OVERCROWDING at VygekraalMuslim cemetery is behind a re-quest for expansion.
This comes as a cemetery trusteesays they cannot accommodate allrequests for burials at the JohnstonRoad grounds.
Vygekraal Muslim CemeteryBoard trustee Nazleah Ameeroedi-en says: “Families are unfortunate-ly having to be referred to othercemetries.”
They are being referred to KlipRoad, in Grassy Park; Pooke Road,in Rylands; Mowbray; and Swart-klip for a final resting place fortheir loved ones, says Ameeroedi-en.
A newspaper notice has been pub-lished requesting public participa-tion.
Ameeroedien says burial spaceat the cemetery is very limited.
The Board faces a mammothproblem.
Board trustee Mogamat Magedsays they can sufficewith threebur-ials a day. However the “demand isgreater”.
Maged says: “It breaks our heartsto have to turn people away, butthere’s not much else we can do.”
He says the space problem hasbeen identified about seven yearsand people started showing con-cern.
“People visiting grave sites start-ed asking us if there would beenough space for their families tobe buried there in future. Theydon’t even consider other Muslimcemeteries as a viable option.”
Baradien Salie, also a trustee, ex-plains that the cemetery’s populari-ty stems from its historical value.Over a century old, the Muslimcemetery has generations of fami-lies buried there, he says.
People are unwilling “to breakthat tradition” says Salie.
The trustees also point out that50% of burials come from Mitchell’sPlain.
Records show last year alone 381
people buried at the site were fromMitchell’s Plain alone.
The second highest number wasfrom the Athlone area – at 222 buri-als – and the third from Manenberg,at 121.
Assisting “the poorest of thepoor” and their compliance to ac-commodate burials at night have al-so added to the cemetery’s populari-ty.
This Board of Trustees has ap-plied for more burial grounds in2004.
But, says Ameeroedien, she hasproof similar requests have been
made since the 1980s.The land they are now trying to
acquire the rights to are adjacenterven 171553 and 171554.
Zoned as public open space, theerven are on Johnston and Carnieroads. Together these two ervenwill constitute 6326 square metres.
Currently the land application isundergoing a public participationprocess.
All interested and affected par-ties are invited to voice their opin-ions regarding the burial exten-sion.
Maged urges the public to come
forward. He says the board cannotdo this alone – it has to be a “collec-tive effort”.
“The public can play their part byairing their views,” says Maged.
“We know they want the exten-sion to be approved as much as wedo, possibly even more.”
Adding that they need the land assoon as possible, Maged says: “If thepublic can think of any ideas, itwould be a great help. We need toremember the dead also have to berespected. If it is the wish of the de-ceased tobeburiedat theVygekraalCemetery we need to respect that.”
Maged was at pains to point outthat graves will be respected.
Using the grave of an ancestorburied in 1915, Maged says: “If agrave can stand for so many years, then it will give the assurance no-one will open the grave.”
Maged says this by way of dis-couraging anyone from buildingwalls around the graves of theirloved ones. “This grave has stoodthe test of time,” he says. “We wantto educate people who build wallsaround the graves to not do it.”
Ameeroedien says they do reopengraves “after 15 years, but only withthe family’s permission”.
Should the application for the ex-tension be rejected, other cemeter-ies across the city can accommo-date Muslim burials, says TandekaGqada, Mayoral Committee mem-ber for Community Services.
She says the City's cemetery coor-dinator was approached by theMuslimJudicialCouncil,whohigh-lighted the need to provide for fu-ture Muslim burial space as theirprivate cemeteries are reaching fullcapacity.
“There were already allotmentscreated in a number of cemeteries, such as Maitland, Muizenberg,Ocean View, Modderdam Road, At-lantis and Klip Road. Having identi-fied where Muslim burial space waslacking in areas which had signifi-cant Muslim communities, the Cityagreed to extend Klip Road (GrassyPark) for 3 500 Muslim graves in2009,” Gqada says.
“The Khayelitsha, Delft and Wel-moed cemeteries were developed inrecent years and have includedMuslim allotments.”
Gqada says a number of privateMuslim cemeteries are owned byMuslim burial societies or trusts, namely Vygieskraal, Constantia,Mowbray, Wynberg, Schotschek-loof and the Stegman/PalmyraRoad Cemetery.
