Dear Readers,Some time ago, I drove past a billboard that advertised the life of the Indian Army … it read ‘Honor in the Past and Pride in the Present.’
We always talk about how the Community rests on laurels of the past and I thought that the saying on the Army billboard was a good way to structure
the way we think about ourselves now… eking out the bets in our rich past yet constantly improving and bettering the lives of our present so that we can take immense pride in what our little Community does even today.
By the end of 2014, the Community was properly introduced to 2 new initiatives created to help our overall growth, the Jiyo Parsi Scheme and the XYZ (Xtremely Young Zoroastrians). The two, join an already impressive list of organizations that work every day for the betterment

This week too, we cover the WZCC, an organization that has created a strong networking

Dear Editor,This is with reference to the
article “Will Jiyo Parsi Help Us Deliver?” By Ms. Piroja Jokhi in your Parsi Times edition dated 3rd Jan, 2015. Although the views of Ms. Jokhi are quite thought provoking, there seems to be no clarity on the different ways suggested by her to increase our population.
In her article she has very rightly mentioned that “We should be more concerned about the decline in moral values than decline in number. It was not the number but the values of wisdom, morality and spirit of philanthropy of our ancestors that gave us a unique identity.” Wise words indeed!!!
However, later in the article she
born of interfaith marriages should be allowed to adopt Zoroastrian religion.” She further goes on with an even more ridiculous solution by saying “We may even consider children adopted at birth and brought up in a Parsi atmosphere to be initiated into the faith. “Any educated person will be aware that the genes of a person count more than the atmosphere in which a child is brought up. At one stage she speaks so highly of the rich values we have inherited from our ancestors and even criticizes the arrogant and pampered children of corrupt politicians and corporates” (obviously Non Parsis). She even warns Parsi parents not to allow our sweet Parsi children to mix with them and almost immediately contradicts it all by saying we should allow such children to be adopted by Parsis and then brought up as Parsis.
Are we so badly in need of people that we should take the progeny of “arrogant and corrupt people” into our fold??
I fully agree with her that it is our quality and not the quantity that makes us shine like bright stars in an otherwise dark and murky world of corruption, crime and dishonesty which sets one to wonder whether this is truly a
thrive in number but with a HUGE compromise on quality.
We left our motherland (to save our religion) in a small boat and in all probability we will leave the shores of India one day, again in a small boat. What matters is that we return to our motherland with our Tokham Kyani (genes) intact and not with a huge battalion of interfaith people who will have no idea of who they are or where they belong.Sanaea Chichgar
Dear Editor,All would have read the
news about some alleged re-conversions that took place in the state of U.P. and Gujarat where some Muslims/Christians were converted into Hinduism in the name of Gharvapasi. When the Union Government was questioned on this issue, by the opposition parties, it was stated that ruling party is absolutely against forced conversions. So the entire Government is against forced conversion.
Now, my pertinent question to all is that are our “Dhongidox Bawas” not following the policy of forced conversion? When a
practicing Zoroastrian girl marries interfaith, she is forced to discard the religion of her birth/parents and made to ‘accept’ the religion of her husband.
Is this not a concrete example of forced conversion?
A daring lady like Goolrukh Gupta has challenged this fatwa issued by Valsad Punchayat.
I request all the known legal luminaries to obtain a pronouncement from the Court against these Ddhongidox for violation of fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution.Homi Dalal

Yummy for your Tummy! 07SATURDAY, JANUARY 10, 2015
It’s a new year and e v e r y o n e
is desperate to stick to their well intentioned resolutions. A lot of people (most of our team and myself i n c l u d e d )
have sworn to kick start the year on a healthy note. If you are one such person then I strongly recommend you trot downtown to Bandra and treat yourself at the Bombay S a l a d Company.
In a city that is packed with eateries, tiny grub shops, fancy
a variety of cuisines, there is hardly if at all any, salad bars. Back in the day Eat Around The Corner would dish out an enormous salad bar but now the desserts and sandwiches have taken over and the salad counter has shrunk. Pizza By The Bay, what was formerly Jazz By The Bay still does their soup salad sandwich lunch but that menu hasn’t changed in a decade and it’s lost its initial luster.
Strapped for choice when it comes to healthy yet tasty food, the Bombay Salad Company is a breath of fresh air. As the name suggests, Salads are their forte. They have a list of cheekily named vegetarian and non vegetarian salads, sandwiches, wraps, beverages (smoothies, green teas, juices) and some dessert. All the ingredients are fresh, organic and locally sourced. You could also tailor make your own
you. I have two favourites one vegetarian salad called ‘The Hipster’ which is beautiful combination of kale, quinoa, orange, cranberry, carrot, pomegranate, mixed seeds, ricotta cheese in an orange carrot vinaigrette. Kale has become a trendy ingredient and believe it or not it’s actually healthier than spinach. The salad is delicious and one I’ll happily eat again and again. The big portion is for Rs. 355 but the small bowl is for Rs. 205.
‘The Goan’ is a brilliant combination of mixed lettuce, fava beans (I switched them for mushrooms) Goan pork chorizo, grilled zucchini, peppers, tomato and bocconcini cheese in a rosemary balsamic vinaigrette. The
pork is beautifully surprisingly light salad. The big bowl is priced at Rs. 385 and the small bowl for Rs. 225.
‘The Mexican’ is another fun twist with lettuce leaves, corn, prawn and lots of avacado (375/215) ‘The Red Samurai’ is a lovely meal with mixed lettuce, soba noodles, terriyaki chicken (or tofu) brocolli, grilled peppers, peanuts and a spicy soy ginger dressing (415/235).
You can choose from grilled mushroom and
gouda to tuna, goan pork sausage or
shredded beef
sandwiches, fresh fruit juices or even some relatively healthy dessert like honey and fresh fruit, oat chia pudding with cashew milk or a lovely orange almond pound cake topped with homemade dark chocolate sorbet. The last one is anything but healthy but it’s worth the cheat.
get a little expensive but if you order two small bowls and a beverage you can easily eat a meal in under Rs. 600. Don’t be fooled by the small
bowl means you get to try more! So give the chutney eedaa pattice, cutlets,
kebabs and chawal a miss for a while and try something different. This is not diet food where it’s bland and boring but a really tasty twist to some healthy fresh food.
The Bombay Salad Company is located in Bandra, right next door to Kareems or in the same lane as Hawaiian Shack or Between Breads.

