• Division of Nursing since 1962• School of Nursing since October 5, 2012
Brief History of Graduate Program and Specialties at SU
• Graduate program MSN-FNP, MSN-NMW, and MSN-HSM initiated Fall, 1996.
• PMHNP post-MSN certificate (2003)and MSN-PMHNP initiated (2005)
• DNP with FNP, PMHNP started 2008• DNP with NMW started 2011
Background
• Pew Health Professions Commission Taskforce on Midwifery states midwifery model of care an essential element comprehensive care that should be available to all women
• Shenandoah University established first midwifery program in Virginia led by Dr. Juliana van Olphen Fehr

Cost & Viability of NMW and PMHNP Programs in Schools of Nursing and SU
• Specialty programs (NMW & PMHNP) expensive with few students
• Universities have closed programs despite serious need for practitioners in rural underserved areas
• Students requesting these specialties as their passion for practice!!

Genesis: Collaborative Initiatives
• To insure supply of nurse midwives, Dr. Fehr created collaborative agreements between SU and other universities
• To increase access to nurse midwifery and psychiatric nursing education, she wrote 2 federally funded HRSA grants to meet needs of underinsured rural pregnant women and a goal for mental health

• Few grad programs available in NMW and PMHNP in mid-Atlantic region–NMW: no programs in VA, WVA and MD–PMHNP: no programs in WVA and 2 in VA

Goal of the Partnership (Initiative)
• Initiatives in PMHNP and NMW consist of affiliation agreements with other universities to offer MSN students NMW and PMHNP programs of study
• Upon completion of MSN core in home school and specialties at SU, students are eligible to sit for respective certificate exams

• Hybrid education approach– In-depth immersion format: Students meet
each other and faculty face to face–Distance technology
Win For Patients
• Creative solution to provider shortage• Strategy to improve health of citizens by
access to care for rising numbers of underinsured rural patients with needs for both PMH and midwife APRNs

• Add viability to low enrollment specialties– Higher enrollment: increased revenue
• Increased numbers add qualitative richness to overall (both faculty and student experiences)
• Improved patient access to care in region• Improved collaboration between schools
Measuring Outcomes of Initiative
• NMW grew from 6 students to 72 in pipeline (since 2005)
• PMHNP has begun with the first 2 students starting this year and 5 in pipeline (new since 2011)–PMHNP: three schools –NMW: eight schools

Challenges to Overcome to Achieve Partnership
• Frequent and deliberative communication between SU and partner home schools with admissions, registrar, business office, clinical sites, students, faculty
• Careful advising, transcript review, and student support as student moves seamlessly from home school to SU
• Program of study tight grid with communication points throughout

• With more providers: –more patient facilities will develop–more options for interdisciplinary care.