“Although some of these cemeter-ies are full, the Muslim religiondoes not prohibit re-use of burialsites and therefore some of thesecemeteries continue to be utilised.”

Dear reader,
Like the thousands of hopefuls who en-ter Idols each year, most of us believewe’re stars. And why not?
After all, each of us has an interestinglife story to tell and if movies were madeof these, we would all be stars.
Real life tales aside, there’s nothingmore powerful than having a dream, or inthe case of most Idols contestants whoclearly can’t carry a tune, more misguid-ed. Despite being told in the most candidmanner by the show’s judges that theycan’t sing, the delusional masses return, year after year.
And suckers for punishment, such as I,allow them to assault my senses, year afteryear.
Idols is one of many reality shows fol-lowed by millions of voyeuristic TV view-ers, greedy for full-on glimpses into oth-ers’ lives.
It’s hard to believe that with the adventof TV back in the 70s, riveting viewing was
provided by the sedate likes of shows likeDallas and Kojak and truly innocent chil-dren’s programmes such as Heidi andBlack Beauty.
Back in District Six, myparents were among the firstto acquire a black-and-whiteBlaupunkt telly, for whichmy mom paid all of R450cash; impressive! This meantthat on Dallas nights, rela-tives from as far as WalmerEstate traipsed to our hometo keep up with the doings ofthe Ewings. It’s painful, butI still remember the thememusic to this and other 70sTV programmes; almost aswell as I remember my oldercousin loudly crunching hisway through a bag of carrots while the restof us strained to hear every word comingout of this wonderful wooden box.
Now we are spoilt for choice and con-sumers seem content with nothing short
of a full menu of reality viewing, the fullbouquet served instantly. This is sympto-matic of human behaviour, seldom satiat-ed. And despite the endless options 21st
century technology has ush-ered in, we don’t stop want-ing the next new cellphoneor computer.
The big old brick-of-a-block Nokia cellphone every-one had to have when cell-phones were a novelty, isnow sneered at. Facebookand other social networksites have given truth to theterm “imaginary friends” assome people clock up thou-sands of “www friends”;while at the same time pro-fessing to leadingvery lonely
(meaning real) lives. And when you’ve had enough of your
virtual friends, after a virtual tiff, you sim-ply boot them off BB or FB - no questionsasked.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m a huge fan oftechnology and its many benefits such ascost-effective communication, access toinformation and connection to others. Ihave no desire to return to the days of pen-pals and handwritten letters, but where dowe draw the line? Some people take socialnetworking to scary levels; broadcastingtheir painful experiences on a myriad ofdigital platforms. Others cowardly end re-lationships via email. Then there are theinherent dangers this exposure brings, tothe impressionable and vulnerable.
But who am I to judge when I too havebecome enslaved to modern technologyand cannot imagine being without my nif-ty gadgets and the endless possibilities itbrings?

A WALK-IN assessment centre to helpsolve the vagrancy issue is being pro-posed for Rylands.
Athlone subcouncil chairperson, GeorgeMarch, says if even just onevagrant is perma-nently removed from the streets, it will be “awinning task for council.”
While residents might welcome this inter-vention, the homeless in the area have noqualms about living on an open field and call-ing it home.
Sana Plaatjies does not see herself leavingany time soon.
She has been living in Yusuf Gool Boule-vard, for 38 years. Referring to it as “home”,Plaatjies sweeps, cooks, washes dishes, sleeps, and even entertains on the field.
Plaatjies (58) arrived in Cape Town in 1973in search of employment. Originally from Up-ington, she was a domestic worker for a fami-ly in Surrey Estate.
Living with her employers, Plaatjies saysshe was glad for the “roof over her head” butshe became unhappy with her job.
“They started mistreating me. I became sadso I made the decision to leave,” saysPlaatjies.
“I was not going to stay around and be treat-ed in that manner.”
Failing to find employment, Plaatjies be-came a drifter and “roamed around for sometime”. She then met Hendrick de Bryn andsettled with him on the open field.
Sweeping around their sleeping areaPlaatjies explains it’s not “so bad” livingthere.
“The people don’t really bother us. It’s onlythe small children who are rude sometimes.”
