Hydraulic fracturing, “fracking,” is useto extract natural gas from shale deposiby means of injecting water, sand and toxchemicals into the shale in order to fractuthe shale and release the natural gas within thshale layer. The largest shale layer in the U.Sthe Marcellus Shale Formation, lies within thstates of West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvanand New York. Drilling in Pennsylvania haproceeded Eastward where exploratory welhave been drilled in the Delaware River wtershed, where the water supply of both NeYork and New Jersey are threatened.

study by Congressional Democrats found thin the process of hydraulic fracturing, “oil angas companies injected hundreds of millionof gallons of hazardous or carcinogenic chemicals into wells in more than 13 states fro2005 to 2009.”

In addition to toxic chemicals, a May 201study by Duke University stated: “60 drinkinwater wells were tested in Pennsylvania anNew York for the presence of methane. Methane was detected in 51 (85%) of the wellregardless of whether they were near gas extraction operations, but those within a hamile of the drilling sites had higher levels methane.”
