1. Centralized Lubrication Pumps
Select the centralized lubrication pump according to itsintended use and lubricant need.
Hand-operated pumps: Hand-operated pumps are easy to handle and favorablein price. They may be applied, for example, for one lubri-cation per day for a small amount of lubrication points.
Electrically operated pumps: The reservoir size results from the system’s lubricant re-quirement and the planned maintenance intervals:QLS 401: ………………………………... 1LPump 203: ..……………………………... 2L, 4L, 8L, 15LPump 205: ….….….….….….….….….… 4L, 5L, 8LPump 215: ………………………….….... 4L, 8L, 10L, 30L
Also observe the power supply of the driving motor:- 12 or 24 DC
- 110 or 230 AC

3. Control Units
Without control unit:
Centralized lubrication pumps without integrated controllerrequire an external controller or a PLC (programmablelogic controller). Lubricating and pause times should differonly slightly from the adjustable t ime ranges of integratedcontrollers. This comes true especially for the shortestand the longest ON times of the motor.
With integrated control unit:
The type of controller of a centralized lubrication pumpcan be determined via the field of application of the lubri-cation system:
- Power supply- Possible applications for monitoring of the metering de-
vice and control of pause and lubricating times:V10-13: to set pause time and lubricating timeM08-23: for monitored lubrication systemsH: for trailers and semi-trailersMF00: for monitored lubrication systemsMDF00: MF00 with data logger:
for monitored lubrication systems and fordata readout, e.g. number of faults, low-
level indications, etc.PSG E2: as an external controller outside the pump
4. Metering Device Monitoring
Precondition:The monitored lube point receives lubricant once per ad- justed time interval (24 h, 8 h, 24 min, …) . If this is notthe case, the lubrication system is stopped by the electri-cal/ electronical metering device monitoring (SSV KN,SSV N) or must be switched off manually in case of a vis-ual monitoring of the metering device (SSV K).
Visual monitoring: A preassembled SSV K metering device can be used asmain or secondary metering devices. The indicator pin isto control the proper function of the system and must bemounted visibly for the operation.
Electrical / eletronical monitoring:Preassembled SSV N or SSV KN metering devices canbe used as main or secondary metering devices. Theymust be placed in the lubrication system in such way thatthrough their function the complete lubrication system canbe monitored.SSV N: SSV with two-wire piston detector for con- nection to external controller or PLCSSV KN: SSV K with proximity switch for connection
to external controller or PLCSSV NE: SSV with two-wire piston detector for con- nection to integrated controllers
M08-M23, MF00 and MDF00SSV NP: SSV with three-wire piston detector for con- nection to external controller or PLC

5. SSV Metering Device, continuation5c) Single and multiple lubricant quantities
Depending on their lubricant requirements, the connec-tions of the secondary metering devices can be assignedto two different versions:
- Pos. A: In general, small bearings with or without seal-ing receive the single amount of lubricant from the lubepoint connection of a metering device.
- Pos. B & C: Highly loaded, sealed or larger bearings
(length > 70 mm) can receive the required amount oflubricant by means of several smaller amounts of lubri-cant also from only one lube point connection.By closing of outlets (never close outlet 1 or 2) the
combined amount of lubricant is available at the next
lube point connection located below the closed one:Lubricant amount of connected lube point connection
+ total lubricant amount from the upper closed lubepoint connections
= available amount of lubricant
5d) Allocating a metering devices wi th the appropriate number of outlets to each group
1004a96
Fig. 10 Allocating a metering devices with the appropriate number of outlets to each group
When assigning a metering device to a group of lube points, the following must be considered:
With single lubricant quantities (see pos. A, fig. 9):Number of lube point connections of metering device
= Number of lube points A metering device outlet is assigned to each lube point.
6001a02
NOTE
For smaller amounts of lubricants startingfrom 0.07 cm³ also metering devices typeSSV M 6 to SSV M 12 can be used.
For lubrication systems with larger linediameters (Ø > 6mm) SSV metering devices
in flanged version are available.
In the case of an odd number of lube points, select thenext bigger metering device.
With multiple lubricant quantities(see pos. B & C, fig. 9):
Number of lube point connections of metering device – number of closed lube point connections= number of lube points It is also possible to assign several metering device out-lets and their outputs to some lube points. Then, however, due to the number of closed metering device outlets, thesize of the metering device must be adapted:Exp. fig. 9: ...................................... from SSV 6 to SSV 12

