Orion Health At HIMSS15
The annual HIMSS conference was held on April 12th – 16th in Chicago,
Illinois and was host to 40,000+ professionals from the Healthcare IT
industry. Orion Health was well represented, with staff from across North
America and around the globe making the journey to attend the event.
The conference offered three days with new Orion Health booth graphics
featuring our leading position in Population Health Management and FHIR.
In the spirit of our Open Platform, this year’s booth featured a more open
layout with six demo stations, three meeting rooms, soft seating areas and
a central greeting area. The booth’s open layout and high interest in our
solutions triggered heavy traffic throughout the show.
Almost 400 leads were collected over the duration of the conference −
effectively doubling our total from 2014. 75% of our leads were US-based
attendees with 12% from Canada and the remainder from around the
globe.
During the conference, we hosted several large delegations including 30
CEO's from French Hospitals, and provided demos to healthcare
executives from Saudi Arabia, China, Brazil, Singapore and Thailand.
Needless to say, demo stations and the three meeting rooms were
constantly in use. The booth also featured updated solution brochures,
product sheets and case studies. We also hosted some of our customers
throughout the event including a Tuesday evening client appreciation
dinner.
Healthcare Scene (health IT commentator) is very interested in the CalINDEX story and will be launching a payer-focused blog they would like us
to contribute to in the coming months. In an article that appeared April 13th,
Becker’s Hospital Review editor Heather Punke included Dr. Bill
O’Connor’s perspective on whether it is the provider's responsibility to
engage the patient or whether it is the patient's responsibility to engage.
During their HIMSS interview, Punke expressed interest in the idea of the

health management efforts. And finally, on the digital media front, Health
Data Management freelance interviewer Katherine Burger conducted a
video interview with David Watson, CEO of Cal INDEX, and David Bennett
that will be featured on the publication’s website in the coming weeks.
On the industry analyst front, Orion Health met with International Data
Corporation (IDC) and will follow up with their Life Sciences team to
discuss precise medicine. IDC indicated they were interested in ‘snackable’
content regarding our technologies in the form of short videos, articles and
training sessions. We also met with KLAS, Chilmark Research and Frost &

e-Visits: Private, secure and digital two-way interactions between a
patient and their health care provider available from the patient’s home.
e-Requests for Prescription Renewals or Refills: Electronic
requests by patients for the renewal or refilling of their prescription
medication, sent to a regulated healthcare provider.
e-Requests for Services: Electronic requisitions from one regulated
health care provider to another for the purpose of requesting health
care services on behalf of a patient.
e-Reports of Services: Reports containing patient health information
generated, transmitted, and received electronically, sent from one
healthcare provider to another for the purposes of aiding in the care of
a patient.

Why did we give the big data engine in Open Platform aspecial name?
We want customers to know about and remember the 'secret-sauce'
engine driving our Open Platform. It’s unique in the market. It signifies a
marked evolution in our ability to process, store and serve all forms of
health data. Built using cutting edge storage technologies and a distributed
processing architecture, our big data engine is unparalleled in its ability to
extract maximum value from today’s data and future proof organisations for
exponential data growth tomorrow. And it’s also hugely scalable – meaning
it can cope with massive volumes and velocity of data when required and
scale back to manage smaller amounts of data too.
This big data engine comprises:
The Raw Data Store – an annotated archive that enables future value
to be extracted from data collected today through a “keep everything”
approach.
The Data Processing Pipeline – handles all of the processing
required to prepare data for each target data space, including
validation, sequencing, mapping, enrichment and semantic
normalisation.
Data Spaces – aggregates clinical, payer, consumer and other
healthcare data types into well-defined data models that provide a
complete health record.
So why did we choose Amadeus?
We wanted a name in keeping with the musical theme of our other “secret
sauce” product, Rhapsody. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a prodigious
and influential composer who profoundly shaped classical music. He was
exceptionally talented - unparalleled in his field in his time, which is what
we aim to be with our Amadeus solution, driving the Open Platform.

engine driving our Open Platform.

The marrying of our analytics capability with this big data engine results in
a far superior analytics offering. By streaming data in real time and
leveraging a modern, distributed architecture to process and store that data
into purpose built patient registries, Analytics enables healthcare
organisations to identify patients with escalating risk profiles and intervene
before adverse outcomes arise.

Next we were getting coffees to settle down and go through Lt Karl's

thereof! First up were Evgeny in the pilot seat and Mike as co-pilot. We
were shown the basics of controls, then Mike took the aircraft up and we
cruised over to the east towards Auckland City, flying over the harbour

Evgeny landing the craft at Auckland airport where we landed safely on the
second pass, while Karl and Antonio discussed genetic algorithms. A
change in program and pilots, and this time, it was Reneta as pilot, and
Antonio co-pilot. The simulated flights with real touch and the feel of the
controls was a lot of fun but given the simulator is a shared resource we
had to conclude our fun time and go talk software (our coffees were cold by
then but it was worth it!).
Overall, we felt that the collaboration between Orion Health and other local
software companies is to be further explored. It provides a sounding board
to discuss our processes, which can lead to improvements, as well as a
sense of community within the software industry.

Through their INFOSYS3345 Business Project, three University of
Auckland students have been tasked with creating a synthetic data
generator for the Orion Health sales teams to use when demonstrating our
products and solutions.
Why are they doing this? It would be a major breach of Protected Health
Information (PHI) if we used REAL patient data information. It is also
surprisingly time intensive to create "dummy" data, however it is crucial that
our clinical software demonstrations leverage contextual information.
In April, the three students presented their project outline, proposed
solution and progress so far to their course leaders and fellow peers.
We look forward to supporting and working with these students on this over
the current academic year!

Consider this; you’re a clinician who has to refer a patient to a specialist.
You’ve done the tests that you think are necessary and you now need a
specialist involved. You refer the patient to a specialist but you hear nothing
back. A few weeks go by and you receive a phone call stating that your
patient has been hospitalised due to an episode.
Could this have been avoided? Maybe, maybe not but you’ll never know
because communications failed.
Unfortunately, this type of situation happens more often than it should.
Referrals are critical for patient care yet this is probably the most
mismanaged. The majority of referrals today are still paper-based, resulting
in a slow and inefficient referral process. The problem with this is that there
is no standardisation, no best practices; the content is often lost in
translation and is illegible; there’s little to no clinical information included
and there are often transcription errors. The consequences of such a
system include many wasted visits, duplication of efforts and tests, and
increases in operational costs and labour. By and large, it’s a drain on

Integrating information technology for referrals can dramatically increase
efficiency. If integrated successfully, your eReferral solution will not only
benefit your organisational budget, but also your organisations’ reputation

administrative costs and the duplication of tests, and create better clinical
