FROM THE PAROCHIAL VICAR, FR. PEDRO MERCADO
Thanksgiving: “Eucharist” Thanksgiving Day is around the corner and it is a festive time. I believe we are all well aware of the Thanksgiving story or background, so it does not seem like anything new. We know what this national holiday means to us as Americans of the United States and its symbolism. But I want to pose a questions to all of us: Are we aware of the religious aspect which we, as Roman Catholics, place on it? It is more than a day to give thanks to God. Thanksgiving Day is a day to give thanks and to share this holiday with friends and family,
but it is also a reminder to “share [our] gifts in loving service” (Roman Missal, 1004). I am not sure if you knew that “[t]he word "Eucharist" means "Thanksgiving" (“Questions about the Eucharist,” https://www.ewtn.com/faith/teachings/eucha1a.htm, 1). As Christian Catholics we can give “thanks to God” through our participation in the Mass and the reception of the Most Holy Eucharist and by sharing this meal by inviting others to come to Mass and to live out the Christian faith. In the Mass, we give thanks to God by participating with the whole Catholic community and by praising, singing and worshipping God. We are reminded of so much in the Mass; that we are God’s children, God sent His only Son to die for us so that we can be saved, we are able to receive the Body of Christ, and so forth. But we also share the blessings which God has given to us throughout the year by making our offering during the Offertory. However, we are called to give thanks to God all the time, not only in the Mass or on Thanksgiving Day. Even in our hard times we are called to “give thanks” to God. Every exper ience can be a learning experience. It all depends on our perspective. What matters is do we invite God into our lives and experience life through His lens? When we have joys, do we share them with God? When we have tribulations, do we permit God to work with us and take up our cross? In Job 1:21 we read “Naked I came forth from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I go back there. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD!” My brothers and sisters, I invite all of us to give thanks to God this Thanksgiving Day but also give Him thanks through our actions by showing the Christian spirit at all opportune times, or at all times if possible. This means to help the sick, to feed the hungry, to aid the immigrant, to pray for our enemies, to accept one another, and so much more. Let us partake of the Body of Christ whenever we have a chance and let us continue to pray for one another and give thanks to God at all times.

FOLLOWING HIS FOOTSTEPS, FROM THE ANNUNCIATION TO ASCENSION A group of St. Patrick Church Parishioners, were greatly blessed with taking a wonderful journey following in the footsteps of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Holy Land, Italy and Israel. In Italy, we travelled to Assisi, the place where Jesus Christ was born and buried. We were able to celebrate mass. In Rome, we were in the audience of his Holiness, Pope Francis. Being only three steps away from him, we were able to receive his blessing. It was a wonderful experience. We also celebrated a private mass at the Tomb of St. John Paul II, in St. Peter’s Basilica and another Mass in St. María Maggiore. We saw the magnificence of this beautiful city, touring the Roman Coliseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Vatican museums, appreciating the masterpiece of Michelangelo, and the Sistine Chapel. We spent beautiful days in Rome. Already in Israel, we walked through the places where Jesus did miracles and proclaimed the Gospel, the synagogue at Capernaum, where Jesus healed a paralytic that was lowered through the ceiling (Matthew 9, 1-8); Belem, we also visited the place where our Savior was born, the Grotto of the Nativity; Cana of Galilee, where Jesus made his first miracle of turning water into wine (John 2, 1-11) and couples had the blessing of renewing their wedding vows; and Nazareth, where
the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary took place (Luke 1: 26-38). It is impossible to not get excited that we were in the exact place where Jesus was 2,000 years ago. We then left on a boat ride in the Sea of Galilee; were we saw the Mount of olives and the rock
where Jesus Christ was praying the night before his passion (Luke 22: 39-46): -"father, if you want, I don't drink this bitter; " [b] " but
not my will, but yours be fulfilled '. We also visited the Dead Sea, Mount Tabor (Basilica of the Transfigura-
tion), in Jerusalem, we visited the Holy Sepulcher, walked the Via Dolorosa, and the Cenacolo, place where Jesus instituted the Eucharistic body and blood as sacrifice, among many other holy places.
There is so much to say. There aren’t enough words to describe what we saw. It was a trip full of emotions by stepping, seeing and touching the places where Jesus Christ was. This experience most definitely helped us grow spiritually, and will remain in our memories throughout our living days. We will share the memories and experiences with our family and friends.
This trip helped us increase our faith, to assess even more what Jesus experienced walking through the very rocky and
sandy deserts of Judea, to spread his word throughout the land. Mass will no longer be the same, we feel the excitement of having been there, following the footsteps of Jesus.
