Communication for Internationally-‐Educated Health Professionals (CIEHP)
Program
CIEHP Program Overview:
• Schedule: 200 hours over 12 weeks (Sept. -‐ Dec. or Feb. -‐ May) 2019 Winter session dates: February 20 – May 10, 2019
• Blended Delivery format: -‐ Online component (pre/post-‐workshop): 8 hours/week -‐ Face-‐to-‐face (F2F) workshops (2 mornings/week -‐ 8 am-‐noon): 8 hours/week
16 hours/week (min.)
• Instructors: Blanche Kingdon or Cheryl Jerome (plus support from computer lab instructor for online component)
• Pass/Fail based on: successful completion of all program requirements (online & F2F), demonstrated skills, knowledge, and competencies of CIEHP units, and attendance (min. 80% of F2F component)
Content:
The focus of all online preparation, F2F workshops, assessments and assignments will be on Language, Culture and Communication in the Canadian Health Care Context. Skill-‐building in speaking and listening will be emphasized. Topics will include:
• Introduction to Language and Communication • Overview of Health Care in Canada and Manitoba • Patient-‐Centred Practice • Effective Interviewing • Therapeutic Communication • Communicating with Challenging Patients • The “Language” of Health Care • Collaborative Practice • Professional Communication (“Soft” skills) • Strategies for Effective Communication and Lifelong Learning
The CIEHP program is a non-‐credit program; a final report will be issued to successful participants.

Eligibility Requirements:
-‐ -‐ Must be an internationally-‐educated health professional -‐ Must have initiated the process of registration with specific regulatory body1 for
your health profession or decided on an alternative career path within health care -‐ -‐ Must be a permanent resident
-‐ Must have taken an English language proficiency test within the last 6-‐12 months and achieved: o CLB level 8 in both Speaking and Listening OR o IELTS 7.0 in both Speaking and Listening [Note: Focus of program is on Speaking and Listening; however, a minimum of CLB 7 (or IELTS 6.5) in either Reading or Writing are required.]
