Overview of NIRF - 2020 rankings
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is an initiative of the Ministry of Human
Resource Development (MHRD) to rank higher education institutions across India. In addition to
other quality assessment efforts by the Government of India, such as National Assessment and
Accreditation Council (NAAC – for colleges and universities) and the National Board of
Accreditation (NBA) for technical and professional institutions, the NIRF is a framework, introduced
in 2016, to objectively compare institutions on parameters such as teaching performance, research
output, diversity, and reputation. The fifth edition of the NIRF rankings was released on 11 June
2020 with National Board of Accreditation (NBA) as its ranking agency.
The NIRF aims to identify and recognize top performing institutions, promote competitiveness
among institutions and assist prospective students in their decision-making process when
selecting institutions.
Categories of rankings:
NIRF releases overall rankings for universities and colleges as well as domain-specific rankings in
different disciplines to provide a common view of comparable institutions. There are total 10
categories of rankings under NIRF. They are colleges, engineering, management, pharmacy,
medical, architecture, law, dental, universities, and overall. NIRF has introduced dental as one of
its categories starting from this year. The ranking methodology for these different categories is
tailored to suit the nuances of individual discipline.
The number of participating institutes has been increasing since the launch of NIRF in 2016 across
all categories, showing the growing popularity and preference to participate in NIRF rankings.
Scoring and ranking:
The NIRF ranking is arrived at basis of an overall score which comprises the parameters which
have been organized into five broad head as mentioned below. The final score is calculated basis
the weightage of the following parameters and the institutions are ranked within their category.
▪ Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR) ▪ Research and Professional Practice (RPC) ▪ Graduation Outcomes (GO) ▪ Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) ▪ Perception.

ty Highlights of NIRF 2020 – University category
• The university category ranks participating state public, state private, central, and deemed-to-
be universities across the nation across the five parameters. This year’s top three ranked
private institutions and public institutions are:
Public/government Institutions Rank Private institutions Rank
Indian Institute of Science 1 Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham 4
Jawaharlal Nehru University 2 Manipal Academy of Higher
Education 8
Banaras Hindu University 3 Birla Institute of Technology &
Science 15
The top three public institutions continue to hold their fort at the top of the rankings. Amrita
Vishwa Vidyapeetham has climbed to fourth place in 2020 from eighth in the 2019 edition. Birla
Institute of Science & Technology, Pilani has recovered its drop to rank 23 in 2019 from rank 17
in 2018 to reach the 15th place in 2020.
• State public universities dominate the rankings: The top 100 university rankings are almost
equally populated by state public universities (41) and private institutions (40).
o This is a big jump for private institutions which only accounted for 28 institutions in the
top 100 of last year’s edition
o Central and public deemed universities account only for 19 institutions in the top 100
this year compared to 26 last year
o It is to be noted that while only 12 central universities feature in the list, they account
for 26 per cent of the 47 central universities in the country.

ty • Variation in scores by rank band: For universities in the rank band 31-80, a small shift in score
would result in a large shift of their ranking due to small deviations in scores in these rank
bands
• Top three states remain unchanged: Tamil Nadu continues to dominate the top 100 ranks with
18 universities this year (21 universities in 2019) followed by Maharashtra and Karnataka with
13 and 11 universities respectively. There is a lack of representation from states such as
Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Bihar. Assam continues to be the only representative from
the North Eastern states

There are 16 new entrants into top 100: The surge of new entrants is primarily driven by the
absence of agriculture-based1 universities from NIRF ‘University’ category. Of the 16 new entrants
in the top 100, 10 are private and six are state public universities

• A total 54 universities have shown an improvement in rankings: The top five climbers within
the top 100 have been depicted below. It is important to note that the growth of the these five
has been fueled by improvements in their perception score. Mumbai University and Mysore
University continue to improve significantly, having featured in last year’s top five climbers as
well. University of Jammu has recovered from the drop to rank 74 in 2019 from rank 51 in 2018
and stands at rank 54 in the 2020 edition
Note: The list does not include institutions that have moved from rank bands 101–200 and 151–200 into the top 100.
Note: The values for the parameters are the differences between the scores in 2020 and 2019
• 34 universities have dropped in rankings this year. The universities which have dropped
maximum number of ranks from 2019 are shown below along with their decline in parameter
scores. It is important to note that these institutions have improved their perception scores and
some of these institutions have also improved their total score and yet have slipped in
rankings. One of the key reasons for their decline is due to the rank band where they are
present. In such bands, a stagnation or marginal decline in score can result in a significant shift
in ranks.

Highlights of NIRF 2020 – Engineering category
• Total number of participating institutions: Engineering was one of the first categories
introduced by NIRF. Despite a dip in 2018, the number of participating institutions has been
steadily growing since then. A total of 1,071 institutions have participated this year, out of
which top 200 institutes have been given unique ranks and the next 100 institutions have been
categorised in two rank bands (201–250 and 251–300)
• The top performers for NIRF 2020 in the engineering category are as follows:
Public/Government institutions Rank Private institutions Rank
Indian Institute of Technology Madras 1 Vellore Institute of Technology,
Vellore 15
Indian Institute of Technology Delhi 2 Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham,
Coimbatore 20
Indian Institute of Technology
Bombay 3
Thapar Institute of Engineering &
Technology, Patiala 29
• Affiliated colleges are in majority in the top 200, followed by Institutes of National Importance
in the engineering category rankings
• Variation in scores by rank band: For the engineering category, the variation of scores, that is
the difference in maximum score and minimum score in that rank band decreases as the ranks
drop. This implies that a unit shift in score in the lower rank bands will result in significant shift
in the rankings

these 50 institutions, six of them have broken into the top 100 this year from the 101–150 rank
band last year. The institutions which made the biggest climb (from 2019) within the top 100
ranks are shown below. An increase of 4-6 points has resulted in a significant climb of 20–30
ranks. The increase in overall score for both institutions can be attributed to the increase in
graduation outcome score
*The values for the parameters are the differences between the scores in 2020 and 2019
Case in Point: Madras School of Social Work
Madras School of Social Work has seen the highest positive movement in this category. It has 32

India. The reason for this is an increase in score by almost six points influenced by the
improvement in the graduation outcome (GO) and outreach and inclusivity (OI) parameters

featured in the top 100 last year, slipped into the 151–200 rank band this year, while eight of
them have dropped to the 101–150 rank band. The institutions which have dropped maximum
number of ranks (from 2019) within the top 100 rank band are shown below. One of the key
reasons for their decline can be attributed to the score band cluster in which they are present.
