Ovid Bibliographic Database Pricing ModelsStandard: Site-based concurrent user pricing Advantages:
– Relatively straightforward & well-understood
– Savings compared to each site buying alone Disadvantages:
– Does not allow maximum benefits of group buying
– Site definition is complex and debatable
– Price doesn’t directly reflect amount of use
O V I D T E C H N O L O G I E S
O V I D
Bibliographic Database Consortia Pricing Models Added Institution Discount Model
– Initial site pays base price for database– Each additional institution pays a discounted
added institution fee Pooled Users Model
– Consortium sets overall concurrent use level– First site pays full price for cc level;
subsequent sites pay single user price– Common discount of 15% if more than 4 sites;
variations give other discounts

Challenges in Full Text Pricing
Addressing primary publisher’s issues and fears:– Declining print subscriptions
– Static or declining revenues
– Increased costs for electronic publishing
– Loss of advertising (if subsidized) Developing workable models that can be
applied across many journals
O V I D T E C H N O L O G I E S
O V I D
Ovid Full Text pricing models Pre-defined Full Text Collections
– Site-based pricing, with volume discounts Journals@Ovid
– Make your own “collection”
– Each journal is site-based, with volume discount (In process): Volume discounts for new Pre-
defined Full Text Collections– Cooperating publishers agree to lower per site
price for consortial volume purchases
O V I D T E C H N O L O G I E S
O V I D
New products - new pricing Size of Site Model
[Applied to EBMR]
– Sites are defined based on size & standard criteria
– Small sites are counted as fractional sites
– Users are pooled and consortia pays one fee based upon revised site calculation
Pure Concurrent Use Model[Applied to Primary Care Online textbooks]
– Sites are not counted; consortia buys only seats
– Volume seat discounts are available starting at 5 or more seats

Full Text Pricing with OpenLinks
Ovid’s OpenLinks Toolkit allows sites to create links from Ovid databases to external full text.
Sites negotiate external full text subscriptions, access, and pricing directly with publishers.
O V I D T E C H N O L O G I E S
O V I D
Goals of the Ovid OpenLinks Toolkit Provide a method to allow academic sites to
integrate Ovid bibliographic databases and non-Ovid full text
Make “live links” based upon citation metadata, rather than link files based upon production processes
Provide tools to allow sites to create their own links
Include pre-defined links to popular full text targets in toolkit
O V I D T E C H N O L O G I E S
O V I D
Ovid OpenLinks Features
Links can be system-wide or database-specific Many target search syntaxes are supported Journal identifiers can be mapped as needed OpenLinks will only appear for linked
journals and for available years of coverage Supports links to HTML, PDF, ASCII and
TIFF full text formats No coordination of links and updates required Can link to other resources, not just journals

Building Ovid OpenLinks
1. 3.
Displaying the LinkOvid uses the record’s ISSN and publication year to determine whether to display a link for the record.
The ISSN, and source field data—such as volume number and initial page number—are parsed from the record.
Link elements are filtered, reformatted and translated as specified for the target server.
The link URL is created and is ready to be sent to the target server.
2.Creating the Link
O V I D T E C H N O L O G I E S
O V I D
Ovid OpenLinks Requirements Ovid Web Gateway Full text target servers must accept URL-
based searches:– Targets must support queries of journal identifiers
+ source metadata (such as volume and page #)
– Targets should support immediate display of full text (or displays from which full text can be accessed)
Link definition process requires registration of site’s subscription information
O V I D T E C H N O L O G I E S
O V I D
Implementation Options
Ovid Online customers register each site’s link requirements and subscription & coverage information via Web-based request forms
Local customers manage link requirements and subscription/coverage information via definition files– definitions can be managed by consortium
– definitions can be managed by members
O V I D T E C H N O L O G I E S
O V I D
Implementation Advice
Walk before you run– Start with pre-defined OpenLinks definitions
– Start with links to resources that are available consortium-wide, then work on site-specific group definitions
– Start with “bundled” full text packages -- groups of journals sold as a unit
O V I D T E C H N O L O G I E S
O V I D
Ovid OpenLinks Advantages
Integrates full text access to a variety of sources from a familiar search interface
Flexible Implementation:– Can be implemented gradually or all-at-once
– Links can be customized for different sites and for different user groups within a site
Make your own agreements for full text content
OpenLinks will be more current than links using production-based approaches