The couple lives off the money De Brynearns from doing “odd jobs”. They also re-ceive food from soup kitchens run on Tues-days and Thursdays in a nearby road.
The field is however not exclusively usedby the duo.
Warming up around the fire – wherePlaatjies’ rice is boiling– are four more home-less people.
One of them is Lusandile Booi (38), who hasbeen living on the field for the past month.
Originally from the Eastern Cape, Booi ex-plains he worked for a factory which madefences in Blackheath Industria.
Booi says: “I was renting a room in LowerCrossroads for ayear andahalf. Thenmycon-tract ended and I could no longer afford to payrent.”
Booi says he lived with friends in Gugu-lethu for a while. He however did not staylong because he was “struggling to find an-other job”.
“I was unable to bring my part financiallyso I had to go,” he says.
At the moment Booi has a casual job, doingplumbing work.
He says given the chance, he would returnto the Eastern Cape. He says the only reasonhe has stayed on is because he can’t afford abus ticket home.
March explains that a team has been creat-ed which consists of different City depart-ments.
These include, among others, law enforce-ment, the health department, and social de-velopment.
March says: “Social development is cur-rently collecting data from the vagrants inthe area. They are asking questions such aswhere the vagrants are from, their age, theamount of children they have and why theyare living on the streets.”
March believes it is important to get thisinformation, so that a “clear plan of action”can be made. “It is difficult to deal with civil-ians on the street if they don’t have any clearform of identification,” he says.
For this reason – and many others – thereare plans for a Walk-in Assessment Centre to
be established in Rylands.March explains that if everything goes ac-
cording to plan, the centre will assist thehomeless with ID documents.
“The centre will be open for vagrants whowant advice about ways to change their situ-ation,” he says.
March continues if social developmentworkers attached to the project see that thehomeless are “willing to put in effort to makea change, provision can be made to reinte-grate them back into the community”.
Considering the situation of Plaatjies andthe rest of the vagrants living on the field,March says that social workers will have tolook at those cases and deal with it according-
ly. “We cannot force people to leave,” saysMarch.
He explains that a “negotiation process”will have to take place. “It is not an easy taskwhich we face and this is not a problem whichcan be fixed overnight.
“I do however believe if you put all your en-ergy into something, progress will be made.
“It also helps that different departmentshave come on board to help with this matter.”

UNFAIR:Terence Masamuna believes itwould beunfair tothe learners. “I canunderstandlearners aredropping outand the schoolsdon’t have enough learners, but a lot of them still want tobe there and to learn so they can’tclose the schools down. That’snot fair.”
CONCERNED:Lindsay Collings, a mother, is worriedabout thesituation.“The reasons forwanting toclose theseschools arenot legitimate. Theyneed to work onfixing the schools and not justshutting them down when theyaren’t doing well. They will destroythose children’s lives by closingtheir schools.”
ON THE STREETS:HeinrichBarendse saysnot having aneducation canlead to a badfuture. “Ifthese childrenhave nowhereto learn they willend up on thestreets doingdrugs. I dropped out ofschool when I was younger and realised my life was heading in a baddirection so I did everything Icould to get a proper education.”
SURVIVAL:JaylanJafthafeelsstronglyaboutthe issue. Hehas manycousinswhodropped outof school andare now struggling tomake a living. “Children need aneducation to survive in the world. Not having an education in thiscountry especially can put youstraight on the streets.”
SCHOOLA NEED:JoanneMaasdorpsays:“Something likethis isvery closeto myheart. WhenI was a child Iwanted tostudy, but my family didn’thave the money. These childrenhave a right to go to school; theyneed to go to school.”
OVERCROWDED: FaidahAbrahamsfeels closing downtheschoolswill resultin thelearnersturning tocrime. “Theyneed to beopening moreschools – not closing it. Most ofthese schools are overcrowdedand if they close then all thoselearners have no choice but toturn to crime for money.”
BASIC RIGHT:James Worsluy says closing theschoolscloses thedoor on thefutures ofthousands ofchildren.“This is probably the lastchance for a lot of children. Education is a basic humanright and if they take that awaythey are taking away any chanceof a future for the children.”
