Dr. Ahmed Elaksher
Ahmed Elaksher is an assistant professor at NMSU, College of Engineering. Before that he worked as an assistant professor at St. Cloud State University. He also worked as a post-‐doctoral researcher in the Mapping and GIS Lab at Ohio State University and at the Geographic Information Science Center of Excellence at South Dakota State University. He obtained his PhD from Purdue University in 2002. His primary research focus is large scale mapping from satellite imageries, aerial photos, and LIDAR datasets. He published several journal articles and conference papers in photogrammetry, remote sensing, GIS, and Geomatics. Dr. Elaksher is currently teaching courses in the Surveying Engineering program at NMSU, conducting research in different geospatial areas and working closely with the Jornada Experimental Range on UAV aerial mapping. He serves as the secretary for the Board of Directors of the ASPRS-‐Rocky Mountain Region and he is also a surveying intern in New Mexico.
Karl Tonander, PE
Mr. Tonander has over 20 years of environmental engineering and geological experience including petroleum storage tank investigation and remediation, mining reclamation, water system evaluation and design, hydrogeologic studies and compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). He is a Senior Vice President and COO of Souder, Miller & Associates, a New Mexico-‐based engineering, environmental and surveying consulting firm. In addition, he has been a member and officer for several local and regional public and professional organizations including the New Mexico Section of the American Institute of Professional Geologists, the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, Mineral Engineering Department ABET Industry Advisory Board and Environmental and Civil Engineering Department ABET Industry Advisory Board. In 2014, Mr. Tonander was appointed to the New Mexico State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Professional Surveyors. He regularly leads for a variety of organizations on subjects such as hydrology and well design, Phase I Environmental Site Assessments and professional ethics.
Kris Kline, PLS
Kristopher M. Kline, president of 2Point, Inc., has a four-‐year degree (class of '84) in general science from Bridgewater College located in Bridgewater, Va. and has been involved in the surveying profession since graduation. Kris became licensed in North Carolina in 1991 (P.L.S. – 3374). He is a 1999 graduate of the North Carolina Society of Surveyors (N.C.S.S.) Institute, a three-‐year continuing education program that for many years drew national attention for the quality of its curriculum and instructors. Kris served for 3 years as Chairman of the N.C.S.S. Education Committee. He has appeared as an expert witness in court on numerous occasions and has spent the last several years in the hard school of boundary dispute (an informal class taught the hard way with no fixed curriculum, location, or schedule!)
In August 2013, Kris published his first book “Rooted in Stone: the Development of Adverse Possession in 20 Eastern States and the District of Columbia.” This text considers adverse possession and prescriptive easements from their inception to the present day. Present projects include two new books on Unwritten Property Rights and Riparian Boundaries.

Fundamentals of Plane Survey Calculations (no CEU’s) Speaker: Dr. Ahmed Elaksher 8:00am – 12:00pm
This class will build up the basic skills in the area of surveying computations for those interested in taking the NGS Certified Survey Technician exam or the FS exam. It will develop the attendees understanding in employing trigonometry, geometry, and algebra principles in different types of surveys. After discussing each concept we will go over example problems that will provide an opportunity to apply the presented concept and strengthen your problem-‐solving skills. Participants are encouraged to bring their own calculators they will use in the actual exams to practice using them.
Ethics for Land Surveyors and Engineers (4 CEU’s, ethics) Speaker: Karl Tonander, PE 1:00pm – 5:00pm
The general format will follow an interactive format where topics are introduced but audience participation drives the specific areas of discussion. Topics will include: why ethics matters, TX PS regulatory drivers for ethics, NCEES-‐based discussion of ethics, and corporate ethics in business development.
Courtroom Preparation and Testimony (4 CEU’s, 2 apply to ethics) Speaker: Kris Kline, PLS 8:00am – 12:00pm
Courtroom testimony is one of the most difficult responsibilities that a professional surveyor can assume. The student will follow the entire process from the initial client contact to the courtroom. Methods of collecting, preserving, and presenting evidence will be discussed, along with depositions and preparation for testimony. Courtroom demeanor and presentation skills will be addressed, along with tips for enhancing your professional appearance and danger signs to watch for in cross-‐examination. Aspects of concise communications with your client and attorney, opposing attorneys, and with the judge and jury will be discussed.
Three New (or not so new) Ways to Get into Trouble (4 CEU’s, 2 apply to ethics) Speaker: Kris Kline, PLS 1:00pm – 5:00pm
This class focuses on three major topics: (1) Lands protected by the Public Trust Doctrine; (2) In-‐depth discussion of the Doctrine of Merger and its effect on existing easements; (3) Slander of Title. These issues have recently become of greater interest (and concern) to surveyors.
