In order to do that, we need to be comfortablewith the knowledge that our philosophy can standfirm without lies! Many gun owners have beeninfected by the lie that a gun in the home presentsa danger to that family – they suspect, but theycannot articulate, that a gun in the home createsa safer environment for their families and neigh-bors. These peopleare ashamed to dis-cuss the gun in theircloset, and thatneeds to change.

We all know knowledgeable gun owners whoask why anyone needs high-capacity magazines,or “assault-weapons.” We’ve even heard themdenigrate open-carry advocates. Are these gunowners willing to slide down the slippery slope ofcompromise simply in order to appear “reason-able?” Or are they, too, ashamed of our norm?

In 1989, Bill Ruger wrote to all members ofCongress stating that we should “prohibit the pos-session of high capacity magazines.” This wasrecently repeated by Bob Brown, a former Mon-tana secretary of state and state Senate president,in an article from the Great Falls (Montana) Tri-

bune, “Proud NRA member thinks there should belimits on guns.” It’s easy to understand why thisonly provides fodder to the media – how manyrounds are just right? The global prohibitionistshave stated that they would find it acceptable forus to possess a single-shot sporting weapon on theroad to their gun-free society.

We have also recently heard other knowledge-able gun-owners parrot the media to express hys-teria about the open-carry movement – our origi-

nal norm. The mediaare referring to opencarry as foolish anddangerous, “a loop-hole that needs to

be closed,” almost as if they know that constantvisions of peaceable Americans carrying firearmsis destructive to the prohibitionist agenda.

Are we embarrassed by proclaiming oursovereignty?

A tough job lies ahead of us. We need to con-quer our weaknesses, even as we educate thepublic. The Founding Fathers understood one factmany have forgotten: a representative republic canonly survive with an educated populace.

It is in the public’s best interest to be educated,not driven by raw emotion. We are the only onesable to do so.
