MANENBERG
Youth destroy daycare
CHEVON BOOYSEN
@ChevonBooysen
D
elinquent youngsters are the cause of
much exasperation at a Manenberg
crche.
A boy of only eight was found vandalising
parts of the Manenberg Pre-primary facility
in Thames Avenue recently. He and a teen-
ager were caught red-handed.
Principal Sarah Petersen says she has
struggled with vandalism at her school for
many years.
They have stolen all our drain covers al-
ready. There is a gaping hole in the fencing
after they stole a few palisade slots, Peter-
sen says.
The incidents have had a huge impact on
the facility asPetersen says theyhave to con-
stantly tell people to use another way
through.
They come fromeither side of the facility,
wanting to pass through, and we cannot
have that. We need our children to be safe
at all times and cant just have people pass-
ing through the premises, she adds.
According to Petersen the incidents esca-
lated to such an extent that she had some of
the windows welded closed.
We were afraid that they would come
back to the premises and steal more copper
fittings in one section of the crche which
we currently do not use. As they were about
to startwelding, themen checked inside that
there was no-one and they found two boys
one aged eight and the other fourteen hid-
den inside, she says.
Petersen says she has had continuous
problems with vandalism for years.
It has been going on for so many years
andwe are just so tired of all of this.We have
become so despondent after all these inci-
dents, Petersen continues.
We have reported so many times, but
what is the use if nothing comes of it? You
report every time something happens but
nothing comes of the cases, she says.

Medics targeted for worthless tablets
NICOLE MCCAIN
@nickymccain
A
new technology rolled out in ambulan-
ces across the city is making emergency
medics a target for crime.
This as three sources in the industry, who
do not want to be identified as they are not
contractually permitted to speak to the me-
dia, claim that robberies and attacks have
spiked over the last few months, especially
in areas such as Mitchells Plain, Manen-
berg, Hanover Park and Khayelitsha.
They believe the spike coincides with the
installation of tablet devices in ambulances,
which linkmedics to the call centre and pro-
vide directions to the emergency.
Some medics who have been held up have
even been asked to hand over the tablets,
sources say.
Useless outside ambulances
The tablets, according to a source with in-
dustry knowledge, have been installed in a
way that makes them impossible to re-
move from the ambulances.
The tablets are also locked and will only
work on the health departments system,
and are useless for any other user.
The installation of the devices, referred to
asMDTs, cost about R300m, the source says.
Medics have reportedly raised their con-
cerns with management, but have received
no reaction. They are now calling for imme-
diate action to be taken, to inform the com-
munity that the devices are not removable
and are not useable outside the ambulance.
Sources say the device, which is mounted
above the dashboard, is clearly visible at
night. The system also updates continuous-
ly, and can be heard beeping from outside
the ambulance.
They say in some areas, medics even
choose to use ambulances in which the devi-
ces have not yet been installed or switch it
off.
They say no education has taken place in
communties to inform the general public of
the function of the MDT devices.
Added pressure
The increase in attacks has left medics
fearful, a source confirms, with many al-
ready expected to attend to patients in areas
they feel are unsafe or where gang violence
is prevalent. We already have the pressure
of having to respond to as many calls as pos-
sible. Its nowbecoming just a job andwe are
losing our passion, he says.
The department of health refused to con-
firm the existance of the MDT devices, say-
ing to do so could make ambulances more
of a target. They declined to comment fur-
ther.
FROM PAGE 1
Petersenbelieves caseshave fallen through
because the community is too afraid to
come forward with information that could
lead to the successful arrests of the crimi-
nals. They are too scared to pass informa-
tion to the police. This makes it even more
difficult, she says.
On the dayPeoples Post visited the facili-
ty, a staff member mentioned that another
burglary had taken place evenmore recent-
ly. They tried to gain access through one
of the windows at the babies section. They
couldnt take anything, however, because
most of the goods are either already stolen
or packed away, she says.
Petersen says a good Samaritan has
heard about their plight tomake the school
safer.
DrRandallOrtell,whohails fromManen-
berg, heard about the struggle at the crche
and decided to rope in the help of contrac-
tors completing work at another school in
the area. Hemanaged to get the contractors
to donate some of their off-cut material to
the crche so that they may secure the
premises.

