Our small club had an interesting and enjoyable year . In late October GTU sponsored a geography quiz in the student union to test students' knowledge of geography and draw their attention to the upcoming Geography Awareness Week. The Friday before Geography Awareness Week, we published some of the results of the quiz and promoted geography as an interesting and rewarding career. During Geography Awareness Week, we again set up a table in the union and highlighted different aspects of geography and promoted our department.
In December we joined with SGE (Earth Science Honorary) and went caving at Pictured Rock State Park and afterwards had a blast tubing in the snow. In the spring we held our twelfth Annual Geography Awards Banquet with over 50 in attendance. This years banquet was held in honor of Basheer K. Nijim, a much loved and respected teacher and friend, who died on Feb. 11, 1991 . We ended the year joining SGE again and going camping, canoeing, caving and fossil hunting on May 17-19. We raised money this year selling T-shirts and collecting pop cans. Our club brought in over $750.00 worth of receipts to help buy computers for an area elementary school.

Highligh ts of Activities : Omicron Chapter sent 10 members to
the annual conference of the National Council for Geographic Education in Williamsburg , VA. In addition to attending workshops and paper sessions, they participated in field trips and assisted in conference registration over a three-day period.
During Geography Awareness Week, the membership placed geography trivia questions on tables in dining halls. A pretzel sale held at that time featured free pretzels for answering geography questions correctly . A Christmas social was held at the home of President Beth Kirman and was followed by a trip in Hershey Park's Christmas Candy Lane. Another trip , focused on weather forecasting, for chapter members to Harrisburg. They first visited the National Weather Service Office and saw instrumentation and communication equipment at work. This included active radar images of precipitation crossing Pennsylvania and parts of adjacent states. The second stop was uptown at a local television station. There, weatherman Chuck Rhodes of Channel 27 showed and expla ined various graphics which are used in putting together the weather segment of local news.
Omicron Chapter's social highlight of the year, its annual spring banquet, was held in mid-March. The Winsor and Achuff Awards for service and scholastic improvement went to president Kristen Travers and to member Sherri Longenecker. Dr. Elaine Bosowski of Villanova University made the after-dinner presentation on " Images of the American Southwest. " Sixty persons attended . The years's final jaunt led to the top of Shenandoah National Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Much of the time was utilized in exploring the park and adjacent parts of the Shenandoah Valley. Historic Harpers Ferry was visited on the way home. The Chapter undertook three projects in celebration of our 25th birthday. The original Charter scroll was re-matted in organizational colors, re-framed and prominently displayed in the department. Our second project is a directory of membership containing historical information, present membership information and accomplishments, and our hopes for the future of Geography at the University. The culminating project for our birthday year was a visit by Dr. Alice Rech lin, Associate Director, Cartography Division, National Geographic Society. She spoke to an audience of about 200 students and faculty on cartographic techniques and the National Geographic Society. We sponsored an open forum during February on the Desert Storm operation giving students an opportunity to ask questions about political, philosophical , and military implications of this historic event. Iota Alpha ended the Spring Semester by co -sponsoring the Department picnic where there was plenty of

The Iota Lambda Chapter at Central Missouri State led an active year. Canoeing and camping along the Northfolk River in Missouri ' s Ozarks topped our calendar in October. The karst topography of the region marks for a scenic and educational trip . In November, our members manned a table for Geography Awareness Week. We asked passersby in the corridor outside Department's hall to take a geographic
knowledge test that we wrote. Additionally, we provide information concerning Geography as a discipline, and as a possible major for people to consider. We went cave exploring in Columbia, Missouri last March. One highlight of that trip included the opportunity to see an endangered species of bat. Ha Ha Tonka State Park was our outing in April. This park, near Missouri's Lake of tbe Ozarks, is thoroughly riddled with karst topographic features. At the end of April we had our annual picnic and awards ceremony.

At New Mexico State University, the Kappa Xi Chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon, known as the Geoplanners, was involved in such activities as: Earth Day; having professional geographers and planners give colloquium talks generally promoting geographic awareness; recycling bins-four bins were designed and built by our club to hold paper, when implemented on campus these bins became popular enough to gather nearly two tons of paper a month and two other clubs as well as the Housing Department copied our design to make bins for themselves. The Geoplanners also have been involved in making our own T-shirts which have a world projection with New Mexico outlined and reading "New Mexico U.S.A. No Visa Required." These shirts sell very well and are our biggest money maker. Hiking, rock climbing and other day trips as well as parties also keep the club rolling.

The Kappa Delta Chapter of GTU at CCSU had another fantastic year! We inducted 14 new members into our Chapter at the annual Department of Geography Honors Banquet, which was held at a fine Chinese restaurant. We challenge every other Chapter to match our number of initiates over the past 10 years! We also participated in a series of interesting events in cooperation with the Geography Club. These included a hike up Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire, setting up a display for Geography Awareness Week, enjoying a slide talk on South America by Dr. Leon Vacher, and hosting the State Geography Bee, among others. We go out of our way to make students feel welcome at our activities. This is one reason why the number of geography majors has more than tripled in just two years.