Fig. 12 Select the main metering device
For providing each secondary metering device with lubri-
cant, one or more outlets of the main metering device arerequired. The assignment is facilitated by the following cri-teria:
- Identical lube points should receive identical amounts oflubricant
- For the beginning, the planning should be limited to onemain metering device with max. 12 outlets (SSV 12)
- If necessary, individual metering devices with biggeramounts of lubricant should be provided with lubricantvia separate pump element directly from the centralized
lubrication pump (see metering devices of lube points)7a & 7b or 1a , 1b, 3a & 3b in fig. 12)
- Should there arise significant deviations during the firstdivision, the assignment should be started newly.

NOTE
A bigger metering device SSV 14 to 22should only be chosen if no satisfying as-signment could be reached by this proce-
dure.

5g) Theoretical lubri cant quantity per lube point
1001a96
Fig. 13 Theoretical lubricant quantity per lube point
The lubricant quantities can now be divided in the plancompletely
Each lube point should receive lubricant at least once aday (if not, at the latest on the next day):
1013a94
CAUTION!
Poor lubrication:
Insufficient lubricant must be avoided by allmeans as it results in bearing damage.
- Excessive lubrication: For reasons of economy andclean operating environment, too much lubricant at thelube points should be avoided.
The following steps facilitate keeping these rules:
- Adjust the lubricating time to achieve a minimum lubri-cation of each lube point once a day.
- Adjust the pause time to adapt the frequency of the lu-bricant supply to the operating conditions.
- A calculation of the lubricant quantities according toyour lubrication plan (see pages 10 to 20) helps reduceor avoid poor or excessive lubrication.
- Lubricant quantities that are not needed by the mainmetering device can be returned to the centralized lu-brication pump via connected return lines (see pos. R,fig. 13).

Calculation examples forsystems with 2 to max. 22 lube points
Lubricant requirement / lubricant amount (combine lube points to one metering device)
1. No ind ication of lubricant requirement available
Determine number of lube points, min. 2 to max. 22 (seefig. 7, page 6).
Select and connect corresponding metering device (seefig. 8 to 11, pages 6 to 8).
Example fig. 14 with SSV 12:
6636b06
Fig. 14 Example: Lubrication system with SSV 12 for 12 lubricationpoints
2. Odd number of lube points
In the case of an odd number of lube points select thenext bigger metering device.
Unneeded lubricant quantities (idle metering device outlet)are to be returned to the centralized lubrication pump bythe metering device.
Alternatively, also a larger bearing can be provided withlubricant by combining lubricant quantities (see fig 9,page 7).
3. Lube points wi th different lubricant quantities
Determine those lube points that require multiple lubricant
quantities. Lube points with different lubricant quantities can be pro-
vided with lubricant by one metering device by combininglubricant quantities.
To do so, select a metering device with additional lubepoint connections (see fig. 9 and 10, page 7).
4. Amount of l ubricant per operating cycle (meteringdevice)
Calculate the lubricant quantity per operating cycle foryour metering device:
Example fig. 14: 12 x 0.2 cm³ = 2.4 cm³
5. Cycle duration (pump element & control unit V10-V13)
Calculate cycle duration:
- Calculate the cycle duration for the required lubricant bymeans of the indicated lubricant flow of the pump ele-ment (2.4 cm³).Example fig. 14 with pump element K5:(given: output K5 = 2.0 cm³/min)Cycle duration = lubricant requirement / (output/min)
= 2.4 cm³ / (2.0 cm³/60 sec.)= 72 sec.
Determine cycle duration according to previously calcu-lated tables (for controllers V10-V13):
- Search known output (2.4 cm³) in tab. 1 or 4 (page 10)(or approximation to this value).
- Determine pump element (left column of table): K5
- Determine lubricating time (first line of table): 72 sec Search lubricating in tab. 3 (page 10) (or approximation to
this value): rotating switch position 9
If the calculated cycle duration is not found in the table, adjust the next higher value (excessive lubrication). Ifnecessary, compensate superfluous amounts of lubri-cant with longer pause times (see tab. 2, page 10).
If, however, the calculated cycle duration is only slightlyabove the smaller adjusting value, adjust the next lowervalue (slightly poor lubrication). If necessary, compensatelacking amounts of lubricant with shorter pause times (see tab. 2, page 10).

