Reassurance given following land sale
Deirdre Heney and Sean Haughey were among those who expressed concern following the land sale announcement.
Cllr Heney, who represents the Clontarf Local Electoral Area (LEA), said: “We need a guaran-tee that the needs of St Paul’s School and the local sports clubs will continue to be accommo-dated.
“I welcome the commitment from the Vincentians that €7 mil-lion from the profi ts of the sale will be invested in the school and its grounds.
“The needs of the students and the sports clubs that currently make great use of the pitches must be a top priority in this re-investment.”
Cllr Haughey, who also repre-sents the Clontarf LEA, said: “I have sought an urgent meeting with the developer and will im-press on him the need for conti-nuity and security for local sport-ing groups; the demand that as much public open space as pos-sible be retained; the desire that any new housing will not impact unduly on existing householders; and that there should be compre-hensive consultation with all lo-cal groups and stakeholders.”
New Generation Homes con-fi rmed to Northside People that it has purchased lands at the col-lege from the Vincentian Order.
In a statement, the company said it intends to build private homes and improve sports and community facilities on the site, and will shortly begin the plan-ning process in this regard.
“We have already held meet-ings with some local community groups, coordinated by our ad-visors WK Nowlan Property, and will be engaging with others in the near future,” a spokesman for the company said.
“In particular, we have met with Clontarf GAA Club to reas-sure them about their continued use of the playing facilities at St Paul’s.
“We have confi rmed to Clon-tarf GAA Club that they will continue to be able to use the playing facilities at the school uninterrupted until we secure planning permission, a process that will take some time.
“We will ensure minimal dis-ruption of their use of the fa-cilities during the construction phase that will follow.”
The Vincentian Order has set aside over €7 million from the proceeds of the sale of the land for the provision of new school facilities including a new all-weather pitch, a community sports hall and a trust fund pro-viding for future school needs.
“When construction is com-plete the GAA club and other lo-cal groups will have access to the new 3G all-weather full champi-onship size pitch, as well as the multipurpose sports hall that will be built next to the school,” the spokesman added.
“New Generation Homes is committed to maintaining dia-logue with the local community, including Clontarf GAA, to ensure that the outcome of this develop-ment will be of benefi t to and will further enhance the local com-munity and surrounding area.”

THE company that has purchased land surrounding St Paul’s Col-lege, Raheny, said it is committed to “maintaining dialogue” with the local community following concerns regarding the sale.

Kodaline’s entrepreneurial spirit
Co-ordinated by the LEOs in every county, the competition is the most successful student en-terprise programme of its kind in the country.
Two members of Kodaline,
lead singer Steve Garrigan and lead guitarist Mark Prender-gast, set up their own student enterprise 10 years ago in Co-laiste Choilm, Swords, selling music lessons.
The group members are all past-pupils of participating schools and over 17,000 teen-age entrepreneurs from 370 second-level schools take part annually.
KODALINE, who are currently on their UK and European Tour, took time out of their busy schedule to help the Fingal Local Enterprise Offi ce (LEO) announce details of the Student Enterprise Awards National Finals, which take place in Croke Park on April 22.

Nissan expect the 1.5 diesel, which starts at €21,595, to be the big seller in Ireland.▪
Nissan Pulsar is King of the HillSeán Creedon
“A CAR for the lost generation” - that was the buzz phrase used when Nissan launched their new Almera in Ardmore, West Water-ford in November last year.
The reason Nissan came up with this phrase is because the car, which replaces the Almera, marks their return to the ‘C’ segment after an eight-year absence. In the ‘C’ segment the Japanese company take on old reliables like the Ford Focus, VW Golf, Toyota Auris, Opel Astra and Hyundai i30.
So it’s defi nitely a competitive segment to get back into and also the sector with the big-gest volume of sales in Ireland.
Nissan hope that that they have their fi nger on the pulse and they are confi dent that this new hatchback with gain a seven to eight per cent share of the Irish market this year.
Jeanne McGann, Marketing Manager for Nis-
san, says they hope to recover some of the lost generation with an attractive PCP off er where you can get a new Pulsar for €134 per month. It’s generally accepted that Nissan’s Qashqai is the king when it comes to motoring in Ireland and the Pulsar does share some of the king’s mechanical and electrical parts.
But it’s a much smaller car than the Qashqai and while it’s a big improvement on the old Almera, if you saw the two of them together you would know that they are related.
I drove the 1.5 diesel version and it was very quiet. It was also very comfortable and relax-ing to travel in. My back seat passengers com-mented on the huge amounts of leg and head room they had.
On the drive to Ardmore last November I thought the dash and rest of the interior was too dark. They say fi rst impressions are lasting and four months on I haven’t changed my mind, but then as my son reminded me the interiors of most cars nowadays are all very dark.
The stats from SIMI show that after two
months of very brisk trade the Pulsar is in the top 20 of best selling cars in 2015. The version I drove had an excellent reversing camera. Al-though it’s not an extremely long car it’s always nice to know what’s behind you when revers-ing. The boot is a decent size and you get a ‘mini’ spare wheel.
Prices start at €19,995 for the 1.2 petrol. However, Nissan expect the 1.5 diesel, which starts at €21,595, to be the big seller in Ireland. Road tax is €180 for diesel versions, €200 for petrol. Every week on these pages I say that prices ‘start from’ and really it is a starting point because there are so many extras that you may want or are coaxed into - metallic paint, fancy alloys, fog lights etc.
Really it’s a marketing ploy, which is adopted by ALL car companies to give you, the consum-er, the lowest possible entry level price.
I found the Pulsar to be very lively and the fuel gauge is the slowest moving part; the en-gine in 1.5 diesel version I drove was very fru-gal.