BAD TEACHERS: NerissaBerry saysthe level ofeducationsimply isn’tgoodenough. “TheDepartmentof Educationneeds to educate the teachersbefore they can educate the pupils. The teachersaren’t qualified enough and that’swhy all these children are dropping out. What’s the point of goingto school if you aren’t going tolearn?” Photos: David Mann
DAVID MANN
THE threat ofclosure hangingover 27 schoolshas caused up-roar among Peo-ple’s Post read-ers.
A high drop-out rate, poorquality of teach-ing and failure toincrease pupilnumbers areamong the rea-sons given by theprovincial educa-tion departmentto close schools.A decision will bemade later thisyear.
Some readersfeel pupils mayturn to crime, while others saythe education de-partment shouldaddress the is-sues rather thanclosing schools.Teachers alsohave to shouldersome of the re-sponsibility, saysanother reader.

LIVID Bokmakierie residents held a pro-test march to vent their outrage about theplanned new housing project.
Their message was clear – “Bokmakieriehouses for the Bokmakierie community”.
About 20 residents took to the streets onSaturday to protest against the City of CapeTown’s plans to allocate most of the housesto be built in the area to people outside ofBokmakierie.
Aziza Kannemeyer, chairperson of theHazendal Civic Organisation, says Bokmaki-erie “is not a dumping ground” for the Cityto place other people.
“We understand that there is a need forhouses. However, our community is alreadyoverpopulated as is. By bringing in morepeople they are stuffing everyone into al-ready over-crowded spaces,” she says.
Starting at the Hazendal Mosque, resi-dents marched to the Athlone Civic Centrewhere a housing screening process was tak-ing place. Here Kannemeyer and protesterAlfonso Kayser handed over a memorandumstating their demands.
These included the City’s need to firstlyanalyse the need of Bokmakierie residents,as well as consulting the broader communityof Bokmakierie and Hazendal who don’thave houses.
Florence Boer (63) is a backyard dwellerand says she has been on the waiting list fora house since 1984. Living in Bokmakierieher entire life, she does not understand whyshe has not qualified for one of the plannedhomes.
Boer says: “I’ve been on a waiting list for27 years. My husband died 11 years ago andit was not under a roof of his own. I don’twant the same to happen to me.”
Taking care of two grandchildren, Boersays it is “more than challenging at times”.
“Living in sucha small spacewithgrowingchildren is difficult.”
The Hazendal Housing Project will see atotal of 153 houses built on sites which in-cludeJanSmutsDrivenearKewtownPrima-ry; the corner of Bokmakierie and JonathanRoads; the corner of Bokmakierie Road andBarcombe Street; between 1st and 3rd Ave-nues and Circuit and Bokmakierie Roads, and between Bokmakierie Road and 14th Av-enue.
Councillor Suzette Little says she is sur-prised at members of the Hazendal HousingProject’s Project Steering Committee’s pro-test.
Little says: “I am surprised that the verySteering Committee who agreed on the tar-get area now has a problem with their owndecision.”
The steering committee took part in previ-ous negotiations with interested parties forthe building of planned houses.
She says the “spread of false information”has created division.
“There is a list of beneficiaries that mustcome and fill an application form for a subsi-dy. The areas we are getting names from forthe list are people from Bokmakierie, Al-icedale North and Kewtown,” says Little.
“So I don’t understand this talk about ‘out-siders’ coming to take over. The City has tak-en the target area agreed to by the communi-ty.”

LILLIAN AMOS
WITH the new financial year in fullswing, the City of Cape Town’s electricitytariff increase has become a reality.
Since Sunday, consumers have to coughup, on average, 11% more for electricity.
The City says the tariff hike has been putin place to “construct and maintain” equip-ment that transforms the power supply so itmeets customer’s needs, supplies publiclighting and provides secondary supportservices.
The electricity services department is thelink between electricity supplier Eskom andconsumers.
The City has two different tariff structuresfor residential properties – lifeline and do-mestic.
The lifeline tariffs apply to households us-ing 450 kilowatt hours (kWh) or, as it is morecommonly known, 450 units on average amonth.
Residents who qualify for the lifeline tariffreceive free basic electricity allocations eachmonth.
Those who use on average more than450kWh a month are charged the domestictariff.
In essence, themore electricityyouuse, themore you pay.
There is a sliding scale attached to the costof electricity in the lifeline category, engi-
neered to drive down electricity consump-tion.
