IWIP - Digital Atlas for the Cuvelai Basin
IN COOPERATION WITH INDUSTRY PARTNERS
IWIP – The Interactive Water Information and Planning Tool for the Cuvelai-Etosha Basin
What is the IWIP? The multimedia Interactive Water Information and Planning Tool (IWIP) is there to inform you about the Cuvelai-Etosha Basin with the help of maps. This digital atlas also allows you to access descriptive texts, pictures and other data that help explain the information on the maps.
Among other things, the IWIP offers a selection of basic data and information on the outcomes of recent projects in the region. Overlay functionalities and a cartographic multilayer display make it easier to grasp complex facts and processes. The ultimate goal is to allow everyone who is interested access to this wealth of information. At the moment, the IWIP is available in English and German, but can be extended to other languages.
Please have a look at the following page containing technical information about the IWIP .
History and way forward The idea arose in 2010, when the demand for easy access to spatial information in Namibia was ad-dressed by Namibian and German partners in the CuveWaters project (www.cuvewaters.net). In the following years the Digital Atlas of the Cuvelai-Etosha Basin was developed under the supervision of Julia Roehrig (formerly at Institute for Social-Ecological Research ISOE, www.isoe.de/en) and Mi-chael Lukubwe (formerly at NPC, Omusati RC) in co-operation with German and local, regional and national Namibian authorities: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) and the Namibian Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry (MAWF). In 2014 the Digital Atlas of the Cuvelai-Etosha Basin was renamed to IWIP and new maps were added to show the potential for further development and for transfer to other regions in Namibia and beyond.
The basic software to build a digital atlas is the open source Geopublisher (http://en.geopublishing.org/Geopublisher) developed at wikisquare. With this tool GIS maps and other information like text documents and photos are linked and exported to a standalone digital atlas that can be used on a PC without GIS software.

IWIP – Interactive Water Information and Planning Tool for the Cuvelai-Etosha Basin
A tool for land and water resources management based on the Digital Atlas of the Cuvelai-Etosha Basin
THE IWIP: ♦ One of several regional atlases (Namibia, Morocco, Benin, Jordan/Israel and others)
developed with the open source software Geopublisher ♦ Information about CuveWaters water technologies at implementation sites ♦ Basic maps and statistical information for Namibia ♦ Tool for the support of decision-making in water resources management ♦ Tool for capacity development in the use of geospatial data ♦ Jointly developed within the CuveWaters project by ISOE (Dr. Julia Röhrig), GIZ, BGR
and the Ministry of Agriculture, Water & Forestry in Namibia since 2010 FUNCTIONALITIES AT A GLANCE: ♦ Open source software, no restriction on a wide distribution ♦ Quick and easy to handle ♦ Multilingual ♦ Atlas contains software and data, internet connection is not necessary ♦ Contains and displays real geo-data ♦ Can handle vector and raster data ♦ All data layers can be accessed individually and their order can be changed ♦ Adaptive display of coordinates and scale bar ♦ Filter-tool to display only a subset of data ♦ Hotlinks: defined attributes of a feature in the map are displayed as well as graphics
or images for a specific geo-object ♦ Improved illustration of metadata ♦ Link to other documents like PDF or video is possible ♦ Creation of own maps is simple ♦ Export of data is possible (if datasets are freely available) ♦ Easy to integrate new datasets (with Geopublisher software) ♦ Can be applied for other projects as well(compilation of information, mapping) ♦ Create your own atlas based on any thematic data that can be geographically linked.

IWRM Toolkit: Collection of Sources for Information and Tools on IWRM – A tool for supporting, planning and decision making processes –
During a workshop by the CuveWaters project in February 2011 in Oshakati, the need of an instru-ment supporting the implementation of integrated water resources management (IWRM) in the Cu-velai-Etosha basin (CEB) has been expressed. This instrument should boost the implementation pro-cess by facilitating the common understanding of the rather abstract concept of IWRM. However, numerous information and tools supporting IWRM implementation already exist. These information and tools are closely linked with the discussed need at the workshop, but they are partly not well known by many stakeholders working in the field of IWRM. Thus, we gathered and reviewed availa-ble information materials and tools for further distribution for interested stakeholders.
This document contains a selected collection of links providing interesting information about promot-ing and implementing integrated water resources management (IWRM). It can be downloaded here:
