many of you are very persuasive, convincing, encouraging and inspiring so here I am as your president and really looking forward to the next two years. You have given me promises of help, support and guidance and together we will follow the NCJW mission and strive to improve the quality of life for women, children and families in the U.S. and Israel.

I want to thank everyone involved in the Installation Evening. Special thanks to Niki Plaut, Susan Steinfink and their wonderful committee for their expertise in organizing this fantastic evening, delicious dinner and making this evening so successful and meaningful. Also, a very special thanks to Sandy Platzman, the installing officer, for her gracious speech and welcoming to all the new and returning members of the Board. Our leader of humor and joy, Minna Kaufman, was a superb entertainer with her wonderful jokes and fascinating stories. Thanks to all of you!

Over the years I have been involved as chairperson and participant in many aspects of NCJW Rockland. As I look at the list I realize that I am well prepared for the presidency!

I was a Director, by choice, for many years

I have been co-vice president of membership with Minna Kaufman for several years

Each summer for the past five years I have arranged for 25 to 30 children to attend five local day camps for a month or two due to the generosity of these wonderful day camps

I have been chairperson of the annual Calendar Journal for several years

I was on the Nominating Committee for many years

I co-chaired Military Bridge with Marsha Milich for two years

I co-chaired the Antrim Theater fund raiser with Marsha Milich for three years

I chaired NCJW's participation in the JCC Jewish Film Festival for three years

I have been involved in the making of fleece blankets, teddy bears and sock puppets

I participate in Tales for Tots on the RCC campus on a weekly basis

I've also chaired Wash Your Troubles Away and Adopt a School

A very special thanks to Rochelle Welsh for guiding our section to a new high. She has introduced us and inspired us to move forward with many new ideas and into new areas that are so crucial to our future. She is a hard act to follow and I know will be there for me with my many, many questions.

The NCJW Rockland Section consists of many enthusiastic, professional and dedicated individuals. We are involved in advocacy on the local, state and national level. We have many fabulous ongoing and future activities planned. Our Annual Pool Party at the beautiful home of Marsha Forman is planned for July 27th. Edythe Carr has put together many interesting trips for the summer months. The pot luck lunch/book club has an updated list of stimulating and thought provoking books. Please read the bulletin for information about all these activities.

I am looking forward to working with all of you to continue the great efforts and successes of the National Council of Jewish Women Rockland Section.

Shalom, A Faith in the Future.

Where, Oh Where Can My Donations Go?

It’s been almost a year since NCJW Replay Thrift Store closed, and we continue to get inquiries from members, and the general public, about where they can donate clothing and furniture. NCJW continues to be committed to helping the community with new or gently used donated items.

Here are some ways you can donate items that you no longer need:

Clothing, Furniture and Small Household Items: These two organizations will pick up donations. - Vietnam Veterans, 1-800-775-VETS, or go to http://www.scheduleapickup.com/ to schedule a pickup online. - Purple Heart, 1-888-944-DROP, or go to http://www.purpleheartpickup.org/ to schedule a pickup online.

Furniture Some furniture items are accepted at the Center for Safety & Change (formerly the Rockland Family Shelter). Call Jessica or Jennifer at 845-634-3344 to find out if they accept your items and arrange a drop-off or pick-up.

Linens and Luggage If you have luggage, gently used towels, sheets, bedding, or small kitchen items, they are collected by NCJW--once a year in May or early June. We pack these and donate to the Center for Safety & Change shelter. Please hold until the next "Luggage for Freedom" packing meeting is announced by next year’s project chair, Karen Sherman.

Small Toys/Children’s Books We collect these for Busy Boxes which are given to children in emergency shelters. Contact Leslie Ratner, 845-356-0899. Larger children's books, new or gently used for all ages through teens, are collected by Janet Burton, 201-512-0485 for donation to the Special Victim’s Unit at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Toiletries Unused toiletries, especially sample sizes such as those from hotel rooms, are collected by Ilsa Spatz, 845-352-3055, for donation to Center for Safety and Change and Helping Hands for the Homeless. You can also drop off toiletries and small items directly at the Center for Safety and Change--Call 845-634-3344.

