Workdaywas46volunteersstrong,thankyoutoeachandeveryoneofyou!Theclublooksgreat. Thelandscapinggrouphasspentseveralweekendspreppingandplantingnativespeciesalongthewalkwaysandhillsideunderthelargeoaktrees.Lois Van Buren, Matthew Coale, Mary Larkin Berlinski, Nancy Lenz andmyselfdecidedgophercagesweremandatoryafterthoselittlebuggersdecidedthehillsidelookedlikeaniceplacetotakeupresidence. JustasWednesdaynightsailinggotunderwaysodidthevirusthathasnowcausedustostayawayfromtheclubandeachotherasweadheretothepropercoursetoeliminateitasbestwecan.Likeallofyou,I’mlookingforwardtospendingWednesdayeveningsonthewater,enjoyingFridaydinnersandspringracingallgettingstartedagainverysoon.

Commodore’s Report TheshelterinplaceduetotheCoronaVirushashadahugeimpactoneveryoneandtheclubisnoexcep-tion.Sofar,wedonotknowofanymembersorstaffwhohavebeeninfected.Thebackofficestaff(Greg,Ka-tie&Marilyn)aswellastheboardandvariouscommit-teesarestillconductingclubbusiness,predominatelyviaconferencecallsetc.Theotherday,Iputarequestoutformemberstosharetheirexperience,strengthandhopeonhowtheyarecopingwiththeshelterinplaceandgotsomegreatresponses.SeelaterintheSpinnakerSheet. ThereadinessforthefabulousSt.Patrick’sDayFridaybeganwithaconversationwithDJTimpanywhorespondedtothequerytohelpinsomewaywiththepreparationsforStPatricksFriday.DJmetwithmeonFridaymorningtolayoutdecorationsonthetablesandtohangdecorationsonthewallstogivethatpanachetowhatbecameastellarevent.Helpingwiththeset-upwasMarysePostlewaitebutonlyaftersheandGregsanitizedeverysurfaceanddoorhandle. Tofurtherreadyforthatday,Iwasintroducedtoourveryown,DorisWelch,whoisknowntousastheownerofCelticTraveler.WhatIlearnedinmyconver-sationwithDorisataWISSisthatsheisamusicianextraordinaireandthatshehadacohortofmusicianswhowerewillingtospiceupourSt.Patrick’sDin-nerwithsomeCelticmusic.Dorisinvitedthreeofhermusicianfriendstotheclubandforthedurationofthedinnerfrom5:30pmonplayedIrishreels.Dorisandfriendscalledthemselves...takeaguess...takeaguess!IfyouthoughtCelticTravelers,youwereright.Thereweretwomusiciansplayingthe

Picturethis,thetablesaresetwiththeguide-linesatthetimefor46or48patrons.Andthebarwasarrangedtomakesurethatpeopleorderedtheirdrinksandmovedtomakespaceforothers.Musicisplayingandthereisasenseofdelightintheair.AllthisaddedtothepleasureofafinedinnermenuofCornedBeefandCabbageandotherchoices.Totopoffawonderfuldinner,SunnysCateringteasedoursweettoothwithanIrishAppleBreadPuddingwithacustardsauce.Me?Icouldhaveeasilygivenintomysweettoothandeatenanotherserving.ThiswasSunny’slastmealwithSCYCsowetookamomenttoopenthekitchendoorandthefullhouseofdinersclappedinhonorofagreatdinnerandevening.

Atthecloseoftheevening,IhadachancetospeakandthankDorisandlearnedfromherthatshenotonlyplaysCelticmusic,butthatshehasagroupthatplaysBlueGrassandanotherthatplaysCountry-West-ern.Areyouwithmehere?KnowwhatIamthinking? Theeveningwasdelightful.Membersandguestsenjoyedthemselvesandtherewereseveralwhohaveaskedforarepriseevent.Soafterwejourneythroughthewatersofsocialdistancing,etc.wewillcontinuetocelebratetogether.Thankyou,DJ,DorisandtheCelticTravelers,Maryse,GregandSunny’sCatering.