T
hree men were arrested on Monday last
week when they did not want to own up
to whose unlicensed firearm the police
found.
The men were arrested in a wendy house
in Ottery, says Lansdowne police spokes-
person Sergeant Nkululeko Mnyaka.
Three men, aged 31, 38 and 54, were ar-
rested for the possession of an unlicensed
firearm. After receiving a tip-off Warrant
OfficerGregoryGrey and the Cape TownK9
unit went to conduct a search in the wendy
house in a backyard in Becott Road, he
says.
Next to bed
He adds one suspect was arrested in the
house. One suspect, the owner, was inside
in the house when the officer arrived and
the other two were standing outside. After
being granted permission [to search the
home], a .38 special firearm was found next
to the bed on the ground. No-one wanted to
account for the firearm, not even the owner
of the wendy house, Mnyaka says.
Mnyaka adds the local criminal record
centre was on the scene to check and collect
the firearm.
It was found that the firearm was stolen
during a house break-in in Gauteng, Mny-
aka explains.
The suspects were arrested on charges of
possession of an unlicensed firearm and ap-
peared in court on Wednesday last week.
Nabbed in stolen car
In a separate incident another three sus-
pectswere arrested for the possession of sto-
len property after they were found with a
stolen car on the corner of Blanken andWa-
terloo roads.
On Sunday 12 July at 06:47 Kenwyn resi-
dents spotted a red Toyota Conquest with
three occupants, twomenandawoman.The
vehicle had no licence disc. The Lansdowne
police went to the scene and checked the ve-
hicle and it was discovered that the vehicle
had been stolen in the Muizenberg area,
Mnyaka says.
Mnyaka adds that one resident explained
the suspects were attempting to steal anoth-
er car at a mosque.
The twomen, aged 21 and 25, and thewom-
an, aged 23,were arrested andwill face char-
ges of possession of stolen property and at-
tempted theft of a car.
He adds they appeared in court on the
Tuesday after being arrested.
The stolen vehicle was taken to Bellville
South for fingerprints.
Station commander Colonel Jan Alexan-
der applauds the members of the communi-
ty for being spot-on to ensure that their com-
munity is safe. He also encourages them to
participate in policing activities, aiding to
fight crime and criminal activities in their
respective areas, Mnyaka says.
Murder
In another incident, Mnyaka says, a 32-
year-old man was found shot and killed in
Muller Road at Aylesbury Place, Lans-
downe on Sunday 12 July at 20:10.
The Lansdowne police were called to a
shooting incident. According to the eyewit-
ness the deceased was chased by two un-
known suspects shooting at him and run-
ning up the stairs of flats. After he fell down
the suspects ran away towards Becott Road
andclimbed intoawhitevehicle and fled the
scene in the direction of Ottery, he says.
Mnyaka confirms about 20 cartridges
were found on the scene and a case of mur-
derwas opened for investigation.Noarrests
have beenmade at this stage and themotive
behind the killing is unknown.

T
he provincial government wants to hon-
our the legacy of former president Nel-
sonMandela by developing a tourism route
which traces his journey in the province.
Alan Winde, provincial minister of eco-
nomic opportunities, says it is part of a se-
ries of heritage tourism proposals to boost
the provinces growth.
The proposal comes from South African
Tourisms mobile app, which is based on a
map of Madiba-inspired tourism attrac-
tions.
The map was launched last year to en-
courage local and international tourists to
walk in the footsteps of Madiba. We hope
these initiatives will offer an authentic ex-
perience to visitors, allowing them to expe-
rience a piece of the Western Capes rich
cultural heritage, he says.
The proposal is to develop signage for the
Madiba route, which will highlight cultur-
ally significant sites in the province,Winde
explains.
It is our goal to develop clear signage for
theMadiba route so tourists are able to easi-
ly navigate to the different sites. We will
work with local and national tourism au-
thorities to market the route. At this stage
this is a proposal, and we will engage the
relevant stakeholders. Collaboration with
key roleplayers is key to ensure the
projects success, he says.
The proposed Mandela journey will be
made up of Robben Island, Pollsmoor pris-
on, Drakenstein correctional services, City
Hall and Parliament.
The proposal will be included in the ac-
tion plan aimed at growing the tourism in-
dustry. It will be submitted for approval
next month.

