February Program: Laurin McCracken: Painting Silver and Crystal
In February, SWS will have a unique opportunity to experience Laurin McCracken, a well published and award-winning watercolorist. Laurin has at least a dozen signature memberships, is a popular juror, and a well-respected teacher. Laurin is a painter of silver and crystal and will demonstrate various techniques and color mixes needed to paint an realistic still life. Also, he will demonstrate the “Two-brush” technique of making objects look round and talk a bit about the history of still life painting.
We have a few spaces left. Register at www.swswatercolor.org. If you have
any questions, contact Pam Wilson, 972.839.1086 or
Each day there will be a PowerPoint presentation; a survey of basic
watercolor techniques with examples from the great artists; a history of still
life painting and/or examples of realistic still life painting. Each participant
will work on a basic silver and crystal
painting from a photo of a still life
that will be provided. The object will
be to learn the various techniques
and color mixes need to paint a
realistic still life. Emphasis will be
given to the “Two-brush” technique
of making objects look round. Each
session will have a demonstration.
Each participant gets personal
attention during the painting
periods.
A three-day workshop in painting realism in watercolor February 11, 12, 13—Artists Showplace IT TAKES A

Call for SWS Board/
Committee Members
The Nominating Committee is seeking
people interested in serving SWS in
various positions on the Board and as
Committee Chairpersons. Vital to the
continued success of SWS are the
volunteers who give time, talent, and
energy to the organization. Whatever
your interest or talents, there is always
room for more helpers. Please take a
moment to consider the possible areas
in which you might be helpful and
contact Mickey Archer at
[email protected] (972) 974-

bers. Debra set the bar really high but we have such a talented
and diverse group of members, so I know some of you will “step
up” to keep the momentum going.
Walt Davis has arranged for an exhibition in Paris (Texas)
through Joe McCord of the Lamar County Art Guild. Walt will col-
lect two paintings from each artist who wants to submit their work
for the paint-out at our February meeting and transport them to
Paris. The show will go up the first of March and hang until March
28th. Get those paintings framed and bring them to Walt at the
February meeting.
Jonesy just shipped our 14 entries into the Western Fed show
to Phoenix and the exhibition opens the first of April, so good luck
to all those who got in.
Northpark is sponsoring ARTSPARK on Saturday, April 5th, and
has invited SWS to participate. The event is from noon to 4:00 PM
and we will be looking for a number of artists to do painting dem-
onstrations like we did last year.
We have a lot to look forward to in the next few months!

Spring seems so far away, yet it isn’t.
I have called together a committee to
draft a slate of officers for next year
and hope to offer it up to the mem-
bership in a few weeks. Our Spring
paint-out is coming up in early April,
too, and we can “wade out” into the
blue bonnets in Glen Rose and cap-
ture the first blush of green grass,
blooming flowers and blue skies.
Bill Johnson circulated a sign up
sheet to find people interested in
doing more plein air painting at the
January meeting and the response is
huge (over 80 people have signed
up), so stay tuned for new painting
opportunities coming soon.
We are finalizing details for our
2014 membership show coming in
September and hope to have the
prospectus on line very soon. Fealing
Lin is our juror this year and her
workshop is filling fast, so jump in
while there is still room.
Debra Linker is stepping down as
the SCENE editor and also as Public

ART SHOW IN PARIS Joe McCord, president of the Lamar County Art Guild, has invited participants in the SWS fall paint-out in Paris to exhibit their work in a special show at the Plaza Art Gallery scheduled to open the evening of Thursday, March 6.
Those wishing to participate are asked to bring one or two framed paintings, ready to hang, to the February 11 meeting of the Society. Walt Davis will transport them to Paris in time for the March opening. The show will close Friday, March 28, and Walt will return the paintings to participants at the SWS meeting April 8.
This is a wonderful opportunity to exhibit our work to an appreciative. The Paris Chamber of Commerce has already put the event on their calendar, and additional publicity will follow.

