ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
This directory counts on the efforts of several individuals. Credit goes to those people whocontributed immensely to the development of this source of information in water supply andsanitation and made it's production possible.
Mr. Paul Saka Chikombe, a Senior Documentalist at NETWAS was instrumental in the process ofgathering, analysis, editing and the final product. Other people who contributed in one way oranother are Boaz Adaji Saava, David Mulonzia Kilonzo and Miss. Rhoda Kioni. They had thedifficult task of collecting data from the respondents scattered all over the country. Theyencountered a number of challenges and their patience and devotion proved useful in ensuringa good coverage of the target institutions. To all these persons mentioned above, NETWAS isgreatly indebted.
Special thanks go to Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) who provided financialsupport and thus enabled this directory to be developed. The investment put into the productionof this document will continue to bear fruits through the continued use by the actors in watersupply and sanitation sector.
NETWAS hopes to continuously update this directory in the future in order to keep it in pace withthe developments in the sector. We welcome suggestions and proposals.
Wilfred M. Ndegwa, Programme ManagerNetworking and Information Services

FOREWORD
NETWAS mission is to improve the living conditions of the people of Eastern Africa particularlythe poor. With its operations dating back ten years ago in 1986, NETWAS has been able toaddress the water supply and sanitation issues with a considerable degree of success throughspecialised programmes in training, consultancy, advocacy, networking and informationdissemination services.
NETWAS realises the important role information dissemination plays in the sector. Over theyears, NETWAS has responded to the needs of sector institutions by conducting seminars/workshops in information management in a number of countries in the region. Assistance hasalso been provided in form of donation of information materials through support from donorsespecially the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation—SDC. The aim has also been todisseminate valuable expriences and lessons learnt from development projects and researchundertaken in the region.
NETWAS has a well established documentation centre with a wide collection of documents onwater supply and sanitation. These include journals, audio-visual materials, books, monographs, grey literature, and conference proceedings all focusing on rural and peri-urbanwater supply and sanitation sector. The materials cover a wide range of subjects, includingtechnological options (appropriate and low cost), project sustainability, communitymanagement, gender, socio-economic issues, etc. The centre is also linked to global informationdatabanks in all parts of the developed world where a number of retrospective searches can bemade for vital information.
As an independent NGO, NETWAS realises the gap in information available to the sectorprofessionals. Field working NGOs, Government Institutions and Donor Agencies lack valuableinformation retrieval tools which can be pointers to sources of relevant literature in the sector.Lack of such tools has greatly inhibited collaboration and replication of "best practice" orlessons learnt. Instead it has encouraged duplication of research.
The directory of sources of Information and Documentation (Kenya) is one effort to bridge thisinformation gap. NETWAS is keen to promote information networking amongst sectorprofessionals to ensure the sustainability of water and sanitation programmes. This directorycontains information on thematic areas of each organization as they relate to water includingspecific subjects in water supply and sanitation.
It is hoped that this project will be a challenge to all information providers to open upmechanisms to facilitate access to information in various areas for our national development.Arrangements are at hand to prepare similar directories for Uganda and Tanzania in the nexttwo years.
It is my hope and pride that this directory will prove useful in helping forge close links ofcollaboration amongst those involved in water supply and sanitation projects.
