New systemassists anti-virusdevelopers

Sophos Anti-Virus and TheWildList Organization Inter-national have launched REVS(Rapid Exchange of VirusSamples), a ground-breakingnew system that will enableanti-virus developers world-wide to quickly and securelyexchange ‘urgent’ virus sam-ples, thereby pooling theirresources and expertise in thefight to protect end-usersfrom the threat of rapidlyspreading viruses.

The backbone of REVS is a server housed in a secureserver room at Sophos head-quarters, which encrypts andforwards a secure copy ofurgent viruses to all participat-ing anti-virus developers.REVS will assist anti-virussoftware vendors by ensuringthat they receive new virussamples within minutes of arapidly spreading virus beingdiscovered.

The REVS mailing list iscontrolled by custom-builtsoftware, written by TheWildList Organization, whichmanages the encryption andexchange of urgent virus sam-ples. When a participantdeems that a virus is urgent, asample is encrypted, signedwith the anti-vendor’s key andthen sent to the REVS server.

The system then resends thesample to the list participants, encrypting it correctly for eachindividual receipient.

Any company that producesan anti-virus product can par-ticipate in the REVS messag-ing service free of charge.

Biometricssecures Sun’s JavaCard

Keyware Technologies, aprovider of biometric identifi-cation solutions, has announ-ced an effort to stimulate thedevelopment of biometricapplications with Sun’s JavaCard platform for smart cards.

Sun’s Java Card platformenables users to combine themultiple forms of data storedon the numerous cards carriedin one’s wallet into one, simplesmart card application.Instead of carrying three sepa-rate credit cards, a bankcard, amedical card and several fre-quent flyer cards, users willsoon be able to carry one cardfor all of these applications. With multiple applications ona smart card, a higher level ofsecurity is needed to protectthe information, and biomet-rics is a viable solution for theenhancement of smart cardsecurity.

Keyware’s layered biometricstechnology provides smartcard users with a method ofsecuring access to the multipleforms of information at a levelmuch higher than that of a

simple PIN code. By provid-ing a combination of a PINcode and voice, face and/orfingerprints, users will be pro-tected from unauthorizedindividuals and personal infor-mation on the card will besecure.

Data protectionfor Web sites

Gilian Technologies has devel-oped the G-Server Web con-tent security and integritysystem with ExitControl tech-nology. The G-Server preventsaccidental or intentional dam-age to Web site data by trans-parently intercepting andreplacing corrupt, altered ordefaced content before it isreleased to the public.

The G-Server is designed tooffer content-rich sites highreliability and assurances thatthe data they publish is gen-uine. This is especially impor-tant to publishers whose Webcontent is their fundamentalbusiness.

The G-Server is a systems-level solution that resides on anetwork between the Internetand a Web server. Because ituses no IP address, it is literal-ly invisible as a network deviceand makes it extremely secure. As new content and material iscreated for the site, the high-performance G-Server createsalgorithmically coded digitalsignatures of the content, thusmaking any alteration, forgeryor defacement easy to detect

and correct. Any change incontent will break the digitalsignature. When a Web objectis requested, an integrity checkis made by the G-Serveragainst the digital signature onfile. Genuine content will beallowed to pass without anydelay.

Event manage-ment and analysisfor Windows

Aelita Software has announcedthe launch of EventAdmin 4.0,which streamlines event man-agement and security auditingfor Windows 2000 andWindows NT networksthrough event log collection, warehousing and analysis.

The program builds on thecapabilities of Microsoft SQLServer 7.0 to provide sophisti-cated event management andanalysis capabilities. Each ofthe program’s 120 reports canbe customized to provide spe-cific information on security, resource usage, system failures, hardware problems, remoteaccess services and other net-work events. EventAdmin alsoprovides automatic notifica-tion of events that may indi-cate impending systemproblems or attempted securi-ty breaches.

EventAdmin 4.0 providesfull support for Windows TaskScheduler, increased controlover event gathering and datahandling, and supports HTMLreports and OLAP services.