By: Ruth Siegel, SWS Board Member SPOTLIGHT ON ARTIST OF THE MONTH
In her own words: “A painting should give the viewer a new idea or appreciation of even the most familiar subject. The
abstract forms in my paintings are shapes that I have drawn in the past from the many places that I have visited. I start
with a somewhat abstract drawing based on realism. The more abstract the drawing, the more freedom and opportu-
nity I have to combine wonderful new color harmonies and textures. The more realistic my drawing, the more respon-
sibility I have to recreate realistic color. Sometimes I make several paintings of a subject, attempting to portray the
message more simply and directly.” Jane has a fine arts degree from Louisiana Tech. She has spent her adult life paint-
ing in a variety of mediums and mentoring other artists. She has travelled extensively and many of her paintings have
been influenced by her travels. She has been recognized by many art groups, achieving Signature membership at SWS,
National Watercolor Society, Western Federation, Texas Visual Arts Association, Purple Sage Brush Society, Louisiana
Watercolor Society and Mississippi Watercolor Society. As a member of ArtFocusXC, she has exhibited in several Texas
museums and JC Penney Corporate Center. She has a painting in the permanent collection at the Mississippi Art Mu-
seum in Jackson and has shown her work in Milan, Italy. American Artist Magazine named her one of the top 50 experi-
mental artists in the US. And she is also in several issues of Who’s Who. In addition, Jane has been a highly respected
and much loved teacher, teaching art in the public school system and in the community college system. Jane
maintains a studio at Studio One Nineteen on North Central Expressway and a studio at home. In addition to
her many varied achievements, she remains an active and enthusiastic member of the art community.

BITS OF HISTORY Paintings of the Month

Jo Taylor AWS SWS as a Founding Member of SWS The hot summer of 1959 Jo Taylor and I shared a trip and 2 weeks of a watercolor painting workshop with Gerry Pierce of Phoenix, AZ teaching in the Ramon Froman School of Art in Cloudcroft, NM. In those days in Dallas Bud Biggs, a commercial artist, and Reese Kennedy, a high school art teacher, were teach-ing weekly watercolor classes as their own schedule al-lowed. If artists wanted to have a concentrated exposure to well known water-colorists, they had to travel long distances. Workshops were 2 weeks long in order to make the trip worth-while. Jo and I wished we could have real workshops in Dallas. Having had 3 of Ed Whitney’s workshops in New England, I later learned that he and his wife were making a trip to California. I invited them to come to Dallas on their way home. They did, and the result was a series of about 30 years of Whitney workshops in Dallas. Jo Taylor, mother of 3 youngsters, lived in Pittsburg, TX about 2 hours from Dallas but she managed to attend the Whitney workshops. After North Texas Watercolor Society (later renamed Southwestern Watercolor Society) was created she became a board member and attended as often as possible and stayed at my home usually. At the end of the first workshop with Ed Whitney, she invited the Whitneys to come to Pittsburg to rest up be-fore starting their drive to New York. In the early years the Taylor’s family membership in Ferndale Hunting and Fish-ing Club near Pittsburg served them well for hosting the Whitneys and other watercolor groups. The Taylor’s home became the Whitney’s regular stop in route to New York. Jo was teaching watercolor classes (including for chil-dren) in Pittsburg and organized an Art Club and art exhi-bitions in the public library. Stressing the principles of de-sign, she brought knowledge and appreciation of art to her community. A particularly memorable SWS paint-out was at Jo’s invitation to paint the fall color of East Texas and a chili
SWS Loses Two Signature Members Barbara Earwood of Sonora, TX, a leader in west Texas art clubs and an award winner in exhibitions, was an early member of SWS who supported the workshops and the membership shows regularly and became a Signature member. On January 5, 2014 she passed away. Barbara left a large family descending from her three children, two daughters and a son, Edward, who is partner in the family Ranch near Sonora. Doris Williamson Mapes of Little Rock, AR was prominent in the Little Rock art circles and became an early SWS member, regularly attended workshops and earned Signature membership. She was a leader in the founding of the Southern Watercolor Society. At age 93, she was a victim of breast cancer and on November 20, 2013 passed away, leaving her daughter, two grandsons and their families. These two members have been missed in SWS activities due to their health issues. Sincere sympathy is extended to both of these families.

supper was served by Jo and her class members in her home. In spite of the 100 mile distance to Dallas, Jo Tay-lor’s participation in SWS activities was particularly notable. Health problems have limited her participa-tion since she moved to Rockwall, but she is still paint-ing. Her book, Watercolor Wisdom, published by North Light, was inspired by the Whitney teachings.