A
few of Cape Towns di-
vas will be on stage at
the Joseph StoneAuditori-
um for a special once-off
performance on Saturday
1 August.
Theyll be performing in
Kat Gilardis Divas one
night only, a cabaret show
of drag queens lip-synch-
ing.
The annual charity con-
cert is the brainchild of
Kat, who grew up in
Mitchells Plain and now
lives in Rondebosch East.
IwonMissGayWesternCape in
2010 andas the titleholderyouhave
to come up with a fundraising or
awareness concept, she explains.
Considering there were already
many pageants on offer, Kat decid-
ed to instead do something she
really enjoyed.
Creativity
Cabaret or lip-synching de-
serves the respect of an art form as
it was not viewed like that.
Kat explains that theres a lot of
effort, energy and creativity that
goes into preparing a song to per-
form.
She decided to create a concert to
showcase Cape Towns talent on
one stage to raise funds and edu-
cate local communities.
We are not just boys or men in
dresses but men with talent and
creativity with amazing personali-
ties and good souls.
Funds raised at the concert will
go to the Miss Gay Western Cape
competition. They run soup kitch-
ens and finalists of the competition
visit old-age and childrens homes.
My team and I at Miss Gay
Western Cape have no financial
backing, Kat points out, adding
that they welcome any contribu-
tions to help themwith their chari-
ty work.
Kat says the audience at this
years Divas one night only show
can expect a bigger and
better production than ev-
er before. The audience
will definitely be in for an
amazing show this year.
Big names
Most of the performers
involved are seasoned cab-
aret artists, but there will
also be some new talent
who made it through an
audition process.
Some of the names on
stage include Manila von
Tees, Vida Fantabisher,
Anastacia Khan, Angel
Lalamore, Dayana Lima
and 3D (ThreeDivas),
wholl be performing hits by divas
like Patti Labelle, Whitney Hous-
ton, Mariah Carey, Tina Turner,
Ariana Grande and Madonna.
Heart 104fms Irma G will be the
MC for the evening.
Kat says the show has become a
true community event with some-
thing for everybody on stage. She
also invites the audience to join the
stars at the concerts after-party at
West End in Rylands.
V Tickets for Divas one night only on Satur-
day 1 August at 19:30 for 20:00 cost R100
each and are available from Computicket.

he City of Cape Town will give a total of
R2m to community organisations that
help residents.
Community organisationsworking in the
Citys areas of focus can apply for a portion
of the funding now. The policy allows for
funding to be made available to external or-
ganisations to help deliver services in the
Citys area of responsibility, to enable com-
munity development.
The City has an established grant-in-aid
policy, but this is the first time that the so-
cial development and early childhooddevel-
opment directorate is disbursing the funds.
Our directorate is only a few years old
and so until now our focus has been on get-
ting our internal policies, process and pro-
grammes up and running, said Suzette Lit-
tle, mayoral committee member for social
development and early childhood develop-
ment.
Community organisationsworking in the
areas of early childhood development,
street people, substance abuse, youth devel-
opment, vulnerable groups and poverty al-
leviation can apply for funding. The mini-
mumamount per project is R100 000 and the
applications need to include a description
of the project and a business plan.
We are bound by legislation to do proper
checks and balances and to ensure that the
funds are spent wisely. I am excited about
the prospect of empowering organisations
to help us change the social fabric in our
communities where the need is greatest,
adds Little.
Application forms for grants are availa-
ble at the various social development and
early childhood development district offi-
ces.