The year 1964 was probably the last and quintessential year in
the golden period of Hindi Film Music. It had some exceptionally talented music directors ruling the airwaves to provide the listener memorable music. Depravation in lyrics had not set in, tunes were more internally ‘inspired’, and the entire music industry - composers, singers, lyricists had a familial look and feel about it. Yes, there was some outstanding music even till the late 60s. But that earlier ensemble of great songs, singers and composers was missing.
the baton – wielders, the singers and the songs to make a mark and leave an impact on us mortals?
There were around 99

the songs which captured the listeners’ attention.
Let’s start with the lesser-known composers and the ones with just a handful of
great music. C. Arjun (Arjun
Chandnani), one of the few Sindhi music-directors in the industry scored Punar Milan, which had Mohammad

Shehnai virtuoso Ramlal’s Geet Gaaya Pathharon Ne
was a musical with background score by Vasant Desai. Hemant Kumar’s suspenseful Kohra was a sleeper hit with the producer-cum-composer-cum-singer’s ‘Yeh Nayan Dare Dare’ and ‘Raah Bani Khud Manzil’.
The lesser known Lachhiram, who 3 years earlier had given us the memorable

Stalwarts Onkar Prasad Nayyar and Naushad had

Naushad Ali, who had an enviable body of work behind him, and in a sense, had nothing more to prove, had the semi-successful Leader with his (then) favourite Dilip Kumar lip-

Parsi Times: What prompted you to provide for a Rescue and First aid vehicle to ferry animals in this remote region?Farzad: I lost two of my most affectionate and loving beings because of precisely the lack of such a services’ availability. I lost a horse (one that had been rescued, about 18 months ago) and then my dearest possession, a Great Dane, seven months back, to snake-bite. My care-taker informed me it was due to poisoning. Few days later he photographed a viper snake in the vicinity that may have bitten them. On both the occasions, by the time I rushed a vehicle from Mumbai, both my darlings were dead. That got me thinking ‘Why not provide for a fully equipped rescue vehicle for animals here so we can provide them with medical attention immediately? I have
providing for the minutest details. There is a provision for almost everything in case of any emergency. Even the drawers telescope at different heights under a 4 foot by 3 foot platform which can be used by the vets as an emergency operating table. There are callipers for catching snakes and a separate storage for them.
Once caught they can be released in a safe environment where they can do lesser or no harm to animals and humans. As you may have noticed the driving compartment has been separated from the main body of the van by a wire-mesh and grille. As I do interior designing myself I could think of many features that we have incorporated into its construction and design.PT: Farzad, tell us something about yourself.Farzad: I have many interests, primarily I run a company called ‘Aqua Personal’. I personally give swimming lessons to my clients, quite a few of them celebrities and their children.
December and January is a vacation time as the water tends to be cold. Interior designing is my
second passion and I do that for living
My wife Amy, who is a Fashion Designer, has her own Studio and Boutique. And I design Fashion head- gear for many clients. I feel blessed for all that God has given me and don’t ask HIM for anything EVER. I live my life in eternal gratitude and HE guides me on my path daily. My daughter, Aariyanne is schooling and is in the 6th grade in Poddar School. My parents, wife, daughter and sister support and encourage me in all my efforts, every time; and one can’t ask for more, I feel God’s presence with us all the time and in every breath. Many well-wishers have told me that I am a softy and fall for any sob-story, but I

As I kept on with ideas for that purpose the expenses kept mounting. Also there is a running cost involved. The driver’s salary, Vet’s salary, maintenance of the vehicle, fuel, etc. We, my wife and I collected about Rs. 25,000 in donations from friends; the rest was borne by me, around

The 23rd of December, 2014 was the 3rd Anniversary of Roxanne’s Trust and that is when we handed over the
vehicle to her.PT: Any message for our Readers’ Farzad?Farzad: Yes, “The happiest people don’t have everything in life; they just KEEP creating situations that bring happiness everyday…! Be happy forever. Donate to our noble cause!”
Being an animal-lover is a full–time job. And this adage is proven yet again by Farzad Billimoria who has his farm-house in Karjat which is home to a pair of emu’s, a pair of dogs,

Dear Mamaiji,
You always make me read the Gujarati calendar date from the front page of the Parsi Times. Today is Ashtad Roj. What does that mean?
Dear Dikri,
Today is Ashtad Roj. Ashtad Yazad stands for Justice, Morality, Honesty and living a life of Rectitude. Call upon this Feminine Yazad if you are seeking justice either in a court of law or in life. If you are not in the wrong, she will surely assist you. However, divine justice is based on one’s actions, words, thoughts in this world, so be sure that you are living life with Good Thoughts, Words and Deeds to guide you daily. This cuts across all religious and non-religious systems and beliefs. Remember, as you sow, so shall you reap. We Indians have a term for it : Karma. While we live on earth, in a human body, Karmas become a part of our life and living. Thus, Ask Ashtad Yazad to assist you to create good, balanced Karma so that you live a noble life. In the now, and the hereafter. With inputs from Parvez J. Daruwala
