I get asked all the time, genera lly from friends and family back
east, w ha t I think of A rizona now that w e 've lived here for a
couple years. The tru th is tha t I rea lly wasn t sure w ha t I was
going to fina wnen w e moved, as; I’d never been to A 'izon a
before.
I gfcess I was fa ii% confident ike ff I’d love the climate, and it
d idn 't surprise me th a t the Tsndfs.capetS and sunsets were so
b e au tify . Certainty, the ab ility to spend so much time outdoors
had obvious appeal.
But w hat really sets Arizona; a p a rt lo t rwais the pecp.e--spe-
cifically, the diversity of experience a n d perspective tha t I see
every day. That many o f us some from: so many d iffe rent
cultures and walks -pf life makes liv ing here profoundly mean*
Wgfol, and always inferestlBS-
And it ’s aosoiote ly the case at PCDS. The uniqueness o f each
of our students is simply extraordinary. There’s nothing cook-
ie-cutter abou t those w h o walk the stage as seniors a n d g ra d
uate out into the world. They're alt smart and all determ ined
and all caring—b u t each in his or her © rn way.
I wish you, the Class of 2013, the best of fortunes as you em
brace and ce lebra te the challenges and opportunities of your
new adventures. M a y you all eoffiftinue to explore your own
differences, and seek out the differences in others.

This year has been one of incredible moments andTih'spirafioff, As I
reflect back, I realize that our delightful hummingbirds have become'
an integral part of our Lower School community. When w e stop to
notice the hummingbirds, outside o f the classrooms; and throughout
the garden, we see the beauty and the wonder that a single mo
ment can hold; These brave little birds remind liS tha t size js net a
measure of courage, and they em power us to take risks and follow
our curiosities; They teach us to savor Out interactions w ith each oth
er as they are fleeting, and most of all, they remind us to slow down
so that we notice the joy that life offers to ys each and every day.
I am grateful to the extraordinary teachers and students who have
embraced and guarded these moments; t believe these interactions
embody the philosophy of our Lower School, one in which w e value
the education of the whole child, and I am so’ proud to be a part of
this wonderful community.

Congratulations, Seniors! It seems like it was just yesterday
thgt we w©b» watching you perform in the Lower School Swim

best in you: college careers and hope you will visit us soon!
- Mrs. Etheridge & M r. Majeski:
Dear Seniors,
As I sit and ponder the history surrounding your class in fourth
grade, I wonder, as I am sure wit i f us have, where the time:
has gone. It seems like only yesterday we were in the orig
inal ..ower School buildings w ith the famed “round building"
planning our trip to Canyon de Chelly. W ith improvements On
campus, I have missed seeing you pass by your old classrooms
pn your way to and from the dining hall. And now, suddenly,
you are on your way to b igger and better things.
I feel privileged to have been a part of your growing years
W hether you were new to PCDS in fourth grade or a “ lifer"
adjusting to the increased academic requirements, you per
severed and did w hat needed to be done to meet w ith suc
cess. I remember some of you who were quiet but left your
mark w ith your sparkling personalities. You worked to take
leadership rales in small groups o r partnerships to achieve set
goals and had sensitivity and compqssion towards others on
the playground and in the classroom, particularly speeches,
like, “How to M ake a Bulletin Board," and long term projects
where you impersonated famous people such as Susan B. An-
<fFij©ny that displayed your creativity and your desire to give it
your all stand out. And now, you are assuming the leadership
roles among your peers.
It has been a pleasure to work w ith you, to see and hear
of your growth academically, socially, and emotionally, and
to be asked to take part in this, one of the last mementos of
your life at PCDS. I wish you Well in your future encounters,
whatever they may be.
Best regards,
Mrs. Stiles

After graduating from kinger-garden
last year, these first graders took their
"gardening" skills to a new level this
year. They built and maintained their
own garden with fruits, vegetables,
and flowers. Hard work, gentle care,
and a whole lot of watering led to a
beautiful garden that the first graders
and the rest of the low er school got
to enjoy while at recess. They also
appreciate the variety of tastes from
their harvest.

