PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE
for events such as our Careers Day and
NAIDOC Day. All of our students really enjoyed
these days and learned a lot through their
participation. They also shone their light
through their behaviour, in particular through
the respect they showed to all the presenters.
Throughout the week I had the presenters stop
me specifically to say how engaged, respectful
and polite our students were. It makes me very
proud of our students, school and community
when I hear comments like this. It shows what
great students we have in the school. As part of
our Positive Behaviour program we will continue
to join with our community in teaching and
guiding our students with our core values of
responsiblity, respect, resilient and safe.
As summer weather hits, it is timely to
remember the importance of being sun safe. It
is important that all students have a hat.
Students without hats will have to stay in the
shade during breaks. It would also be beneficial
if students applied sunscreen before coming to
school each day. The school has been providing
sunscreen at lunchtime for any student that
needs it. One of the exciting initiatives of the
SRC is the installation of a cooled water bottle
filler in the playground. They are currently
working on this project and we are looking
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
By now you will have received our letter and
survey on the school newsletter. I would really
encourage everyone to participate in our
review. The newsletter is one of our prime ways
of communicating with you, our community, as
well as sharing all the wonderful things that our
students are involved in. We also put a lot of
time, effort and thought into producing the
newsletter each fortnight. That means we want
to produce an item that is useful, interesting,
informative and meets the needs of our whole
school community. We are asking that all
responses to our review are completed by
Friday 16th November. After considering the
responses from all stakeholders, the school
executive will decide on any changes that will
be introduced. To allow everyone to have their
say a copy of the letter / survey will be at-
tached to today’s newsletter.
Often I write about the core values that we
teach at Oaklands Central School as part of our
positive behaviour program. As a school we
actively teach students about respect,
responsibility, resilience and safety. Last week
we had a large number of visitors to the school
Oaklands Central School & Oaklands Community Newsletter
forward to having it installed for the benefit of
our students.
Recently I have been asked about homework for
students. This is a topic that is discussed
periodically in the news and by our community.
There are also lots of different opinions about
homework. Research shows that simply giving
students homework takes time but does not
improve education. There are also legitimate
concerns that students need time outside
playing and getting exercise. This is especially
true given concerns about general health and
fitness of Australians. Essentially, some
effective homework can benefit students, but
simply giving a set amount of homework should
be avoided. Our homework policy covers exactly
these issues. Research shows us that effective
homework includes regular reading at home for
younger students. So we encourage all parents
to read with your child each night. For older
students simply revising that day’s learning at
school has significant impacts on learning. It
improves recall of what they have learned and
improves results. Importantly, it also teaches
revision skills which are so important for
examinations, especially the HSC. This allows
students to shine their lights. If your child
doesn’t have set homework, read with them and
encourage them to revise their learning from
that day.

Well Term Four has kicked off with a bang with
lots of events taking place over the first few
weeks. The students have expressed their
enjoyment from the activities they have been
able to participate in and have gotten a lot out
of these opportunities.
Last week, we went to the Oaklands Town Hall
to be entertained by the amazing actors of the
Alpha Show. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed
the performance myself and had a great laugh.
The students really enjoyed the interactive na-
ture of the performance and engaged deeply
with the message within the story. It is fantas-
tic that our students had the opportunity to
enjoy such a high quality live performance.
On Friday last week, we also had the pleasure
of holding our first kindergarten orientation
session. It was fantastic to meet all our new
kindergarten students for 2019 and get to
show them around the school. Our current K/1
students really enjoyed taking our new
students for a tour around our school and
showing them the ropes in the classroom. We
are all looking forward to their next visit.
Don’t forget our 4/5/6 students are holding
two more car wash afternoons, raising money
for the Year 6 Graduation Dinner! The first car
wash was a great success and the kids did an
awesome job washing all the cars. If you would
like to book in there are still plenty of spots
PRIMARY NEWS
available on Friday 9th November and Friday
30th November, between 1-3pm.
Over the next few weeks students will be
participating in our formal assessments to
assist staff in writing our Semester Two re-
ports. Please ensure that students are coming
to school ready to put in their best learning ef-
fort each day.
Next Tuesday, is our Grandparents/Spoken
Word Poetry Day. Our students have been
working hard in preparing their recitals ready
for the big day, as well as cooking some lovely
things to share for afternoon tea. We hope you
can come and join us for this special afternoon.
Finally, Wednesday of Week 5 we will be
holding our Whole School Assembly. This time
it is our kindergarten students’ turn to host and
we hope you can come along to celebrate our
learning triumphs!
Warm regards,
Sally McRorie
Assistant Principal
Stage 1 and 3 Science
In science this term Years 1, 2, 5 and 6 are
learning about gardening and cooking. We have
been split into two groups and alternatively
cook and garden on Tuesday afternoons.
So far in cooking we have cooked omelettes
with Mrs Davis. They were really tasty.
In the garden we have planted fresh seedlings
that we will maintain and be able to use in our
cooking classes. We have used our senses ob-
serving the herbs and dried tomato seeds to
try and grow our own tomato plants.
We would like to thank the Howlong Nursery
for donating the plants and seedlings that we
planted in the school vegetable garden.