We hear of people taking the law into their own hands
to deal with criminals, more often these days.
Andwhile not only the hardened criminals, but also the
petty thieves are punished for their crimes by ordinary
members of the community fed up by a lack of police
action, very often vigilante justice becomes more than
just a simple hiding.
Recently, a suspectedmurderer paidwith his livewhen
residents of Kalkfontein decided to take the law into their
own hands.
The reason? The community distrusts the police.
Theyalso complain about the lackof policing in their area
as is the case with other crime ridden areas across the
Cape.
In a separate incident earlier thisweek, nine foreigners
and a South African were robbed at the bottom of Lions
Head in Cape Town.
When the victims chased the criminals after the rob-
bery, one called the SouthAfrican emergency number 112
without success.
He phoned his mother, who tried phoning the 112 emer-
gency number as well as 10111 for over 20 minutes. When
she finally got through to the Cape Town Central police
station, the police officer on the phone did not know
where Lions Head is. The victims gave up after waiting
on help to arrive for 35.
Although the above incidents are not related , there is
an agreement: the police were conspicuous in their ab-
sence.
Such clumsy action (or rather a lack of any action) is
a blot on the name of our sergeants.
The longer this poor service continues, the more the
community will continue to take the law into their own
hands in itself a frightening and unacceptable idea!
Look out for morel mushroom
Im a Rondebosch-based mushroom
forager and fungi researcher in need of
some knowledge and/or advice from
Fish Hoek residents who may have
spotted an extremely rare mushroom
growing in the valley.
The morel mushroom is highly
sought-after for its excellent taste and is
extremely rare to find in Cape Town.
Research has led me to believe that
Fish Hoek was once a hotspot for
foraging wild morels, but this is going
back over 50 years.
The morel is brown-yellow, shaped like
a small conical brain and usually pops
up in spring when the ground warms
up, at least in the northern hemisphere
it does.
They have been known to pop up after
fires and are believed to be mycorrhizal,
meaning that they grow under certain
trees in this case oak, ash, elm and
apple orchards.
I am curious as to whether they are
still around.
Finding one, or a patch of them, would
be quite a discovery.
Any information about these mush-
rooms and their last seen location would
be highly appreciated.
I wish to find them and collect sam-
ples, as to preserve their spores for
future propagation around the city.
Eating them is undoubtedly a bonus!
Please email me at [email protected] if
you know anything of this rare fungus
that grew in Fish Hoek.
JUSTIN WILLIAMS,
Setting the
record straight
To set the record straight with regards to
the article titled, CPF Chair Ousted,
published on 16 June in which the
Peoples Post had reported the Lansdowne
Community Police Forum (CPF) as being
a failed structure. This is in fact not
the case and far from the truth.
Not only is there no justification for
this incorrect reporting there is also no
factual basis for these claims. At no
point, regardless of the internal challen-
ges in the CPF has the CPF and sitting
executive committee members failed in
their mandate to serve their community.
All individuals who avail themselves to
serve their community do so voluntarily
and with the best interest of the commu-
nity at heart. Their sacrifices should not
at any point be underestimated and
undermined. I hope that in future this
publication will use extreme caution in
reporting on community organisations
and do so on a factual basis.
ASHRAF KENNY,
Lansdowne
The term failed structure was used in
reference to a previous article in which
Peoples Post reported on a special re-elec-
tion of the CPFs management structure
following the resignation of multiple
members. Peoples Post never implied that
the committee had failed in their mandate
to serve the community. Ed
Gender violence
a serious issue
The horrendous and brutal attacks
against the courageous 14-year-old
Grabouw girl, and the 18-year-old matric
pupil, Sanet de Lange begs the question,
When will civil society start winning
the battle of violence against women?
The ongoing scourge of the abuse of
women and children continues unabat-
ed!
Have we forgotten the brutal murder
of 2-year old baby Zoey Petersen at the
hands of her drug-crazed father?
The most vulnerable in our society
continues to be violated almost on a
daily basis, despite campaigns such as
the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence
against Women and Children, which
runs globally from 25 November (Inter-
national Day for the Elimination of
Violence against Women) through to
International Human Rights Day on 10
December. I urge civil society to collec-
tively tackle the issue of gender violence
seriously, and for government to secure
the highest political commitment to end
the pandemic expeditiously.

Muggings, robberies must be reported
Its been safe and quiet for the last few
months at sunrise beach where local
Muizenberg residents enjoy walking
their dogs or just taking a family stroll.
But in the last week three violent
attacks have occurred.
Two Sundays ago a man was robbed
at knife point and last Tuesday two
separate incidents of ladies being robbed
at gun point, at 10:00 by a couple of
youths.
This is terrible. The sad thing is most
of these are never reported to the police,
as people feel Whats the point? Then
they complain that the police do noth-
ing. These attacks need to be reported in
order for the law to do something about
it!

T
he Western Province Cricket
Club Badgers (WPCC) hockey
team has repeated last years
heroics and successfully defended
their Greenfields Elite Club Chal-
lenge title in Durban at the week-
end.
The tournament boasts the larg-
est total prize money for a South
African hockey tournament.
WPCC pocketed R25 000 for its ef-
forts in securing the tournaments
top honours, which is the highest
prize money ever awarded in
South African hockey history.
The Greenfields Elite Club Chal-
lenge is the only non-tertiary na-
tional hockey tournament on the
SA circuit to feature the countrys
top club hockey teams.
The tournament was established
in 2013 by Riverside Sports and
Riverside Hockey Club to show-
case proficient top class hockey by
premier players in a festival type
tournament.
This year, spectators were treat-
ed to an evenmore exciting display
of intense hockey performances
from SAs top players and clubs.
Participating teams included the
Badgers, Kearsney Hockey Club
(2nd), RiversideHockeyClub (3rd),
Wanderers Hockey Club (4th) and
Old Edwardians Hockey Club
(5th), who were also newcomers to
the tournament, and Malik Old Al-
banians Hockey Club (6th).
Deserved champions
The Badgers would seal the deal
in the final match of the festival,
beating Kearsney 3-0, with goals
fromcaptainAndrewCronje,Matt-
hew McConkey and Ryan Crowe.
According to JonCook, theBadg-
ers were fully deserved champi-
ons: Throughout this outstanding
event, the Badgers were compact
in defence, inventive in midfield
and composed in front of goal.
The Cape Town side were also
indebted to their inspirational
goalkeeper Mark Turner, who
made a number of breathtaking
saves at vital moments in his
teams four matches.
The impressive Kearsney outfit
made the Badgers work hard for
the victory, yet the goal scoring op-
portunities they created didnt
translate into dividends.