So you want a new car for less than 12 grand?
Make no mistake Suzuki are marketing the Celerio as a city car. ‘The Celerio beck-ons for a drive in the city,’ is one of the lines from their PR blurb. It’s a very neat car and apparently it’s a big seller in India where the selling price is obviously an attraction.
I’m not sure how much it costs in India, but in Ireland you can get the entry level version of this four-door car for €11,995, which is one of the lowest priced new cars in Ireland right now.
I drove a blue version and it was really attractive. A young lady, not my daughter, described it thus: “it’s small, looks cute, it’s easy to manage and to park, my type of car”.
I certainly won’t disagree with that. Two small cribs; there was a little bit of road noise and my regular front seat passenger re-marked that there was no vanity mirror. Surely such an important item as a vanity mirror wouldn’t have increased the price that
much.However, there are several
plusses. Well for the starters it has a very frugal engine and I can safely say that you won’t have to make many pit stops for petrol. You get four doors which open at a 90 per cent angle, all with elec-tric windows. While the boot is naturally small, there is space for a regular spare wheel. And it has a great turning circle.
I really liked the radio controls, two buttons, one for on/off , the other to choose your station of choice. I really like the latter, you can pre-select so many stations, but at times I like to just scroll through the wavelengths to fi nd something diff erent to get away

Renault Twingo takes on the big boys at this year’s GQ Car Awards
USP. Fun, in a nutshell.”The Twingo has now picked up
several major awards including the ‘City Car of the Year’ in the 2014 TopGear Magazine Awards.
The Twingo went on sale in Ireland in September 2014 win-ning critical praise for its charm, looks, clever packaging and inno-vative rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive layout.
The Twingo, now in its third generation, is available with a choice of two effi cient petrol en-gines, three trim levels, including many personalisation options and is priced from €13,990.
Renault’s recently-launched city car is one of just eight pro-duction cars to pick up an award and, at a third of the price of the base model of the next most af-fordable car, the stylish and practical Twingo looks perfectly at home among its supercar and exotica peers.
GQ said of the Twingo: “There’s more to the Twingo than the de rigeur small-car visage and graphics. It’s powered by a frothy little rear-mounted, three-cyl-inder turbocharged engine; an unusual setup that improves in-terior space and adds a welcome
THE All-New Renault Twingo has been awarded the title of ‘Best Answer to the City Car Dilemma’ at the 2015 GQ Car Awards.
from the ads, some of which I know off by heart by now. There is plenty of leg and head room for fi ve adults, but nat-urally it would be more comfort-able for all concerned with just two adults in the rear.
There are two trim levels, GL and GLX. The GLX has extra equip-ment like chrome front grille, electric mirrors and extra speak-ers. Both trims come with Blue-tooth and USB connectivity.
This is Suzuki’s 30th year in Ireland and they are hoping that owners of Suzuki Alto and Suzuki Splash will switch to a Celerio and naturally they would be thrilled with some conquest customers from other brands.
So if you want to get behind the wheel of a new car for less than twelve thousand euro, take a test drive in the Celerio. Prices start at €11,995, while I drove the GLX ver-sion which will cost you an extra one thousand euro.
Last month Suzuki had to tem-porarily suspend sales of the Ce-lerio after a journalist from What Car? Magazine in England encoun-tered problems with the braking system.
Declan Maguire Marketing Man-ager for Suzuki Ireland said: “We recalled all models of the Celerio sold in Ireland since December 1 last year, due to problems with the retraction of the brake pedal. The problem has now been rectifi ed and the Celerio is on sale again.” Make no mistake Suzuki are mar-keting the Celerio as a city car.

DS 5 making an impression from Europe to the Far East
corporates the ‘DS Wings’ signa-ture, which extends as two shafts of light into the new headlamp design.
Like the DS 3, the DS 5 features the brand’s new light signature, with headlights combining LED and Xenon technologies, along with scrolling indicators.
Designed to resemble jewels in their settings, these headlights are a key feature of the car’s front end. Meeting high stand-ards in lighting quality, they also illustrate the refi nement and at-tention to detail of the New DS. Launched on DS 3 last July, this headlamp design will ultimately feature on all DS models.
Alongside New DS 5’s addition-al features, such as the sculpted, vertical grille with the DS mono-gramme in the centre, the Xenon Full LED headlights, a new touch-drive interface and a new range of high-performance engines, the new DS 5 maintains all the quali-ties it is already renowned for.
These qualities include exteri-or lines that defy convention, an exceptional interior and exterior design with refi nement in every detail and the model’s character-istic ‘cockpit’ driving position.
From Europe to China, the DS 5 has made an impression on the motoring public.
It was unveiled at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, with the new model set to arrive in Irish showrooms in July.
“The new DS 5 is more than just
a new car,” declared Yves Bon-nefont, CEO of the DS brand. “It is the car introducing our brand identity. Sixty years on from the original DS, the new DS 5 carries all the genes of DS. Above all, it is a clear statement of our ambition - to revive the tradition of French premium vehicles.”
Referred to as a concept car on wheels, the DS 5 is a unique creation with expressive, hyp-notic styling. For the new DS 5 we wanted to maintain the strong points that are a key part of its identity, while giving further em-phasis to DS styling cues.
The front end styling is a key feature on all premium vehicles. With the DS 5 the car’s face gains even more character and pres-tige.

THE new DS 5 has gained an impressive new front end and numer-ous other revisions that make it a true DS.
