SUMMARY
1.1. Introduction
2. A Submerged Turret Production (STP) buoy which was floating at a depth of 9m had a
270m pick up rope attached to it with the end floating on the surface with a small lighted
buoy attached. A Tug towing the ‘Haewene Brim’ FPSO ran over the rope and got it
entangled in its propellers. Some of the rope from the Tugs props was recovered but not
all of it. There was a danger that there was still some rope attached to the buoy which
could become entangled in other vessels props.
3. It was decided that a vessel would be required to survey the buoy to determine how
much rope, if any was attached to it. A 111m ROV survey vessel the DSV ‘Fugro Saltire’
was hired to take a workboat (W/B) out to the site and use a small ROV hung over-side of
the W/B for the survey. The ROV saw the buoy which had about 7 to 8m of 115mm rope
floating vertically from the buoy. The W/B was then recovered to the ship. The large ROV
vessel then launched its work class WROV and did a more detailed survey of the buoy.
3.1. Work Observed: The Tug that ran over the buoy rope was well inside the 500m zone
(< than 70m) and all of the rope except the bridal was on the tug’s props. The W/B
was launched by the ships main Knuckle boom crane which had the potential of the
load becoming uncontrollable if the mother vessel began rolling (see photo No5). The
W/B handled the seas well (2m) but had some problem finding the buoy. Once located
there was a lot of movement of the ROV due to the workboats movement in the seas.
3.2. Observations: The DSV vessel managed to make a lee for the workboat and also
positioned itself to reduce rolling to a minimum using the DP. The workboat was
launched and recovered without mishap. The Tidal Forces were insignificant. The
main force was the wind 20kts; this caused a lot of drift on the workboat which the
coxswain had to deal with. The DP current was in line with the wind.
3.3. Conclusions: If the workboat had a radar reflector fitted the DSV could have picked
up the boat much easier on its radar. A GPS on the workboat would have helped in
locating the buoy and remaining on station. Due to the professionalism of the project
crew and the ships crane drivers/crew all operations were carried out in a safe and
seamanlike manner. The DSV’s Man Overboard rescue boat was ready throughout.

3. VESSEL PARTICULARS
The Dive Support Vessel (DSV) DP 2 ‘Fugro Saltire’ is a purpose built, deep water ROV vessel. It is equipped with a 150Te AHC knuckle-boom crane designed to deploy full rated load to 3000m (single fall) plus a separate 10T auxiliary subsea crane with 1,000m fall. 150T line fully equipped with man riding capability to SWL 15T Two Fugro FCV3000 150HP ROV systems are deployed via hydraulically operated doors on either side of the integrated ROV hangar via purpose built Heave Compensated (AHC) Launch & Recovery Systems (LARS) designed to minimize the effects of vessel motion. There is also the option of mobilizing a Lynx OBSROV system onto the back deck of the vessel. A working moonpool measuring 7.2 x 7.2m is situated immediately aft of the hanger area overlooked by a large Deck Operations Room. The full reach of the 46m x 22m timbered main deck is designed for deck loading of 10T/m2 and offers the flexibility to both carry substantial construction spreads and deck cargos and provide a platform with excellent seakeeping allowing the deployment of substantial subsea loads using the 150T main crane.