You guys rocked fifth grade and have continued to do so. You
were a class of mine that I will always remember. You had and
have such personality and creativity. We had a blast a t Astro
Camp, lived through all the Lost a t Sea papers, met Preppy
the Prepositional Squirrel, crafted an imaginative Shadow Ra

Congratulations to the Class of 2013! I have so many fond
memories of your 8th grade year, such as my talks with my
wonderful advisees, India, M aric lare , G arron, Natasha,
Colton and Zack; our fantastic trip to Catalina; G arron s
wonderful Halloween costume that freaked me out with his
head in a glass bubble; and Colton s 5 0 s presentation as
Elvis. Have a wonderful time in college and please come
back and visit!

Fall of your 6th grade year: I remember sitting in a parking
lot in Blythe, California, waiting for a second bus to arrive.
We ate, w e had a dance-off, w e waited, w e ate more, we
sat in Jack in the Box. Finally, the second half of the class
appeared, climbing off the bus through a tunnel of classmates
cheering and clapping. I like to remember your class a t just
that moment, welcoming each other back to the fold. Know
that whenever you return to PCDS, there may not be a tunnel
of us there to meet you, but w e will welcome you back info the
fold just the same, cheering and applauding your accomplish
ments. Congratulations and good luck!

W hat a show! M irac le in M udville was a wonder
ful production held by the middle school students
of Phoenix Country Day. This p lay portrayed the
lives of two simple youngsters in the town of M u d
ville; an average town, w ith average people, and
an average environment. A fte r a re-occurrence of
a deceased librarian, they tw isf time to go back
and see their parents as kids where they discov
er the truth behind all of their parents’ stories. I
would describe this p lay as simple yet complete.
No t many props were used, and the stage set
was just sufficient to complete the play and to set
the scene. The amazing actors, who set a picture
in our minds of the average town, also show the
kind of people that lived there. It was by far the
best middle school production 1 have ever seen,
these actors clearly practiced a lot and dedicat
ed a chunk of their free time into memorizing their
lines and learning how to move about the stage.
There wasn’t a single slip-up and they obviously
knew w hat they were doing and how to run the
show. I was honestly amazed by this production
and it made me hungry for more of the p lay once
I learned it was over. I would definitely go see
this p lay again, and I hope these students put on
another production. Hands down 2 thumbs up!

On a scale of “Strike Out" to “Grand Slam , I would give A Mir
acle In Mudville a “Home Run . The actors emitted an aura of
happiness and the unmistakable energy of a PCDS student. Each
actor Commits to his ar her role, and makes the play a huge suc
cess, enjoyable by any generation from: Student to grandparent.
Ashcon Partovi, who plays the character of Casey Banks, dots a
phenomenal job of portraying the, Struggles of a child attempting
to live up fb to parents expectations. Along this journey he finds
Out that his father, played by Luca Walsh, has reasons lor being
the way he is. Towards the end of the play, Casey has an epiph
any that, in fact, he wants nothing more than to be like his father.

As pa rt of my job, I get the opportunity to talk about PCDS w ith
perspective parents and students—a lot. O ften the question arises;
“W hat makes PCDS different?" O f course there a thousand easily
identifiab le traits tha t set this school ap a rt from the rest, but I find
myself coming back to a single idea: PCDS cultivates and celebrates
the ind iv idual We as a school are not trying to create a community
of like-minded students w ith the same values, assets, or wardrobes.
Instead, we see each student as having a singular voice, and our
job is to g ive that voice c la rity, strength, and confidence. In the end,
I take great satisfaction tha t this chorus of individual voices inevita
b ly finds a harmonious blend as students walk across the gradua
tion stage in June.

you can go! .
- Ms. Treadway
M y first PCDS chapter is closing. M ost of yo ^w e re in 8 th g rade when I arrived. M y first introduction
- chaperoning Catalina and the LAX officer tha t returned Brea n a s purse. Then high school decisions
- some eleventh hour, ahem, Sylvester. The rest of you app lied fo r 9 th grade. We met over aw kward
shadow days. We survived freshman trip - even road rash frpm running, rather sliding, to' r-ieip Sten-
son. You're fop class I know best,d'ye watched you gain confidence, kindness and more. M y wish
for you - fdllow your dreams, keep learning and growing and live a life to be proud of. M y wish for
me - to hear about everything that happens beyond Pur quad.