Maximum possible approximation with pump element K7:- amount of operating cycles K7: 2- rotary switch position: 8- lubricating time: 64 seconds- output quantity: 8.6 cm³- Slightly excessive lubrication: 0.2 cm³
If the calculated cycle duration is not found in the table, adjust the next higher value (excessive lubrication). Ifnecessary, compensate superfluous amounts of lubri-cant with longer pause times (see tab. 2, page 10).
If, however, the calculated cycle duration is only slightlyabove the smaller adjusting value, adjust the next lower
value (slightly poor lubrication). If necessary, compensatelacking amounts of lubricant with shorter pause times (see tab. 2, page 10).
6. Particularities of large lubrication systems
Up to 15 pump elements can be integrated in one pump(P215).
If you want to direct all secondary metering devices to onepump element, you need an upstream main metering de-vice.Each main metering device must then be connected to apump element of the centralized lubrication pump.
The size of the pump element depends on the lubricantrequirement of the connected lube points.
Unneeded lubricant quantities of idle main metering de-vice outlets (without secondary metering device connec-tion) must be returned to the centralized lubrication pump.
The size of each main metering device depends on thenumber of connected secondary metering devices. TheSSV 6 metering device is the smallest.
The total output of the main metering device results fromthe individual outputs of all secondary metering devices:Example SSV 6 + SSV 10 + SSV 12 + SSV 8 + SSV 6:1.2 cm³ + 2.0 cm³ + 2.4 cm³ + 1.6 cm³ + 1.2 cm³ = 8.4 cm³
Under the following conditions, the output of the pumpcorresponds to the required amount of lubricant per oper-ating cycle:
- All main metering devices are connected to the central-ized lubrication pump with one pump element
- All main metering device outlets are occupied by sec-
ondary metering devices If, however, lubricant quantities are returned from the
main metering device to the centralized lubrication pump, the output of the pump is composed as follows:
unneeded amounts of lubricant + lubricant requirement of all lube points = Total output of the pump
7. First s teps towards a lubrication system
Arrange identical lube point numbers to identical secon-dary metering device sizes.
Direct single outputs from main metering device to eachsecondary metering device.
Return unneeded amounts of lubricant from the mainmetering device to the centralized lubrication pump.
See example fig. 16 (page 14).

Proceeding from the possible outputs, determine the cor-
responding pump element (left table column) and the re-quired run time of the centralized lubrication pump (firstline of table).
3. Calculation of r un timeTotal output HV / output of pump element
Run time with pump element K5 (2.0 cm³/min):7.2 cm³ / (2.0 cm³/min) =
3.6 min = 216 sec = 2 x 108 sec = 4 x 54 sec
Run time with pump element K6 (2.8 cm³/min):7.2 cm³ / (2.8 cm³/min) =
2.57 min = 154.2 sec = 2 x 77.1 sec
Run time with pump element K7 (4.0 cm³/min):7.2 cm³ / (4.0 cm³/min) =
1.8 min = 108 sec = 2 x 54 sec
Selection of pump element K7 acc. to tab. 1 (page 10)
Compare the calculated run times with the possible ad- justments of the control p.c.b. V10-13 (see tab. 3,page 10):switch position E = (56 sec / cycle) = (112 sec / 2 cycles)
This results in excessive lubrication. Reduce possibleexcessive lubrication by applying longer pause times. (seetab. 2, page 10).
Check whether one or more secondary metering devicesrequire larger amounts of lubricant.

Calculation examples forsystems with 24 lubri cation points and increase lubricant requirement
6 lube points are to receive the triple amount of lubricant (3 x 0.2 cm³ = 0.6 cm³);
This means, the corresponding secondary metering device also needs the triple output (3 x 1.2 cm³ = 3.6 cm³);
2 yet not needed outlet connections are used to cover the increased lubricant requirement.