With the price increases, residents who fallinto the lifeline tariff category will pay justunder 65 cents a kWh/unit for the first 150units they buy. The City effectively pays forthe first 50 units which are free under the life-line tariff.
If you buy between 150 and 350 units, theprice a unit is just under 90 cents, which isan 11% increase.
If you buy between 350 and 600 units, thereis a 9.9% increase, and If you buy more than600 units it will cost 18.7% more.
The City has urged consumers to buy onlythe amount of electricity they anticipate touse in a month, because excess electricitywill be charged at a higher rate.
It has also urged customers to try and saveelectricity where possible to minimise theirconsumption.
Silvia Grove says she can’t afford givingout more money on bills. “Everything is be-coming more expensive; last time it was thepetrol, then Metrorail and now the electrici-ty. It is becoming too much to keep up with.”
Gadieja Ismail makes soup for the childrenfrom her community every week. She alsoruns a catering business and says the newprice hike will leave a hole in her pocket.
“I have been cooking for many years, andnow it seems my passion has to be curbed be-cause I already spend so much on electricity.I’m going to have to scale down drastically.”
Electricity shocker

Money mattersAS THE cold weather settles in, expected mid-year price hikes will, at best, get a lukewarmreception from Capetonians.
Following the consistent rise and fall – tothe lesser – of fuel, residents are already bat-tling to keep head above water for the basicessentials such as food and a decent roof overtheir heads.
Some, trapped by arrears of City Councilrental units for years, have ceremonially bur-ied their letters of demand for payment beforesetting them alight.
The demands for housing, as well as ade-quate government services in the health, edu-cation and social services sectors are not be-ing met. This is contrary to election promises. There are no houses for all. Education is freeonly to those at “no-fee” schools. To many, re-fusing to admit to diminished income – or out-right poverty – is a matter pride.
While many want to work, they’re not get-ting jobs. The reasons are varied. Globally, at-tempts at rebuilding the economic house ofcards are still a work in progress. Therearen’t enough employment opportunities inthe private sector. In SA, not everyone whoknocks on the Red Door programme for helpgets financial aid. And some people may sim-ply not be employable – they don’t have theskills, experience or the education to do thejob.
In the first quarter of this year, the nationalunemployment rate stood at 25% – a 2% in-crease, says Statistics SA.
The average 11% price hike in electricitywill have consumers thinking about theirpockets before flicking that switch. And railcommuters are already nursing the pain ofprice hikes ranging from R1 extra for singletickets to up to R42 more for monthly tickets.
There are many Capetonians living in ex-pensive properties, but have less disposableincome. For them, the simple act of movinghouse is costly. It is not just a simple matterof relocating to a cheaper residence – or evenrenting – as this, too, comes at a higher price.
It is a case of too expensive to live, too ex-pensive to die.

INTERNATIONAL Day against DrugAbuse and Illicit Trafficking on Tuesdaywas established by the UN general assem-bly in 1987.
It serves as a reminder of the goalsagreed to by member states of creating aninternational society free of drug abuse.
South Africans have been found guiltyof being drug mules in various incidentsrecently.
In Cape Town, where the drug pandem-ic has grown, Mayor Patricia de Lillelaunched the City’s Alcohol and Drug Pre-vention Programme.
It took place at the Proteaville Recrea-tion Centre in Bellville South, wheremore than 1 200 youths at risk were busedin and given information focused on pre-vention and alternatives to substanceabuse.
The campaign slogan Be smart, Don’tStart was the name of the rap jingle re-corded by De Lille, under the guidance ofpopular rap artist DJ Ready D and Khay-elitsha hip hop artist, Kanyi Mavi.
The programme is imperative amidfears of youths – especially those withworking parents – being tempted bydrugs during the winter school holidays.
With seven visible community policingsector forums under his command, Nyan-ga police Cluster Commander Major Gen-eral Robert Robberts launched a series of
public meetings or imbizos. These were held in, among others, Ath-
lone, Kenwyn, Rondebosch East,Lansdowne, Manenberg, Gugulethu andLanga.
The aim is to engage all stakeholders –including law enforcement agencies likethe Metro and traffic police; school com-munities, educators, learners and par-ents; faith-based and civic organisations;crèches; residents and businesses – toparticipate positively in discussing anti-crime strategies and current trends incriminal activities.
