Occupational therapists believe that:
You are what you do (Pierce 2003)
You fill your life with activities that are meaningful and important to you in your environment and that this enhances your well-being and quality of life(ACE, 997, Creek 2002, Duncan2006, CAOT 2007)
Occupational Therapists workwith people who have experienced a physical or mental health condition that prevents them from doing the activities that are meaningful and important to them
• Identify how their particular circumstance has affected what they need to and want to do
• Help them adapt to their new circumstances so that they can fill their lives with activities that are important and has meaning for them
The intervention is designed by the occupational therapist using the everyday activities that the client has identified. Therefore the occupation in occupational therapy is both a therapeutic means and aim of therapy
(Pierce 2001, 2003)
Through therapeutic intervention an occupational therapist will work with each client individually to:
Just as a trained dancer uniquely appreciates the patterns of his or he own dance, an occupational therapist must be a true connoisseur of the complexity, richness and beauty of the occupations that surround him or her in daily life.
