THE PRESIDENT’S CORNERTHE PRESIDENT’S CORNERTHE PRESIDENT’S CORNERTHE PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Welcome to our newest OLLI members. Please join us at our New Member Coffee on Thursday, February 23rd 10 a.m.-noon in the Woodbridge Onken Classroom.
I'm looking forward to meeting you. Most of us have joined OLLI for the wide variety of interesting courses and events and the cost effectiveness of our annual or semester dues. For me, OLLI has brought new friends, a feeling of belonging and courses that serve as my brain-GYM. OLLI at UC Berkeley has a course called Become Your Own Brain Fitness Coach designed to en-hance brain performance and delay decline. The class is based on SharpBrains’ ABBC framework (Address Basics, Build Capacities) and includes weekly assignments. The instructor, Alvaro Fernandez is the cofounder of SharpBrains.com, a leading brain fitness education clearinghouse, and coauthor of The
SharpBrains Guide to Brain Fitness, recently recognized by AARP as one of the Best Books on Brain Fit-ness. UC Berkeley is a distance but this book may be of interest to you. Speaking of AARP Laura L. Carstensen, founding director of the Stanford Center on Longevity [AARP Bulletin, Jan-Feb 2012] suggests that… you envision the steps, small or large you can take to en-
sure a long, bright future. Invest in yourself by learning something new. Design your world so that healthy
habits come naturally. Diversify your social network by befriending a person from a different generation…
Note that social science is clear: People are happiest when they feel imbedded in something larger than
themselves & when they are needed. Whatever the reasons you have invested in OLLI, you are part of something larger than yourself. Regularly attending the courses in which you've registered will help healthy habits come naturally. It's a large step toward a long bright future and – you are needed. Happy spring, Pam McGovern,
OLLI President
What's a Facilitator?
Everything you ever wanted or need to know about Facilitating an OLLI course will be revealed on Wednesday, February 8, from 10 a.m. -12 Noon at Woodbridge Onken classroom. Veteran Facilitators, come by and pick up your in-formation packet and share your knowledge. New members, find out how you can participate in this vital part of an OLLI course. R.S.V.P. BOARD MINUTESBOARD MINUTESBOARD MINUTESBOARD MINUTES
The Board of Directors' meeting was called to or-der by President Pam McGovern. The minutes of the Dec. 14 meeting were approved. Gary Oberts described OLLI's proposed collabora-tion with UCI Urban Water Research Center to cele-brate the 40th anniversary of the federal Clean Water Act with a kick-off event for a bus tour visiting re-search sites across the country. A motion was ap-proved for OLLI's collaboration with the UCI UWRC with Gary Oberts as the liaison. The President reported that Elaine Satin resigned as Volunteer Coordinator and that Leah Jordan has been appointed to fill that position. Leah will also chair the Nomination Committee. Jerry Devries
volunteered to serve on that committee. Sheri Nussbaum gave the finance report. The Osher endowment distribution has helped to have the budget break even this year. The Finance report was approved. A form for donated volunteer services was discussed. There is a tax deduction issue because OLLI is not a charity. Pat Linehan, VP Administration, presented a clari-fication of the policy about the sale of course pre-senter materials at OLLI classes. It will be permitted if prior curriculum committee approval is obtained, the product(s) enhance members' understanding of the topic and fees are remitted directly to the pre-senter. Curriculum committees are reviewing a packet of several evaluation forms and giving feed-back about what is important. Jessie Tromberg, VP Programs, announced that the Saturday Travel Talks are successful and will con-tinue with a February program on Angkor Wat. Cur-riculum committees are working on new ideas and subject matter for fall classes. The fundraiser lunch-eon featuring ethnic foods and a speaker was well attended and did well monetarily. Jnana Anderson, VP Member Services, reported a
successful Open House with more than 140 atten-dees. Club OLLI bridge group met with more than 32 participants. The first Mahjong group meets January 24 at Rancho Senior Center. A new member coffee is scheduled for February 23. Plans for a fall fundraising event were discussed. Jerry DeVries, VP Community Outreach/ Fundrais-ing, discussed ideas he received when talking with his counterpart in OLLI-CSU Fullerton. They target newer retirees in their outreach events. He has vol-unteered to serve on the Research Review Panel of the OLLI National Resource Center. Leah Jordan, VP Volunteer Services, plans to call and welcome new members. Harry Levy, VP Assessment and Planning, has nothing to report on the search for a new classroom venue. Julie Hume, VP Community Connections, is plan-ning the spring University Forum presentations. Karen McKenzie, Office Representative, reported that 139 people registered online. There were some small glitches, but the online registration is consid-ered very successful. Harriet Whitmyer, UCI Liaison, has obtained ap-proval to take the Osher Foundation fiscal year 2012-13 distribution, which is important for next year's budgeting. Old Business: The online registration was very suc-cessful. New Business: The Summer Lite programming ideas were discussed. Meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Nila Kyser, Secretary

JESSIE’S TAKE
Film: Purely Personal Movie Tip of the Month: IRON LADY an incredible tour de force perform-ance by Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher, ex-prime minister of England. This is worth its weight in gold! Crafted by director Phyllida Lord and screenwriters Abi Morgan and Harry Lloyd, it is in a sense an old fashioned movie, but nothing else mat-ters except Streep's performance delivered pitch- perfect, beautifully nuanced and totally mes-merizing. She already won a Golden Globe. She’d better win the Oscar for this one!

The OLLI library has several materials in book format. The newest addition to the collection is Let My
People Go by Ela Ronen-Zlotnik. This is historical fiction based on the personal experiences of a Jewish girl born and raised behind the Iron Curtain. As an adult she became involved with a group of intellectuals seeking an outlet for their democratic thoughts. They progress into an underground political movement opposing the Soviet govern-ment and eventually some members are allowed to immigrate to Israel in the late 1960’s. Although this is supposed to be a novel I am sure the author drew on autobiographical knowledge. Lynne Pendleton, OLLI Librarian Joann Burch
