NELSON Mandela Bay Municipal-ity’s newly elected CouncillorsKholisile Frans (Ward 15), Siyab-ulela Hodi (Ward 26) and MthunziMadolo (Ward55), have theirwork cut out forthem - that’s ac-cording to ANCRegional secre-tary ZandisileQupe.
The three coun-cillors have re-cently won by-elections after thesudden death in aroad accident ofcouncillors Non-cedo Ngqondi,Mxolisi Gumengeand PhumezaLose. Speaking toPE Express Inda-ba, Qupe saidwinning back thewards meant thatthe ruling ANCwill be able to useits majority inpassing decisionswithout needingassistance fromthe oppositionparties in coun-cil.
“Without thethree we could nottake important de-cisions as we needed 61 votes to doso but now that we are 62 again, asthe ANC, we’ll continue with deliver-ing services to our people,” saidQupe.
PE Express Indaba recently inter-
viewed the newly elected councillorsabout their challenges and mission:
“The challenges we are facing in-clude unemployment and povertywhich causes hopelessness andcrime in the community,” said CllrSiyabulelaHodi, amarried father of
two from Soweto-On-Sea. The otherproblem, he said, was that of relocat-ing people who were housed in an ar-ea that is not suitable for housing. Healso said, “Our schools have no elec-tricity; this is a major blow to ourchildren’s education.”
Working with the Department ofPublic Works, Cllr Hodi believes ille-gal dumping will be addressed andthat jobs will be created in the proc-ess with the assistance of the Em-thonjeni Training Centre (ETC). Ho-di also urged local businessmen and
women for support.Housing was also a huge problem
facing the New Brighton communi-ties that Cllr Kholisile Frans repre-sents. He said, “The houses that werebuilt before 1994 are not up to stand-ard. Some of them are falling apart.
They need reconstruction,” said CllrFrans, whose experience in workingwith and for the community willcome in handy.
“The temporary structures forPhase 2, eLalini and also near theRailway Line suggest that we need to
move fast in organising proper hous-ing for our people,” said Cllr Fransadding that they will put infrastruc-ture also inBlock 40next to theMuse-um as a matter of urgency. Council-lor Mthunzi Madolo is also com-plaining about the dilapidated
structures in NU10, Motherwellwhich also faces a water drainageproblem especially after heavy rains.
“Those houses are collapsing butwe also have to make sure that weend the bucket system there so thatour people use the right ablution fa-
cilities. The other problems includepoor roads, illegal dumping and pro-viding kids with parks. He said hewas sure that by their working withthe municipality and the Depart-ment of Public Works their problemswill be solved.