1. Calculation of total output
determined:
- lubricant requirement per secondary metering device(UV) 3 x 1.2 cm³
- lubricant requirement of one secondary metering device3.6 cm³
- lubricant requirement of the lubrication system3 x 1.2 cm³ + 3.6 cm³ = 7.2 cm³

Secondary metering device type 2
3.6 cm³ / 0.6 cm³ = 6Secondary metering device type 1
1.2 cm³ / 0.2 cm³ = 6Both types of secondary metering devices need the iden-tical number of main metering device cycles. As a conse-quence, no further adaptations are necessary.
- Total output of the main metering device (HV)(output HV / cycle) x number of cycles
1.2 cm³ x 6 = 7.2 cm³
- Return quantityTotal output HV – lubricant requirement of lubrication system
7.2 cm³ - 7.2 cm³ = 0 cm³ For previously calculated outputs with what main metering
devices full secondary metering device cycles can beachieved, see tab. 6 (page 19).
2. Calculation of r un time
The run time can be determined and calculated identically
to the basic lubrication system (page 14), as there are nodeviations to the total output of the main metering device.
All returned lubricant quantities could be used for the in-creased lubricant requirement of a secondary meteringdevice.

- Total output HV 6 x 1.2 cm³ = 7.2 cm³
- Lubricant quantity UV 5 x 1.2 cm³ = 6.0 cm³
- Each secondary metering device receives 1.2 cm³

CAUTION!
Poor lubrication:
During 6 main metering device cycles, eachsecondary metering device receives lubri-cant for 6 lube points, i.e. in the metering
devices SSV 8, SSV 10 and SSV 12 two, four respectively six lube points remainwithout lubricant.
Due to the uneven arrangement of different secondarymetering device sizes, SSV 8, SSV 10 and SSV 12 can-not finish complete cycles.
For lubrication of all lube points the following quantitiesare lacking:SSV 8 ………………………………………………… 0.4 cm³SSV 10 .……………………………………………… 0.8 cm³SSV 12 .……………………………………………… 1.2 cm³Total ………………………. 8.4 cm³ – 6.0 cm³ = 2.4 cm³
Provided this corresponds to the required lubricating in-tervals, the lubrication system can be operated as shown.
If, however, all lube points require about the same lubri-cant quantities, the main metering device must beenlarged (see calculation example, page 17).
6001a02
NOTE
Very often it is better to use an adjustable
main metering device SSV D in order toadapt the lubricant outputs exactly to thelubricant requirement (see page 21 to 29).

Quicklub Progressive Systems with SSV Metering Devices, continuation
Calculation example for systems with small output quantities
6001a02
NOTEIf very small lubricant quantities are required, you should use a big main metering device. The bigger themain metering device, the smaller the available outputs. If you want to further minimize the lubricant quantity, use the pump element with the smallest output. If there is a controller integrated in the lubrication system, the max. pause time can be set in order to reduce the output another time.
A main metering device (SSV 22) is provided with lubricant by the centralized lubrication pump via a pump element (K6).
A secondary metering device (SSV 8) is connected to an outlet connection of the main metering device.
The theoretical lubricant requirement of each lube point is 0.016 cm³.
All further outlet connections of the main metering device are combined in order to return the output to the centralized lubri-cation pump again (R).

- In tables 7 to 16 all outputs of all main and secondarymetering device combinations are listed (see page 19and 20).
- Look for the required output of a lube point.- Then go upwards to determine the secondary metering
device’s size and go to the left to determine the requiredmain metering device and the corresponding pumpelement.

- For an SSV 8 secondary metering device, the main me-tering device must complete 8 cycles.
- Output for each main metering device cycle ..... 4.4 cm³for 8 main metering device cycles…. 35.2 cm³
Determine pump element and lubricating time:
- In tables 4 y 5 all outputs of the adjustable lubricatingtimes are listed (see page 10).
- In the line of the already determined pump element(K6)
search the required output of the main metering devicerespectively an approximate value.
- Then go upwards to determine the required lubricatingtime.

NOTE
Shorten the pause and lubricating times.
Shorter operating cycles help to compen-sate minor poor or excessive lubrication ofthe lube points. Small deviations in thelubricant supply can be disregarded.