M r, G uthrie:
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the do o r where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I .must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it w ith eager feet,
Until it joins some la rger w a /
W here many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say
-JRR Tolkien
M y favorite student activities (in no particular order) have always been jazz, drama, and sports,
and the class of 2013 has given us all many memorable moments as leaders in all these venues. I
thank you for the pleasure of watching you all d isplay your particular talents.
- Colonel Coon
I will remember the class of 2013 for many things, but w hat stands out is the creativity tha t flowed
through its collective veins, whether designing amazing Halloween costumes, w riting heart-wrench
ing poetry, draw ing profoundly inspiring a rt works, dazzling the community on the stage, o r soloing
in the smoky Jazz Cafe.

The past 4 years have flown by. It just seems Iffee yesterday
we were all Pt Catalina Island; I can still hear the complaints
about the cold water. Eight of you helped this year's group
of 8th graders through their trip. M any of you were also ffl my rocketry/snorkeling electives trying to b low up rockets out
instead just’ losing them in the desert. I seem to remember a small fire or two we had to put out. A couple of you went on
one of my sailing trips. They were wonderful, such fun sailing

As four long years of yearbook draw to a ciose, |am left to reflect pn the people, the process and the products w e have produced.I have had rpy share of-late nights, last-minulp phbh l shoots and hwh.dreds of hours in front of d computer screen. Even though each
year begins w ith a familiar challenge—to create a book that the communify will chensfofor a lifetime, the tasks that fill the coming
months are quite daunting—hundreds of pages to design.
Like, many artists^ i see this, blank canvas as an inviting expanse an oppcrtun ty to experiment w ith creativity. Designing a yearbook
is a difficult task that includes bringing together the improbable qualities of creativity and timelineSs;|My creativity contends with
rigid guidelines and a strict deadline^,AAy creative side wants to let layout ideas come1 through raw inspiration, while my practical
sense needs the pages done by Friday. These past four years I have learned to balance creativity w ith the discipline of punctuality.
I hope this year's edition contains the perfect balance of a rt a n d y fility ^a yearbook that is beautiful, yet still fulfills its purpose of
providing a snapshot of the 2012-2013 school years, for generations id come.
I have worked with four d iffe rent yearbook staffs. Eacn One has been distinctly different, w ith its o\yn character and vibe. The
Editor-in^Chief has to work w ith arid within the personality of the'team as 0 whoiek<eep:ng everyone organized and on Track. M ost
often, it is both exasperating and exhiiaratihg.-with lifefong memories created along the way,-from the spirited Emily M orazan , to trie fashio.n-d va Shannon M aniey. to the dedicated lauren Cha~en. f be ievc I have truly seen if d ll.ln Addition, when next August
comes o founcH am cUrious to see w hat m y-'label as-an*Editor-in-Chief will be!
I would like to extend thanks tdm y wpnderTuWe.afbook staff. This yearbook is an expression of their dedication. I am truly thankful
for the am czing'y diverse collection of personalities and talents I have encountered this year. A Special thanks tovisy e M oney for
his enthusiasm, zeal, and immense, commitment. M/e could not have produced this yearbook w ithout him. Next yea r as he takes the
reins, I am confident that jr e will create an outstanding, yearbodk filled, with; humjor and beautiful people. !: has been ’ a pleasure
to go throughdhis arduous process w ith all of yo tt'-a process that includes creativity, focus, humor, loss of sleep, encounters w ith
Paradise Valley Police, take-6ut food arid the giddiness tha t comes y*?Th late night deadline a unches.
As a reader of this beak,C hape :yo'„ ettjpy and cherish tljgi memories CQntained Within for many years to come. Please find time
to appreciate all me^hard worK'^vested In this yea rbo ok Each staff member brsSght his or her own talents and creativity to th e
protect. The bqck wcs a b a ted 'By a team of unique indiwdualss A quote by Sam HcsKiris perfectly describes the feelings of any designer:
‘ A photographer w e fttdo a,socia lite-party in New YorK. As he.entered the fron t door, the host said, 1 fo y ® ’y o U r fo ic J iu f© s s th © y 're *w Q r id e r fu l; ;’-yo u m u s t have a fantastic camera.’ He said nothing until dinner was
finished, the® 'That' was a wonderful dinner; you must have a terrific stove.'"
As if4s wfth any Creative proces'sVil starts with the folents and gifts of individuals, w ith each person adding bis o r her own personal
touch. Joq ls may make a job easier, but it is'the artist who makes a difference.
Celebrate the artists you encounter jn your life. If you;do, I believe two lives w ill.be enriched.
With these last t/vords, my joym eybere at Phoenix Country Day School comes to a close. I would like to thank the school and the