During question-and-answer sessionsthe community has the opportunity tovoice their grievances and comments di-rectly to senior police management.
When previous national police commis-sioners Jacki Selebi and Bheki Cele dis-played a poor public image through theirmisconduct and subsequent dismissal, the imbizos and the appointment of newNational Police Commissioner GeneralRiah Phiyega is welcome.

COMMERCE will never permit the demise ofChristmas or Easter.
It is commerce that keeps these holidays go-ing – not the church.
The day of Ascension was removed becauseit had no real commercial value, it was seenas just a holiday. Admittedly, a small percent-age of people went to church.
There are seven ANC holidays: HumanRights Day, Freedom Day, Workers’ Day,Youth Day, Women’s Day, Heritage Day andDay of Reconciliation.
None have any commercial value. It is obvious, therefore, which days should
go.RALPH

AFTER 10 years a single mother has de-cided to once again hit the books andcomplete her matric.
Natasha George (30) from Kewtown has re-cently rewritten two subjects which shefailed in her final Grade 12 exams.
As an unemployed and single mother to afour-year-old girl, George had no money fornight schooling or tutoring.
She however refused to let this obstacle getin her way.
Deciding to do it on her own, George re-wrote English and Afrikaans in May andJune and now anxiously awaits her results.
George says the decision to return to herstudies was based solely on her daughter,Treston-Tyler.
Referring to her daughter as her “inspira-tion”, George explains she wants to give herchild a “better life”.
George says: “I realised I needed to get myMatric certificate so I can study further.Once that’s done I want to secure a good joband give my child the life she deserves.”
Fully aware that completing her matricwas going to be challenging, George says it’sall about the proper attitude.
“I knew it wasn’t going to be easy,” shesays.
“But I believe firmly if you put your heart, mind and soul into something, it can bedone.”
With this resolve George went to the De-partment of Education and told them shewanted to rewrite her exams.
There she was given forms to fill in anda copy of her exam schedule was then postedto her house.
“Most people don’t realise that finishingyour Matric is free, if you study on your own.All you need is a R60 to pay for your Matriccertificate if you pass.”
Returning to her former school, Garlan-dale High, George asked for assistance.
She says the school was helpful and loanedher the necessary study materials. The restwas up to her.
Living in a house with seven relatives ,George found studying “difficult at times”.
“Late night was the only time I could studyin peace.
“But I didn’t want to disturb anyone byleaving lights on, so I would use the light theTV made to read over my notes.”
Keeping fingers crossed, George says get-ting her certificate would “open doors” toendless possibilities.
“If all goes according to plan and my re-sults are positive, I would like enrol at theUniversity of the Western Cape,” she says.
Her dream is to study business manage-ment and one day manage her own businesswhere she can employ people and pay thema “decent salary”.
“People need to think about the future,”says George.
“Good things come to those who wait, butthat does not mean you must donothing while you are waiting.
“My daughter gave me boththe strength and courage.Where before, I had none.
“I owe her this and so muchmore.”

RAIL commuters are being hit in thepocket as monthly train fares have goneup.
Athlone commuters are among those to feelit the most. They have to fork out an extraR16 for MetroPlus monthly tickets from toCape Town. That means from this month toDecember they will have paid a total of R96more to get to the city on first class.
Metro commuters from Crawford, Heide-veld and Lansdowne have to budget for R12more on train fares.
The price hike came into effect on Sunday.Sound engineering student Kenneth Moko-
atsi catches the train from Retreat to the city
each day. This MetroPlus commuter paid R200 for a
monthly ticket, but he now has to fork out anadditional R16.
Mokoatsi says: “It puts more pressure onthe average working person. Travelling eve-ry day is something you can’t avoid. Peopleare struggling financially already and relyheavily on the trains.”
The option of using taxis, he says, wouldcome at a higher price.
“The average person earning a minimumwage, such as cashiers and petrol attendants, will be some of those hardest hit by the endof the discount,” says Mokoatsi.
He was referring to a 15% Metrorail dis-count for monthly ticket holders from Aprilto June. The price hike would have set in on
1 April, but labour federations negotiated fora delay in the increase.
Mokoatsi says the increase will “cut intoother costs, such as food and clothing”.