Camp Scholarships

The Single Working Parent Camp Scholarship Program of NCJW Rockland, in coordination with Big Brothers Big Sisters, was able to give 10 children partial scholarships toward tuition for camps in Rockland County this summer. Both children and working parents benefit greatly from this program!

Some children are repeat campers for multiple years. One mother writes: “Thank you for all the assistance you have given to both my son and myself throughout the past years. We are truly appreciative and will not forget or take lightly what you and your organization have done to help us in our time of need.”

High School Community Service Awards

For the 18th year, NCJW Rockland honored Rockland county graduating high school students with Community Service Awards. Selected out of a field of 10 applicants, three recipients of this year’s awards were recognized for their contributions to many different causes, ranging from operating a soup kitchen, supporting food and clothing drives for the homeless, tutoring, delivering meals to homebound seniors, preparing income tax forms for low income residents, and promoting interfaith harmony. This year, one recipient is from Nyack High School, and two are from North Rockland High School. Judy Gerstenhaber, H.S. Service Awards Chair, notes that these high school seniors have shown a commitment and dedication to improving lives for others locally and globally. Winners of the Community Service Award reflect the mission and values of NCJW Rockland with community service and advocacy projects experienced during their high school careers. In recognition of their exemplary contributions, each winner received a $1000 scholarship and an award certificate from NCJW Rockland. The 2015 award winners are: Levy Singleton of Nyack High School; Kory Borenkoff of North Rockland High School; and Jonathan Goncher of North Rockland High School. These three students exemplify all that is right with today’s youth, and NCJW Rockland is proud to recognize their efforts

PUBLIC AFFAIRS

Advance Health Equity #4 Immigrant Women and Families!

Although they are lawfully present (authorized to live and work in the US), many immigrants who contribute to our communities and economy face arbitrary and discriminatory barriers that put affordable health coverage out of reach.

Among the restrictions is a five-year waiting period before they can access affordable public and private health coverage programs such as Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and the health insurance marketplace. Women, who make up the majority of immigrants and who face other barriers to accessing the reproductive health care they need, are most harmed by such restrictions.

To correct this injustice, Rep. Michele Lujan-Grisham (D-NM) introduced the Health Equity and Access under the Law (HEAL) for Immigrant Women and Families Act (HR 1974). HR 1974 would restore coverage options for all lawfully present immigrants, allowing them to participate in the health programs their tax dollars support. It would also restore health coverage to those granted lawfully present status through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, and ensure that those who will gain new forms of administrative relief via a deferred action program in the future will not be similarly excluded from these key programs.

When I was at Leaders’ Retreat in May there was a great deal of emphasis by numerous sections that were very much involved with Policy Advocacy. We must remember that NCJW is a grass roots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideas into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms. Our organization supports fair pay, early child care and education, family-friendly workplaces, economic security, reproductive justice, human trafficking, domestic violence and gun control.

www.ncjw.org is a very informative website and we all can make a difference with social justice. I am looking forward to having our section being more informed concerning our advocacy policies.

We get letters, notes, messages, reminders, advance notices…

Campership Once again, many thanks to five local day camps for their generosity and support in providing a wonderful camping experience for about 25 to 30 children this summer. These camps, Blue Rill, Deer Mountain, Deerkill, Gate Hill and Ramaquois, allow these children to participate in a memorable camp experience for two, four, or eight week sessions. The comments I receive from parents and campers are so positive and rewarding. The camps are doing a true "mitzvah" in providing this enriching and exciting opportunity for so many children.

Tales for Tots Volunteers We have now been asked to bring Tales for Tots to the 700+ children in the kindergarten classrooms in East Ramapo. All classes are at the Kakiat School. In September there will be a new group of children coming into the kindergartens – many from Spanish speaking homes, some who do not yet speak English. The teachers no longer have assistants and are so happy to have volunteers who can read aloud to the children, and also can spend time with individuals or small groups of children helping them with activities and talking with them. You do not need to be a teacher to participate. Generally volunteers spend an hour in the classroom once a week.

If you are interested in participating, please contact:
