Bluetooth
Bluetooth is an industrial specification for wireless personal area networks (PANs). Technology first introduced in Sweden in the 1990’s
The Bluetooth name originally came from the Danish Viking and King, Harald Blåtand whose name translates to Bluetooth in English. He is known for uniting Denmark & Norway
Bluetooth provides a way to connect and exchange information between devices such as mobile phones, laptops, personal computers, printers, digital cameras & video game consoles over a secure, globally unlicensed short-range radio frequency ~ 30 feet for class 2 devices
The Bluetooth® word mark and logos are owned by the Bluetooth SIG, Inc. and any use of such marks by Siemens AG is under license. Other trademarks and trade names are those of their respective owners.

Presentation Notes
The name "Bluetooth" is from the 10th century Danish King Harald Blatand - or Harold Bluetooth in English. King Blatand was instrumental in uniting warring factions in parts of what are now Norway, Sweden, and Denmark - just as Bluetooth technology is designed to allow collaboration between differing industries such as the computing, mobile phone, and automotive markets. The following table compares the available Bluetooth power classes:ClassMaximum PowerOperating RangeClass 1100mW (20dBm)100 metersClass 22.5mW (4dBm)10 metersClass 31mW (0dBm)1 meter The following table compares the available Bluetooth power classes:ClassMaximum PowerOperating RangeClass 1100mW (20dBm)100 metersClass 22.5mW (4dBm)10 metersClass 31mW (0dBm)1 meter

Bluetooth
Bluetooth is a standard and communications protocol primarilydesigned for low power consumption, with a short range based on lowcost transceiver microchips in each device
Bluetooth is radio-based (digital FM) using the 2.4 GHz radio spectrum
Pairing of communicating Bluetooth devices is always required & thetransmission is secure due to encryption. A Personal Area Network(PAN) is created with the pairing
Bluetooth devices use a radio communications system, so they do nothave to be in line of sight of each other
5
Bluetooth benefits
Benefits
WirelessEliminates wires/connection cablesEasy to set up and improves safety and look of setupTurns hearing instruments into a wireless hands-free headset
Low interference
Doesn’t need to be line of sight (like infrared technology)
Inexpensive technologyLess than $5 for the chip
Presenter
Presentation Notes
BT uses frequency hopping and changes frequencies 1600 times per second ensuring little interference from WiFi for example and also making the transmission secure. A pseudorandom sequence is used known only to transmitter and receiver (hence pairing of devices). For eavesdropping to occur the eavesdropper would have to know the pseudorandom sequence of many different frequencies—so very difficult to do.

Bluetooth limitations
Limitations
Power consumptionConsidered low for some applications but in hearing aid industryconsidered to be highDraws approximately 8 mA from a 1.8 volt power source*Hearing instrument example: Super Power BTE draws approximately 2 mA from a 1.3 volt power source (675 battery)
Size of componentsBlueCore 7 chip approximately 4 x 4 mm; similar in size to typical hearing instrument chip*Antenna is required to pick up signal
Size of antenna dictates efficiencyTypical size may be 12.8 x 3.6 x 3.3 mm (.51 inch x .15 inch x .13 inch)

Bluetooth limitations
Limitations
High transmission delay> 100 ms (typically ~200 ms)Degraded lip synchrony if audio paired to visual stimulus (non-issue with cell phones)
Limited audio signal bandwidth: 7.5 K Hz

Bluetooth limitations with hearing aids & Siemens Solutions
Limited audio signal bandwidth: 7.5 KHzSoundBrilliance in high tech hearing instruments extendbandwidth to 12 KHz
High transmission delay: >100 ms (typically ~200ms)degraded lip synchrony (TV)degraded sound quality for open fittings
Tek Transmitter with proprietary Bluetooth implementationusing much shorter delays already paired with Tek Connect
High power consumption and large size of components Bluetooth implemented in remote control (Tek Connect)e2e wireless 2.0 for transmission from Tek Connect to hearinginstrument (magnetic transmission)

Presentation Notes
e2e wireless was the first generation (and first in the industry) to allow synchronization of signal processing information and controls. e2e wireless 2.0 is the next generation of wireless communication, which not only allows high level synchronization of signal processing information and controls in an even faster manner, it also allows hearing instruments to be wirelessly compatible with Bluetooth enabled and other devices for the purposes of streaming complete audio signals in stereo (such as mobile phone, TV, stereo . . . ). ITU is the leading United Nations agency for information and communication technologies. As the global focal point for governments and the private sector, ITU's role in helping the world communicate spans 3 core sectors: radiocommunication, standardization and development. ITU also organizes TELECOM events and was the lead organizing agency of the World Summit on the Information Society. ITU is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and its membership includes 191 Member States and more than 700 Sector Members and Associates.

As you can see, Tek Connect is able to carry out all the functions of a remote control, even assisting in the learning features of our high-end hearing aids as well as the functions of the bluetooth receiver and transmitter. In competitive products, the remote control has either very limited function or an additional device is necessary for the bluetooth transmission and receipt. In addition, competitive devices (remote control or otherwise) must be worn around the neck, as the lanyard also functions as the antenna for the system. This is not the case with Tek Connect – everything is enclosed within the remote control and no other devices are needed, and Tek Connect does not need to be worn around the neck. An optional lanyard is available if patients would like to use this for convenience while on the phone to allow hands-free operation (remember the patient is also speaking into the microphone on Tek Connect while on the phone, so they need to keep it closer to their head than while they are using it for other purposes).

Study conducted at Vanderbilt University shows that this binaural wireless phone transmission improves signal-to-noise ratio by up to 5.7 dB over monaural transmission (Ricketts & Picou, 2008). This translates to significantly better speech understanding on the phone – a use case for which many hearing instrument wearers are seeking improvement.
