Beginning Sept. 1, all Ohio pre-service educator licensure candidates taking licensure
examinations and all licensed educators pursuing a license in a new area will take the Ohio
Assessments for Educators (OAE), a new series of tests developed by Evaluation Systems
Group of Pearson. Ohio Assessments for Educators will replace the current Praxis II
examinations, except for the world languages exams, which will continue to be provided by
the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. Licensure candidates who
test before Sept. 1 still will take the Praxis II exams and may use them whenever they apply
for Ohio licensure, provided they are passed before Sept. 1.
Two aspects of the OAE series will especially benefit teachers:
Convenience
The Ohio Assessments for Educators series offers state-of-the-art, computer-based
assessments across content levels and grade levels. Licensure candidates can take the tests
at more locations and can get quicker results. The assessments will be available year round
by appointment, except for Sundays and certain holidays.
Relevance
The OAE are based on contemporary standards of teaching and learning, including the
Common Core State Standards.
A new OAE website helps licensure candidates determine which tests they may take. The
site also includes testing locations, and candidate FAQs and other features.

You might have heard of the edTPA and are asking “what is the edTPA and what does it
mean for me?”
The edTPA is a new assessment all teacher education candidates at Ohio University (all
other institutions in Ohio and many across the country) complete during their professional
internship experience.
According to the edTPA website http://edtpa.aacte.org/ , “edTPA was launched as a result
of the growing determination by educators to create a nationally available assessment for
new entrants to teaching – designed by teachers and teacher educators to reflect the real
work of teaching, to support the learning of candidates, and to give useful feedback to
programs that prepare teachers.”
Although the culminating portfolio is produced and assessed during your capstone
professional internship experience, you will be preparing for the edTPA throughout all
your education courses. You will be introduced to concepts such as academic language,
how to write lesson plans, assess growth and use data to inform instruction and improve
student learning.
There will be a $300 fee which is assessed upon registering for the professional internship
courses. This fee will go directly to Pearson, which is the company providing the
standardized national scoring by professionally trained evaluators. The fee will begin fall
semester 2013.

Are you interested in getting more teaching experience before beginning your professional
internship? If so, you are invited to participate in an exciting pilot project. As part of this
project, you would be placed in a semester long field experience immediately before your
professional internship. Your field experience would be in the same classroom in which
you plan to do your professional internship, thus enabling you to build deeper relationships
with your students and become more familiar with the school where you will be
teaching.
Both teachers and teacher candidates who have tried this approach have found it to be a
very positive experience. I believe that participating in this pilot project would contribute
substantially to your growth as a teacher. I also believe that someday, and I hope very
soon, that all teacher candidates will spend their senior year in a classroom.
To maximize the benefit of this experience and to make it workable for your schedule, the
goals and needs of each participant will be handled on an individual basis. You can earn
course credit for your time in the field, and in some cases, it may be possible to substitute
field experience for coursework.
If you are interested in learning more, please contact Teacher Education Department
Chair, John Henning, at <[email protected]>