Duncan Hanekom, an electrician, com-mutes daily from Retreat to Wynberg.
Hanekom says: “I am not happy with theMetrorail service and I know other people arenot happy either. The train is always late orfull because of carriages that are short.”
He believes commuters will be upset withthe increase. “I don’t know if they will usethis extramoney to fix the trains,” saysHane-kom. “We will have to wait and see.”
He added that people who earn weekly wag-es will feel the increase more.
Metrorail marketing and communicationsmanager Riana Scott says: “Monthly tickets
valid from July onwards will revert to theoriginal increase, irrespective of the datepurchased.”

THE DAVE Spence Memorial 10 km race presented by the RCSGugulethu Athletic Club which forms part of Western ProvinceAthletics Powerade League series will take place will take placeon Sunday at the NY49 Stadium in Gugulethu.
According to organiser Marshall Moiloa, the popular townshiprace was started three years after their celebrated coach DaveSpence passed away in 2009.
“Dave used to be a coach and mentor not only for me, but manytalented young athletes from the townships. He was the one whourged me to start up the club. He put in a lot of time and effortand played a key role in the establishment of the Gugulethu Athlet-ic club. It’s great that his legacy can live on with a race that isheld in his memory,” Moila said proudly.
“A lot of people were previously scared to come into the town-ships. But I think that kind of stereotypical thinking has changeddrastically in recent times. We are expecting a huge turnout thisyear because the race forms part of WPA’s Powerade League se-ries.
“The race starts at 07:30 and the 4.2 km fun run at O7:35 about150m from the NY49 Stadium next to the Gugulethu Mall. It’s runover a fast and flat course and is perfect for runners aiming fora personal best time.
“ At Manenberg police station the runners will turn left atDuinefontein Road past the Nyanga Junction Shopping Centre. The route then takes at left turn atLansdowne road over the bridgethrough the township and back to thefinish at the NY49 Stadium. We havedecided to make the cut-off time forthe 10km is two and a half hours toaccommodate the walkers who are al-so welcome,” explained Moila.
Registration will take place from05:45 - 07:00. Entry for the 10km is R35for licenced athletes.
Temporary licences cost R20. Thefirst 1 000 finishers will get medals.

Relegationwoes for Santos
TASMIN CUPIDO
NO ANNOUNCEMENTS of terminationsof contracts has been made at Engen San-tos after they were relegated from thePremier Soccer League (PSL) the week-end.
This according to team manager YusufGester, who stressed that the club will hon-our all contracts of players and staffers.
The People’s Team find themselves in theNational First Division (NFD) after a 4-3 lossto fellow Cape side Chippa United in the finalrelegation-promotion playoff match atPhilippi Stadium on Saturday. It is the firsttime Santos will play in this league after en-tering the PSL in the 1996/1997 season.
Santos has had a tough season for theLansdowne-based side, after only winningseven froma total of 30 leaguematches – theylost 17 and drew six. Former coach BoebieSolomons was also sacked December.
Gester tells People’s Post that the mood –in both the change rooms and the office – af-ter the loss was “tough”. “It was very quietand we didn’t speak to them about the per-
formance – everyone was obviously deject-ed,” he says.
“We respected the silence of the playersand let it be. We really wanted to win; goinginto the match we knew what was at stake,In the end the match was really close.”
Rumours that coach Mart Nooij will leavethe club has also been dispelled. “All playersand staffers are contracted with the club andwe will honour these contracts,” he says.
“We however cannot determine whetherthe players and coaching staff will be ap-proached by other clubs. It’s football, its thenature of the game.”
The squad and most office staffers havebeen given a break before they re-group forpre-season training and plans.
Meanwhile, Chippa United has been wel-comed into the PSL by CEO Stan Matthews.
“This is a great achievement by ChippaUnited following what has been an impres-sive run both in the NFD and subsequentlyin the playoffs. They have earned their place.I would like to take this opportunity to con-gratulate the club management, the coach-ing staff, the players and their fans forachieving this remarkable feat,” Matthews
says.“Judging from the excitement and passion
that I saw from their fans in Philippi today, there is no doubt in my mind that ChippaUnited will enjoy great support from the foot-ball family.”