Years 4/5/6 Research project - The Swim
This term the Years 4/5/6 students have been
given a research project to complete. We are
following the journey of Ben Lecomte, who is
attempting to swim from Japan to the USA.
Tyral Dalitz, a former Oaklands Central School
student, is a part of the support crew on Ben's
team. We have researched and followed along
with the journey and we have sent questions to
Ben and Tyral. Last week we received replies
from the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
So far we have focused on 'The Swim', the
plastics and the impact these have on the
ocean and the marine life.
As part of our project we need to design and
build an object that could help collect plastics
from the ocean.
We have all enjoyed the challenge and
completing the research about 'The Swim'.

Over the last fortnight we have had a number
of exciting opportunities for our students.
While our core focus is providing lead teaching
to provide the development of life-long learners
and connecting with the local community to
achieve this, we also thrive on the opportunities
we can give our students in such a small school.
Australian Defence Force Talk
On Thursday 25th October we had a
representative from the Royal Australian Air
Force and Royal Australian Navy come and share
information to our secondary students about
the defence force. It enabled students to con-
sider another career option and gain an insight
to the defence force in Australia.
Careers Day
On Friday 26th October the whole school
participated in short workshops to learn more
about future career options. The workshops
included being a chef and making a range of
dips, learning the ins and outs of a graffiti
artist and making artworks for the school and
gaining an insight into skin care and making an
exfoliator. Finally students had a workshop run
by Charles Sturt University-Future Moves,
where students learned more about life at
university and possible options for courses.
Thank you to all workshop coordinators who
made the afternoon such a success.
Dental Visit
On Tuesday 30th October we had the local
dental health group visit the school. It was a
great opportunity for our students to have
their teeth checked and obtain free follow up
service if required.
Halloween Social
Thank you to Maurice and Yvonne Smith who
HEAD TEACHER’S TAUNT
coordinated our ‘Spooky Social’ on Wednesday
31st October. The School Hall looked a treat
with spooky decorations greeting the students
at the door. The students all involved them-
selves in the games and is was great to see so
many dancing and sharing their moves. Thank
you to the staff who supervised on the night!
Alpha Show
On Thursday 1st November, we were lucky once
again to have the Alpha Show perform in our
town. This year we saw ‘Snow Queen’, where the
message was about believing in yourself and
finding the strength to make the right choices.
It is always high quality theatre, with humour to
entertain all ages. We look forward to
‘Cinderella’ next year.
HSC exams and Art Marking
Taylah and Violet will finalise their Higher
School Certificate examinations this week. Well
done to both girls on their efforts. On Monday
we had the marking of Violets major work for
Visual Arts. The detail and passion behind her
work is amazing. We would like to wish you both
the very best for the future.
This fortnight I would like to leave you with a
quote…

On November 5th, Stage 5 students visited
Bonegilla to expand their knowledge of migration
experiences in History class. They looked at
Block 19 and what it was like to live there. They
explored the settlement and interacted with
various objects, games and art pieces.
Throughout their exploration, they saw the
many buildings that remained including a chapel,
the sleeping quarters and the kitchen. They
learned about everyday life such as meals,
accommodation, education and religion. They
learned that 1 in 20 people have a connection to
Bonegilla. Victoria was able to look up the details
of her mother’s migration from Germany with
her parents, as part of the skilled workers
assisted migration program.
Afterwards Stage 5 travelled to the Hume Weir
Bonegilla Report
NAIDOC DAY
as part of their geography studies. In
geography, the students have been studying
about dams, weirs and rivers. The weir was tall
and loud, they were able to see the workings of
the dam wall and its machinery regulating the
waters flow. Looking down from the weir, they
could see cod, pelicans, ducks and other fish and
bird life. Comparisons were made between the
Three Gorges Dam, located in China, and the
weir, such as length and water regulation.
To end an en joyab le excurs i on ,
Mrs Davis treated Stage 5 to some ice creams.

On NAIDOC Day we learnt about Aboriginal
people and their culture. We had a group of
Aboriginal boys come to our school and teach
us dances that symbolised native Australian
animals, we painted the Aboriginal Flag (some
students dot painted theirs) and we were
shown a bunch of tools that were used
hundreds of years ago. These included a
boomerang, hunting spears, bowls carved from
trees and bags made from reeds. It was a lot of
fun and an awesome learning experience.

Careers Day
At Careers Day, I learnt that after high school
there an hundreds of different career choices.
You can go to university anywhere in Australia
or the world to learn and become a worker of
the world.

Information Visit
I really liked the show, it was fun and they
were good actors. My favourite character was
the Clever Princess because she helped Elsa to
break the spell.

The flood information day was good. We
learnt that floods are dangerous because they
can sweep away roads, bridges, cars and more.
People should not walk or drive in them or
they will get washed away.