Gamma Theta Upsilon has had a great year here at South Dakota State University. We began our year by welcoming the new students with our annual fall picnic. Because of activities like picnics and trips we have successfully strengthened our Club with many bright, new students. Many of those students helped us to make Geographic Awareness Week in November a great learning experience th roughout the campus. The highlight of our year was the 22nd Annual Geography Convention which was held on March 14, 15, 16, 1991 . Great scholars such as John Hudson, H. Jesse Walker, John Fraser Hart, Matti Kaups, Cotton Mather, Robert Stoddard, Phil Gersmehl, Richard Boehm, and Lowell Goodman presented lectures to a vast array of students and colleagues. It was fun to see the students get involved. Some of the students enjoyed a ski trip this last winter to the Black Hills of South Dakota. We had a picnic this spring which was also fun. We are planning great things for next year here at SDSU.

The Zeta Zeta Chapter of GTU at Texas A&M University is being rejuvenated! After a year of being relatively inactive,
the Chapter is being re-activated with new members, new officers and a new advisor. Zeta Zeta Chapter has decided to integrate its activities to a greater extent with the Texas A&M Geography Club. This allows functions to be held in unison with the club and generates a better student turnout, because most GTU members are club members also. We are not requ iring GTU members to join the club, rather we are allowing students to optimize their time spent on extra-curricular activities. The Chapter still maintains its strict membership requirements and does have its own functions separate from the club's. During this past year, we have initiated 15 new members and expect more to come. We are looking forward to a very productive year!

members were initiated into the Chapter in early December. As part of celebration of National Geography Awareness week in November, Zeta Omicron invited Alexander Sergeevich Shestakov, a Soviet geographer visiting Clark University, to speak to our Chapter members and geography faculty. His very interesting presentation using slides dealt with the problems of environmenJal degradation in the Soviet Union. During Feb. 1991, Zeta Omicron participated in our college Honors Convocation, holding a reception for our new members and electing officers for the next academic year. During April we held a bake sale and were quite successful in raising money for our chapter's expenses. Part of our bake sale income was used to purchase honor's tassels for our graduating seniors. During May we culminated our activities for the academic school year with a trip to the Fisher Forest Museum in Petersham, MA, and a subsequent picnic and barbecue at a state park.
ZETA RHO-Department of Geography, State University of New York at Binghamton, Binghamton, NY 13901
Sponsor : Mr. Lucius Willis; Presi dent: Ruth A. Elliot ; Vice President: Ellen S. Taub Highlights of Activities:
SUNY-Binghamton ' s GTU chapter, Zeta Rho, has been very active during the 1990-91 academic year. We began fall 1990, by inducting four new members. Furthermore, a spring initiation ceremony is planned for May. We are adding a theme to this semester's ceremony because the ceremony is often boring: "Come as your favorite geographer, dead or alive." This theme stems from a course taken by many graduate students, " Geographic Theory," in which historical figures in geography are discussed. A prize will be awarded to the best costume.
Zeta Rho also began a weekly discussion series held on Fridays at 3:00 p.m. At these informal meetings, topics related to the discipline of geography are discussed, and plenty of popcorn is eaten. In addition, Zeta Rho observed Geog-
124
raphy Awareness Week with a contest and information booth in the University Union. The table was very popular and over one hundred students were introduced to the discipline of geography. Globe yo-yos were also sold during Geography Awareness Week to raise money for future events. And finally, Zeta Rho is sponsoring two consecutive panel discussions on " Careers in Geography" (Friday, April 19, and Friday, April 26). Many alumni and other distinguished guests have been invited to present their views on career opportunities in Geography, and the skills needed to obtain a job in the public and private sectors.

The Eta Gamma Chapter of GTU at SUNY Geneseo sponsored a number of interesting events and activities this year. The Chapter hosted a coffee hour for students and faculty, and members organized a Geography Career's Night to introduce majors and other interested students to the opportunities available in the field. Two Geneseo Geography graduates presented their experiences on job searches at the latter event. Field trips once again were highlights of the year. During the Fall Semester, the Chapter toured the inside of the Mt. Morris Corps of Engineers flood control dam in Letchworth State Park. Spring found the group whitewater rafting above that dam, through the "Grand Canyon of the East." The water and air temperature for the rafting meant mandatory wet suits for all, but the beauty of the inner canyon and waterfalls was unforgettable. The Chapter inducted sixteen new members during the annual department Spring Awards Banquet in April. Major awards went to members Andrew Richardson,
El izabeth Bolak, Aaron Wheeler, Maura Huntz, and Nickolas Deluca.