Fig. 21 Schematic view of the pump
To achieve the appropriate planning and layout of a system, you should observe the following rules:
1. Selecting the pump
Select the pump in accordance with its application and
lubricant requirement:Pump 203 ...……………………………..… 2L, 4L, 8L, 15LPump 205 ………………………………………. 4L, 5L, 8LPump 215 ………………………………... 4L, 8L, 10L, 30L
Adhere to the supply voltage of the drive motor.
Select the printed circuit board or timer in accordance withthe application. Note the application possibilities for themetering device monitoring.
Protect the pump by means of an adequate pressure reliefvalve; see Parts Catalogs.
2. Determining the number of lubrication point s to be connected
1007b05
Fig. 22 Determining the number of lubrication points and their lubricant quantities
Exception: High-speed rotating parts. Also consider the lubrication points on auxiliary units or other superstructures.
3. Combining the lubrication points into groups
1006a96
Fig. 23 Combining the lubrication points into groups
A group should contain not more than 12 lubrication points, if possible less.
If possible, also combine the lubrication points according to their lubricant requirement. If possible, allocate the lubrication points to standard SSV metering devices, or if necessary to SSV D metering devices.

4. Determining lubricant quantities of the individual lubrication points
6509b05
Fig. 24 Adapting the lubricant quantities
Normally, lubricant quantities are determined and pre-scribed by the manufacturer of the machine according tothe bearing load, the machine life and run time (operatingconditions).
The frequency of lubricant supply also depends on thegrade of contamination and from the friction resistance ofthe bearing.
As soon as lubricant quantity and lubrication frequencyper lube point have been determined, the quantities are tobe distributed to several metering devices with corre-sponding metering possibilities. These may be lubricantmetering devices SSV or adjustable metering devicesSSV D.
5. Additional increase of lubricant quantities wit h SSV D metering devices
6508b05
Fig. 25 Increase of lubricant quantities
Outlet quantities:Outlet 7+ 8 = 0.4 cm³ Outlet 2 = 0.4 cm³Outlet 6 = 0.08 cm³ Outlet 1 = 0.52 cm³
If the lubricant requirement cannot be satisfied by a sim-ple dosage per outlet, the lubricant quantity can be in-creased and adapted additionally by closing of outlets.Thereby the lubricant leaves the metering device throughthe next lower outlet on the same side.Optionally, outlets 1 and 2 can be bored with each other inorder to dispose of the lubricant quantities of both outletsat one outlet. To do so, close outlet 1 or 2. In the case ofmetering devices without bypass bore never close out-let 1 or 2!
For small bearing with or without sealing, we generallyrecommend small lubricant quantities.Larger unsealed bearings (length > 70 mm) or bearingswith a very high load should receive the double or multiplelubricant quantity.

6. Allocating a metering device with the appropriate number of outlets to each group
1004b05
Fig. 26 Allocating the metering devices
It is recommended that metering devices with 6, 8, 10, 12to 22 outlets be used.
In the case of a monitored system check where the meter-ing device with preassembled piston detector or proximityswitch shall be used (as a main metering device or as asecondary metering device). It is a precondition that eachlube point receives lubricant at least once per day andoperating cycle.
6001a02
NOTE
Generally, the piston detector is to be usedon the secondary metering device that hasthe most outlets.Should the construction sizes of the sec-ondary metering devices differ much fromeach other, the piston detector is to beused with a metering device with a mediumnumber of outlets.
7. Allocation of the required metering quantities of t he SSV D
6514b05
Fig. 27 Allocate metering device outlets to the lube points Allocate equal lubricant quantities to the corresponding
metering screw(s) of the outlet of individual lube points.
The number of all dosages in a group result in the con-struction size of a secondary metering device.
In the case of an odd number of lube points, use a meter-ing device with internal (see bypass metering device UV4,fig. 28, page 25) or external combining of lubricant quanti-ties.
6001a02
NOTE
The smaller the division of metering quanti-ties, the bigger the number of outlets andthe easier the adaptation to the available
lubricant quantities of the main meteringdevice (see point 8 & 10).
The SSV D is able to supply lubricant quantities from0.08 to 1.8 cm³ per outlet and stroke without needing tocombine lubricant quantities from various outlets.
Example of an SSV: If the total lubricant requirement for 8lube points is at 1.6 cm³, a lubricant metering deviceSSV 8 (8 outlets á 0.2 cm³) can be used.
Example of an SSV D (see secondary metering deviceUV5, fig. 29, page 25):If the total lubricant requirement for 8 lube points is be-tween 0.64 cm³ and 14.4 cm³, an adjustable metering de-vice starting from SSV D 8 (8 outlets á 0.08 to 1.8 cm³)can be used.