Going Forward into the Future Becauseofthecurrentconditionofcoronavirus,Imadethewoefuldecisions\tocanceltheMarchPotluckGamenightthatVanceLandis-CareywasorganizingandtheApril12thEasterBrunch/Easteregghunt.WhatIrecommendyoudoisorganizeamongstyourselvesavirtualAppetizer/CocktailgatheringonaZoomcall.Theopportunitytoseeothermembersfacesandheartheirvoicessilencestheisolation.Giveitatry.Irecommendthatyoukeepthegroupsizetonomorethatten.

Greening the Club TheGreenTeamCommitteehasn’tbeenabletomeetbuthaslookedatvariousgreeningprograms.Fornow,wearelookingatavisualthatwemaywanttouseandputforwardtotheclubasawaytofocusourselves

andourattentiononourmissiontoreduceandelimi-natesingleuseplastics.Thisisthebeginning.

Just Plain Recycling: Ithinkweagreeasaclubthatweneedtomakeeffortsandrefineoursystemofrecycling.Somehavedeterminedthatweneedtomakerecyclingreceptaclesmoreavailableastoomanyofusaren’ttakingthoseextrasstepstofindarecyclingbaskettothrowourrecyclablesintheproperplace.Tothatend,Greghasorderedafewmorerecyclingbins. LisaandIhavebeenstavingoffthestircrazi-nessbygettingoutside(ofcoursemaintaininga6’separationwithothers).We’vehiked,biked,riddenourhorses,andweeventookAvataroutlastSaturdayafternoon.Itwascalm,sunny,andfeltveryhealthy.Weinvitedonefriendalongaswell.TurnedoutCom-modoreJason LauerwasalsooutwithPatricia J,andashepassedbyheyelledtous,“Sixfeetofsepa-ration!”SuchavigilantCommodore!Iwasunsurewhetherhemeantbetweenboatsorbetweencrew.ButIlookedatourcrewandrealizedweweresometimesgettingabitcloserthanthatinoursmallcockpit.Ineedabiggerboat.

Moms Asahealthcareworker,we(maternal-childhealth)havebeenfocusedontheinevitable,thatbeingapregnantmomcontractingthevirusandthepossibilityoftransferringthevirustotheirunsuspectingnewborn.AlthoughsofartherehasbeennodocumentedcasesintheU.S.,therewasacasereportoutofChinathatout-lined10mothersexpecting(yesIgetit....averysmallsamplesize)andtheoutcomesofthosepregnancies.Soofthe10,1babydied,attermpresumablyeitherinfectedoraresultoftheinflammatoryresponseinthemothercausingcatastrophicinflammatoryresponseinthenewborn;anothermaternalillness(respiratorydistress)promptingprematuredeliveryandtheother8,were“ok”.Sogiventhesmallsamplesize,upto20%ofthepregnancieswereaffectedbymaternalCOVID19illness.WeneedmoredataintheUSregardingMa-ternal-Infanttransmission. Personally,IhavenotseenanystudiesorcasereportsofthisinevitableissuehereintheU.S.Pleasejoinmeinpushingourlegislatorsandpublichealthof-ficialstofollowthisvulnerablepopulationclosely!

Atmyinstitution,weareisolatingnewbornsofCOVID19positivemoms,isthistherightcourseofaction?Nooneknows,butifmydaughterwasexpectingandcontractedthevirusIwouldadviseherthatalthoughitwouldprovemostdifficult,placethebabyinprotectiveisolation.it’stimetoputthehealthoftheinfantfirst..Iwelcomeresponseandconversation!Sincerely

Iwantedtosharesomepositivenewswithyouduringthesechallengingtimes.Althoughourmatchesarenotabletomeetphysicallyrightnowtheyarecomingupwithamazingandcreativewaystostayconnected.The attached picture (nextpage)is of a Little and Big Sister pair FaceTiming while they went for a walk together.Someotherwaysmatcheshavesharedthattheyareconnectingincludevideo-conferencingandsharingmealstogether,watchingthesameshowatthesametimeandtextingoneanothercomments.Wehavealsohadmatchesplayvideogamestogethervirtuallyaswellasdoyoga,artactivi-tiesandhomeworkvirtually.