directly from the pump element
First, allocate one outlet of the main metering device toeach secondary metering device (UV).
If possible, supply the same lubricant quantities to similarlubrication points.
Check whether one or several lube points require largerlubricant quantities. As shown in Fig. 36, two lube pointsare provided with lubricant via one metering device V2.Due to the increase lubricant requirement, metering de-vice V2 is connected directly to a pump element (output2 cm³).
If necessary, modify the allocation of the lubricationpoints.
Maximum size of the main metering device (HV):SSV D 22.
Compared to the output of the main metering device, thelubricant requirement of the secondary metering devicesmay be multiple. This requires the divisibility of the total
lubricant requirement UV by the lubricant requirement of
the main metering device during one operating cycle SHV.The result is the required number of complete cycles ofthe main metering device nHV needed to cover the lubri-cant requirement of all its secondary metering devices.

Fig. 29 Connecting the metering device to the lubrication points
6001a02
IMPORTANT
With standard metering devices SSV D 6 to SSV D 22 always connect outlets 1 and 2 to a lubrication point(example UV5, fig. 29).In the case of the bypass metering devices SSV D 6/5 to SSV D 22/21 with cross-ported outlets 1 and 2always connect outlet 1 or 2 to a lube point (example UV4, fig. 29).
10. Distribution o f Lubri cant Quantities
1002b05
Fig. 30 Divided lubricant quantity
The lubricant quantities are to be divided according to theabove example.
Each lubrication point should be supplied with lubricant atleast once every day, at the latest on the next day (seestep 12, page 26):
- Avoid too much lubricant per day and per lubricationpoint (excessive lubrication).
- Avoid too little lubricant per day and per lubrication point(poor lubrication).
If it is not possible to fully share the lubricant quantitiesamong the main metering device and its secondary meter-
ing devices, proceed according to the listed order:- Allocation of single lube points to a neighbor lubrication
group (step 6, page 23)
- Division of the lubricant quantities at the secondary me-tering device into smaller metering quantities in order tosimplify the adaptation between main and secondarymetering device (step 7, page 23)
- Return of lubricant quantities that are not needed to thepump into the reservoir (not shown).
- If necessary, small increases or reductions of the lubri-cant quantities on the lube points.
- Adaptation of lube and pause times via the pump con-trol unit in order to achieve even lubricant quantities pertime unit.Set the pause time in such way that the frequency ofthe lubricant supply corresponds to the operating condi-tions of the machine or the vehicle (step 12, page 26)

12. Adjust ing the run t ime (operating time) of the pump (not for pumps 203 with microprocessor control)
For the run time of a system select the time for the biggestsecondary metering device, in dependence of the mainmetering device used.
If it is not possible to adjust a time parameter within theprogrammable scale, select the next higher value.
During the lubricating time (pump run time) the used lubri-
cant is renewed or topped up in the bearings. The frequency of renewal/topping up and the quantity that
must be supplied to a single lubrication point depends onseveral factors, e.g.:
- bearing size
- kind of bearing - open or closed bearing, roller bearingor friction bearing
- frictional force
- bearing loads
- adjustable run times of the pump, etc.
The required quantity may be very different as a result ofthe mentioned factors.
6001a02
IMPORTANT
Within a determined operating time ofthe machine or the vehicle, the lubricantat a friction point must have been re-
newed or topped up to that extent thatno damages may occur.
If small, standard or large bearings are connected to sec-ondary metering devices model SSV D, the lube points mustbe fed with the premetered quantity corresponding to themetering screw that is mounted.

NOTE
The data relating to the pressure loss permetering device refer to metering deviceswith 6 to 22 outlets, namely the main andsecondary metering devices.
The sum of all pressures, from PA to PE plus 5 bar for theroller bearings (lubrication point) or plus 15 bar for frictionbearings must not exceed 80% of the recommendedworking pressure of the pump.
All the values mentioned in the table are average values
based on real test results. The NLGI class of the grease only indicates the statistical
density. It does not indicate the dynamic pumpability of
the grease. The flow properties of greases of the sameNLGI class may be very different.
